The Living Reminder God's Purpose for Our Saviour's Lutheran Church is to joyfully share God's love with all. Volume 19 Issue 4 Dear friends, April 2019 At this time of year in the church, we are on a journey toward our encounter with the Risen Christ. When we attend a Holy Week worship service and when we celebrate the victory of Jesus, we are part of the Christian church throughout the world, bearing witness to the Resurrection. Holy Week begins Sunday April 14, when we begin worship outside the church, listening to the Palm Sunday gospel reading, marching together into the church, carrying Palm Branches in our hands and singing praise to Jesus Christ. (Children are all invited to be part of the procession.) This reminds us of the day when Jesus arrived in Jerusalem in triumph, riding on a donkey, through joyful crowds, who shouted praise to God. Soon, the celebration of Passover would begin, when some looked for a way to kill Jesus. Our readings on April 14 will include the reading of the Passion of Christ from Luke 22:14 to 23:56. Maundy Thursday, April 18, will find us gathering at church at 7:00 pm to hear lessons about the Last Supper. In this special service of Holy Communion, some of our children and youth will receive first communion. Also during this service, people of all ages will be invited to come to the front of the church for Foot Washing. We do this on Maundy Thursday because of what Jesus did at the Last Supper: he commanded his friends to love one another. The action Jesus took to demonstrate his love during the Last Supper was to wash the feet of his disciples. We are called to follow his example as we humbly serve others, especially the poor and the unloved. (Worshippers who are considering participation in the Foot Washing may want to wear sandals and comfortable clothing to the service. Chairs at the front of the sanctuary will be set up with towels, pitchers of water, and basins.) At the Lord s Table we remember Jesus sacrifice of his life, even as we are called to offer ourselves in love for the people of the world. Good Friday will be observed on April 19 with the reading of the Passion of Christ, with songs and with the procession with a rugged cross. The Sanctuary Singers will share When Jesus Died for Me by Patrick M. Liebergen. We will pray for those in need, we will worship Jesus Christ, and meditate upon the meaning of Redemption. At last, on Sunday April 21, Our Saviour s Lutheran Church will celebrate the Resurrection of Our Lord! With joy, I invite you and your loved ones to be present for our praise and celebration: we will lift our voices to say, Alleluia! Christ is Risen! Christ is Risen indeed! Alleluia!
