November 26, 2017 A FEW WORDS FROM OUR PASTOR Today the Church throughout the world celebrates the Solemnity of Christ the King. It Also happens to be the last Sunday of our present Church year. Now you might be asking yourselves, What is it that we celebrate today? The Feast of Christ the King was established in 1923 by Pope Pius XI in an attempt to counteract the influence of totalitarian forms of government like Communism, Nazism and Fascism. Bear in mind what was happening in our world during this period of time. It wasn t a pretty time in history! At any rate, what Pope Pius XI wanted to do was show people that it was Jesus the Christ who is sovereign over both human history and human life. Some people were beginning to forget that. Even today, some people misinterpret or misunderstand what we mean when we say that Christ is King! If we just think for a moment back in time when they crucified Jesus, we read Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews. Even then people thought Jesus was going to be a king who had political power. They did not understand that the Christ s kingdom was not of THIS world. What we need to remember is that if we want to be a part of God s kingdom, then we need to accept God s rule over our lives. We have been listening to the Word of God for an entire Church Year now, and at this time we are being asked once again if we are willing and able to share in Christ s glory and kingship. The only difference is that the Christ s kingship does not involve precious gems and jewels, places of honor or titles of respect but rather, a sharing in the Gospel and sufferings of Jesus. It is no mistake that the church saves this feast day of Christ the King for the very last Sunday of the church year, right before the start of Advent, because we believe as a Church that God s kingdom will not be fully visible until the end of time, when Jesus returns once again in glory. If we have allowed ourselves to enter God s kingdom spiritually, then we will also enter into the physical reality of God's kingdom through a resurrection like Jesus the Christ s. Have a great week everyone. Stewardship November 19 Offertory Saturday 5:00 p.m. $986.00 77 Sunday 9:30 a.m. $3,408..00 231 Sunday 11:30 a.m. $499.00 107 Sunday 5:00 p.m. $941.00 Father Frank
Our schedule for November is as follows: November 26 Closed for Thanksgiving On Saturday, November 18th, our dedicated Faith Formation teachers, Genevieve Gloviak Bandini, our third grade teacher, Audrey Belsito, our Kindergarten teacher, Christina Bandini, our faithful sub, Annalisa Villanueva, our second grade teacher, and myself attended the Fifth Annual Evangelization Congress held at Saint Francis rep High School. The theme this year was Witnessing to the Gospel and we joined nearly one thousand people to be further formed in ways of missionary discipleship. Each of the presenters spoke of Jesus call for us to witness to the Gospel, the Good News of Salvation. This Congress marks the start of the third year, of which we have been part of, of our diocesan evangelization and renewal plan, THE JOY OF ENCOUNTERING CHRIST THE FAMILY S HOPE. This year is set aside to reflect on what it means to witness to the Gospel in our everyday life, after having encountered the Christ who loves and guides us. May God continue to bless and protect us here at St. Saviour parish Family. Sister Pat Rutter
THANK YOU Brownbaggers Homeless Outreach The Brownbaggers project serves the poor in the NYC parks during the winter months. Since 2009 we have delivered thousands of lunches. Meeting monthly in the Parish Hall at 12:30 pm, we assemble 100 brown bag lunches with food and clothing items donated by our volunteers. We then travel via subway to multiple Manhattan parks to distribute our lunches to those most in need, returning to Brooklyn by 3:30 p.m. John Olash is the current director of our Brownbaggers Homeless Outreach program. Volunteers can reach John at: johnolash@hotmail.com Please RSVP now for Sunday, December 3, 2017 Children under the age of 18 must to be accompanied by an adult. Please wear comfortable shoes and have your metro card charged. Twenty five volunteers are needed for this event. RSVP to: johnolash@hotmail.com Please consider donating warm socks, hats or gloves into the Brownbaggers Donation Box which will be located in the vestibule of the church after every mass. Any donations received will be distributed at that month s Brownbagger event. Also, financial donations used to purchase food items can be made in the Parish rectory. Thank you for your support. FOOD PANTRY The next food distribution at St. Thomas Aquinas will take place the Saturday after Thanksgiving. We hope we can send each one of our guests home laden down with good things. Please consider helping us with donations of dried beans, brown rice, cereal, canned meats, canned or dried fruit, toilet paper and toothpaste. Please, no cranberry sauce or pumpkin! I want to take this opportunity to say THANK YOU to everyone who worked so hard last Sunday to make our Fall Flea Market a huge success. Thanks to the generosity of so many people, our parish was able to make a profit of $2,001.00. This is wonderful!! I am so grateful to everyone who stepped up and shared their time and talent with our parish in assisting with all the details that went into making it a successful fund-raiser for our parish. To everyone who donated items for the parish table (which turned out to be the most popular table at the Flea Market); who helped to set up; cleaned up; worked the parish tables; prepared food; sold food; donated items for our raffles; sold raffle tickets throughout the day; - no matter what you did to help us we thank you! Our thanks as well to everyone who came down and did a little shopping or bought a little lunch. And in a special way, I really need to thank Father Kevin and Sister Pat for suggesting this fund raiser and who, along with the assistance of Audrey Belsito, handled every aspect of this event right down to the very last detail. They did an amazing job and I am so grateful for all they do for our parish family. I also want to take this opportunity to say a great big THANK YOU to Geri Anne O Beirne for gathering all the clothing we used this year to add onto our Stole of Remembrance which hung over our cross this November in honor of All Souls and thank you as well to parishioner Grace Mroz, who graciously shared her time and talent by sewing all those pieces of fabric onto purple cloth to create our beautiful Stole of Remembrance. I think it really turned out quite beautiful and is a fitting way for us to remember our loved ones who have passed away. It is my hope that next year more people will choose to participate and we can continue to add onto our stole.
