COMMUNITY living communicating Christ through relationships PART OF THE LEE ABBEY FAMILY
communicating christ together The Lee Abbey London community is a group of about 40 Christians from around the world learning together what it means to be the Body of Christ. We live, work and worship together while providing hospitality and a home from home for up to 160 international students. We witness to the students and our local community by the way we live and work, through outreach and by answering questions about our faith. Community members come from a wide range of Christian traditions and with the international nature of the residence the Lee Abbey experience is diverse and rich. Most members volunteer for a year, but there are opportunities for those wishing to volunteer for the summer months only. Our Vision Lee Abbey London is part of the Lee Abbey Movement whose mission statement is Ccommunicating Christ through relationships. We believe each community member is called by God to live out this statement: We communicate Christ by our worship, our community life, by becoming like Christ, by our actions and our words.
WORKING AND WORSHIPING Each community member serves on one of four teams which do much of the practical work to keep the residence running smoothly The work could include office work, cooking, housekeeping and maintenance. If you join the community for one year you will probably serve on more than one team. In addition to these responsibilities, your role will include: Engaging in outreach to the students and in the local community, Serving in our coffee bar, Participating in and contributing to the worship of the Lee Abbey community, Using your talents and gifts in our ministry for example: providing hospitality, playing an instrument, using your creative gifts, leading a discussion group, setting up for a worship concert, praying for others Exercising your gifts and learning new skills in leading worship.
LIVING IN A FAMILY ATMOSPHERE For many, joining the community is the opportunity of a lifetime. Community life can be challenging, but it is also hugely rewarding. The community is like a family there is a sense of belonging that comes from supporting and encouraging each other while also gaining a sense of purpose from engaging in God s work. It is a place where lifelong friendships are made with people from around the world. You are encouraged to develop your talents and gifts. This is achieved through engaging in the opportunities available, and also through on-the-job training. Community members receive full board and lodging (shared bedrooms) in a comfortable environment right in the heart of Kensington in central London as well as generous weekly pocket money. There are also additional benefits such as free broadband, discounted rates for family visits, and volunteers who stay for a year visit Lee Abbey Devon for a five-day retreat.
