Word From The Pastor Headline: Angels Evangelize. This week we celebrated the feast of the Holy Guardian Angels. The Catechism of the Catholic Church writes about angels: With their whole beings the angels are servants and messengers of God. Because they always behold the face of my Father who is in heaven they are the mighty ones who do his word, hearkening to the voice of his word. (Mt. 18:10; Ps 103:20) Christ is the center of the angelic world. They are his angels: When the Son of man comes in his glory and all the angels with him... (Mt 25:31). They belong to him because they were created through and for him. (Col 1:16) They belong to him still more because he has made them messengers of his saving plan. (Heb 1:14) It is the angels who evangelize by proclaiming the Good News of Jesus birth and resurrection. They will be present at Christ s return, which they will announce, to serve at his judgment. (Acts 1:10-11) In the meantime, the whole life of the Church benefits from the mysterious and powerful help of angles. (Various verses of Acts are cited.) From it s beginning until the death, human life is surrounded by their watchful care and intercession. (Mt 18:10) Beside each believer stands an angel as protector and shepherd leading him to life. (St. Basil) Already here on earth the Christian life shares by faith in the blessed company of angels and men united in God. Prayer To Your Guardian Angel Angel of God, my Guardian dear, To whom God s love commits me here, Ever this day be at my side, To light and guard, to rule and guide. Amen Scripture Insights Marriage was part of God s plan from the very beginning of creation. Today s First Reading from the Book of Genesis opens with a religious reflection on the creation of woman. The context for her creation is the simple proclamation that It is not good for the man to alone. I will make a suitable partner for him. Through the bond that joins them together they become one body. This is why a man leaves his father and mother and clings to his wife, and the two become one flesh. In the Gospel, Jesus continues journeying toward Jerusalem. Some scholars of the Jewish Law pose a question to Jesus about divorce. In the Book of Deuteronomy 24:1, Moses allowed a man to divorce his wife if he is later displeased with her and finds in her something indecent. Legal scholars of that time argued passionately over concrete circumstances would permit such a decision. Without entering into the disputes, Jesus return to God s original intent in creating man and woman by quoting the passage in the First Reading. God intends two to become one flesh. In effect Jesus says that from the creation of the world marriage is meant to establish absolute permanency and a deep unity. This bond is never to be broken. In doing so Jesus makes a commitment to the equality of man and woman. While his own Jewish tradition allowed a man to divorce his wife, by returning to God s original plan for man and woman to become one flesh, Jesus rejects divorce and raises the status of the woman who is equal to the man.
