ACTS OF THE APOSTLES NEWS Acts of the Apostles Assembly #2411 Fourth Degree, Knights of Columbus Centreville, Virginia Vol. XIX No 9 Over 100 years of Patriotic Service March 2014 Faithful Navigator s Column Hopefully, the snow is over (I pray). Our next Assembly meeting is scheduled for March 25, 2014 in the St. Timothy school cafeteria, Appetizers and beverages at 6:30 PM. The next 4 th Degree exemplification will be held at the Holiday Inn- Tanglewood in Roanoke on April 26, 2014. During our Commander s and Council liaison reports, I would like to hear how many candidates we have for the exemplification. Deadlines for the exemplification are: Hotel reservations ($99.00 special rate) by April 11, 2014, Candidate packages to administrative assistant by April 15 th, and no refunds after April 19. I will be attending and all past Navigators are also invited to participate in the ceremony as escorts. Our Assembly has again elected to remain under the State s liability insurance program. We will be covered by the Hanover Insurance Group through the State K of C. The cost is $230./yr., or $1.00 per member. The invoice and info to where the check should be sent will be presented to the Comptroller and Purser at the March 25, 2014 meeting. Membership cards have been distributed to all paid Sir Knights. A donation of $500 has been mailed to the K of C Charities for the typhoon disaster in the Philippines, and a donation of $300, also approved in January has been mailed to Richie Head for the Archdiocese for Military Services. Both were received and acknowledged, with Thank You letters. As stated many times previously, I encourage all Sir Knights to participate in the Color Corps events that occur during the year, especially those in your home parishes. Our Commander will describe the scheduled events in his report. Captain s Log We would like to thank the Fr. Cilinski Council, and in particular Sir Knights Al Grimmig and Joe Beres for the wonderful pork tenderloin dinner we had for our Renewal of Obligations Ceremony/Dinner. Everyone must have thoroughly enjoyed it because we had no left-overs, except for a small amount of the appetizer, provided by our Faithful Captain. Seems we ve had no appetizer left over when my wife made it. Guess I ll just have to surrender my apron, and let the expert, Linda, do the honors, going forward. In keeping with our rotating Set-up/Clean-up schedule, the St. Chung Hasang Council will provide the meal for the March 25th Assembly meeting. Appetizers will be available at 6:30 PM, dinner at 7PM, followed by the business meeting at 8PM. We have been requested by St. Timothy s Property Management to be off the property NO LATER THAN 9:15 PM, to

help them maintain better control of overtime costs for staff. Their staff cannot leave until we are totally off the property. The dinner schedule for each month follows: April & Oct - St. Veronica Council May & Nov June & Jan July & Feb Mar & Sept - St. Clare Council - Fr. Nudd Council - Fr. Cilinski Council - St. Chung Hasang Council Note: The month of December is our Christmas Dinner, and the August Dinner has usually been our Installation of Officers. If there is a change of these event dates, the above schedule may be adjusted accordingly. Please review this schedule to be aware of your Council s assigned month. The regular Dinner Attendee listing is presented below. If anyone wishes to be added or removed from the list, please contact me at PJBayer@verizon.net, or (703) 851-7648. We ask that the Council responsible for providing the meal for the upcoming Dinner/Meeting take into account that there will probably be no more than 20 Sir Knights dining that night. (14 regulars and maybe 6 others) We d very much like to see all the Councils make dinner be a profitable enterprise by preparing only enough food to serve the planned attendees. Regular Attendees: P. Bayer J. Bares G. Broyles T. Canavan J. Cota R. Flaherty J. Frazer A. Grimmig P. Hannan M. Lynch T. Martin M. Palucci T. Yehl The dinner list is for members who plan on attending every meeting to ensure we have ample food for them. If you are not on the list but would like to be included, please send me an e-mail or call (see above) to let me know you would like to be added. If you are on the list and cannot attend a meeting, please let me know so we won t prepare more food than is needed. Finally, if your name is NOT on the Regular Diner List, but you are planning to attend an upcoming Dinner/Meeting, please contact me ONE WEEK in advance so I can provide a more accurate head count to the Council preparing the meal. As a closing note, please keep two of our Brother Sir Knights in your prayers for their rapid recoveries. Sir Knights George Alexa (in Fair Oaks Hospital with double pneumonia) and Alan Walls, currently back in Manor Care (Rte. 50 at the Fairfax County Parkway) for rehabilitation after his ankle/foot fusion, which has been somewhat problematic. Fraternally, Phil Bayer, Faithful Captain Commander s Cross Swords Worthy Sirs they say March roars in like a lion. We are beginning the busy part of the liturgical season for the Color Corps with Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Confirmations and ordinations. Please see the events below and please see if you can do your duty as a member of the Color Corps and participate in these events. These events benefit the Church, the Community and the Order. Upcoming Events: COLOR CORPS CERTIFICATION OPPORTUNITIES Page 2

The color corps training is open to all Sir Knights. The Commander certification is open to all commanders, assistant/associate commanders, potential commanders, and navigators. All Assemblies are invited to attend any of the training sessions. If Sir Knights from your assembly plan to attend, please send me approximate numbers by the Thursday before the scheduled training. Directions for each location are available in the State Directory/web site. None posted for March at this point Mother s Day than with Mary Our Blessed Mother and Patroness in Her Home. Liturgical Color Corps Events Confirmations Spring 2014 MOST REVEREND PAUL S. LOVERDE Bishop of Arlington: Thur., Feb. 27, 2014, 7:30 pm, Saint Mary Parish, Alexandria Sun., March 16, 2014, 2:00 pm, Saint Francis de Sales Parish, Kilmarnock Color Corps Manuals: copies of the Color Corps Drill Manual will be available at the March meeting. Color Corps Events 1. Mass of Thanksgiving for the Canonization of Pope John Paul II On Sunday, May 11th. There will be a Mass of Thanksgiving for the Canonization of Pope John Paul II at the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in Washington DC at Noon with the Principle Celebrant being Donald Cardinal Wuerl. Following the Mass there will be a procession to the John Paul II Shrine which is down the street from the Basilica. The Supreme Council has also asked for a large 4th degree Honor Guard to attend this Mass as well. Our Worthy Master, Cy Alba has sent this request to all of the Navigators. As we did for the 50th Anniversary of the knights Bell tower this past September, please if you are a Member of your Assembly s honor guard, please let your Navigator know that you will participate. Virginia Knights always rise to the occasion when called upon I hope that this event is no different - I am asking that Virginia Knights and Sir Knights to make a special effort to publically demonstrate our Love for Blessed John Paul II by attending this glorious celebration of His Canonization.
