Spiritual Morsels Even the most serious fall of the children shouldn t make parents desperate, for sin has become fashionable in our time. They should always keep in mind the following: Now days, young people will be granted certain extenuating circumstances and will be judged with leniency for their transgressions. Today a grade of seven for conduct is the equivalent to the ten excellent of our schooldays. Of course, parents will always try to help their children, but they mustn t be overly anxious. Children will get more sensible and experienced with time. Right now they may not understand what is good because their mind has not yet matured. Their mind is cloudy and it lacks clarity to discern the danger that lies ahead and the irreparable damage they can suffer. St. Paisios of Athos * Note from Fr. Paul+: This was written before 1994, when St. Paisios passed into Paradise. So if young people only got a seven out of ten back then, I imagine now in 2017 that we are doing well if one gets a three out of ten!!! because things have gotten progressively worse!!! It was said of Abba John the Dwarf that he withdrew and lived in the desert at Scetis with an old man of Thebes. His Abba, taking a piece of dry wood, planted it and said to him, 'Water it every day with a bottle of water, until it bears fruit.' Now the water was so far away that he had to leave in the evening and return the following morning. At the end of three years the wood came to life and bore fruit. Then the old man took some of the fruit and carried it to the church saying to the brethren, 'Take and eat the fruit of obedience.' Sayings of the Desert Fathers Pray to the Mother of God. She will intercede for you in this life and after death she will help you to pass through the toll-houses and reach the heavenly Kingdom. St. Barsanuphius of Optina [St. Paisios responds to the question: What is philotimo, Geronta? ] What does the dictionary tell us? The word, philotimo, does not exist in any other language Let me tell you what my dictionary says about philotimo: Philotimo is the devout, perfect example of goodness the most grateful love, which is all goodness and humility. It is the polished love of a humble person who does not put his own self whatsoever into whatever he does, and whose heart is full of spiritual refinement, sensitivity and gratefulness to God and to the images of God: his fellow human beings." People who have philotimo are indeed noble souls. They go through agonies over the slightest good done for them, and try to return the favor. However, no matter what they do, they never feel that the have done enough. And they never forget it. I praise God that my love is of the spiritual, angelic kind, which abolishes distances and enables me to have contact with you from afar in this life as well as in the other life, which is even more far away. Because even that distance will be very short, since we are united by Love: by Christ Himself. "Life without Christ, death without Christ, truth without Christ, the sun without Christ and the universe without Him- all of that is absolute madness, a terrible martyrdom, a Sisyphian torment, hell! I don t want either life or death without You, Sweetest Lord. I don t want truth, justice, paradise or even eternity. No, no! All I want is You. For You to be in all things, in all people and above everything. -St Justin Popovich
