Now that I know How can I reach a Roman Catholic with the Gospel?

Four kinds of RC: Informed, convinced and practicing Traditional and practicing Supersticious and practicing Non practicing, but conditioned

From the RCC Catechism we read: 1. Salvation is not only by grace 2. The Bible is not the only basis for faith 3. Jesus is not the only redeemer and mediator 4. The blood of Jesus is not the complete payment 5. The New Birth is received through a Sacrament 6. The Trinity is not our only object of worship

We need to communicate well: The terminology - A Roman Catholic uses Biblical terminology - We need to define ALL Biblical terms - We need to make sure that we are careful in the statements we make. IF NOT... - Effect: we give them false assurance

Terms that NEED defining 1. Born again 2. Receive Christ 3. Christian 4. Grace 5. Sin 6. Church

We need to understand basic doctrines: Baptism - 1st effect of baptism: regeneration - 2nd effect of baptism: freedom from the power of darkness - 3rd effect of baptism: grace to resist sin - Effect: A Roman Catholic feels right with God

We need to understand basic doctrines: Purgatory - You need to be baptized to go there - Almost everyone goes there - There are many ways to reduce the time there - Effect: sin is not that dangerous you have time to pay for it. One just needs to keep out of hell.

We need to understand basic doctrines: The relationship with clergy: - The priest celebrates the Mass and offers forgiveness of sins - The Church administers grace and the Sacraments - The Church does not force you to follow all the rules rigidly - Effect: superficiality in the daily spiritual walk. Many just do what they think is the minimum necessary.

We need to understand basic doctrines: God s judgement - The Sacraments are necessary for salvation - All sins need to be confessed by name to the priest - No one really knows the exact list of mortal sins Effect: dependence on the church for assurance.god has relegated to the church all authority for eternal destiny

We need to understand basic doctrines: Judgement, the results: - Certainty of salvation is unconceivable. The Sacraments would be worthless - By classifying sins all tend to compare the severity of thier sins to others. Awareness of sin is diminished - All feel capable of taking care of their eternal destiny. It is impossible to trust only Jesus for complete forgiveness

Our responsibility: Demonstrate practically our walk with God. Spiritual life and the fruit of the Spirit needs to be clear When we witness use the Word of God. The power is in the Word not in our ability to show our knowledge or our ability to debate Make sure that we define all our terms so there is no misunderstanding Pray for their salvation witness faithfully

You need to avoid: Making your witnessing opportunities just a group of confrontations on different doctrines Accepting superficial statements as proof that they are believers because of your desire to believe they are A Gospel presentation that is continually interrupted by chasing different subjects Thinking that their salvation depends on your ability Giving up because of past mistakes in witnessing

Our battle Brothers, my heart's desire and prayer to God for them is that they may be saved. 2 For I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge. 3 For, being ignorant of the righteousness of God, and seeking to establish their own, they did not submit to God's righteousness. 4 For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes. Romans 10:1-4

Our attitude And a servant of the Lord must not quarrel but be gentle to all, able to teach, patient, in humility correcting those who are in opposition, if God perhaps will grant them repentance, so that they may know the truth, and that they may come to their senses and escape the snare of the devil, having been taken captive by him to do his will. 2 Timothy 2:24-26

Our Hope Continue steadfastly in prayer, being watchful in it with thanksgiving. At the same time, pray also for us, that God may open to us a door for the word, to declare the mystery of Christ, on account of which I am in prison that I may make it clear, which is how I ought to speak. Walk in wisdom toward outsiders, making the best use of the time. Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person. Colossians 4:3-5

The elements of the Gospel 1 Authority of the Word of God Sufficient Exclusive 2 Total depravity of man Sinful Incapable of any good 3 God s judgment Necessary Final 4 The solution Exclusive Unmerited 5 The assurance

The elements of the Gospel Authority of the Word of God Sufficient 2 Timothy 3:16,17 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work. Exclusive Isaiah 55:8,9 For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.

The elements of the Gospel Total depravity of man Sinful Romans 3:9-12 What then? Are we Jews any better off? No, not at all. For we have already charged that all, both Jews and Greeks, are under sin, as it is written: None is righteous, no, not one; no one understands; no one seeks for God. All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one. Incapable of any good Ephesians 2:1-3 And you were dead in the trespasses and sins in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind.

The elements of the Gospel God s judgment Necessary Romans 3:23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, Final Hebrews 9: 27 And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment,

The elements of the Gospel The solution Exclusive Acts 4:12 And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved." Unmerited Ephesians 2: 8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast.

The elements of the Gospel The assurance John 1: 9-13 The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him. He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him. But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God. 1 John 5:13 I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God that you may know that you have eternal life.
