THE CRIER HOLY CROSS LUTHERAN CHURCH AUGUST 2017 PART I AN EXPLANATION: It s summertime and the living is easy! Or The lazy, hazy days of summer! Or The time has flown by! Wells Beach at sunrise One of these is an explanation as to why we are doing two Criers during August. This short version will be PART I. Later, hopefully in the next couple of weeks, a longer version (PART II) will come out with all the articles I know you love to read. Basically, it wasn t feasible to get the whole thing done and still announce the following events in a timely manner. So the decision was made to do two Criers for this month. Please enjoy hearing about all the fun things happening at Holy Cross! And enjoy the lovely pictures of summertime interspersed throughout! Your faithful editor, Julie Clapp Nubble Light at sunrise 1

KITCHEN IS DONE!!! After five months, the kitchen is done! We have a new layout, cabinets, countertops, stove, ovens and flooring. We have a separate area for washing dishes from the food prep/serving area. And a HUGE countertop from which to serve food! Thank you for everyone who helped design and work with the contractor to get this done! WHICH LEADS TO There will be a brunch on Sunday, July 30 th to celebrate the new kitchen! Please come join in the festivities!! 2

SHARE THE BOUNTY Saturday, August 5 th, is the day for the next bean supper! There will be the usual menu of beans, cole slaw, hot dogs, various breads and, of course, PIE! After a long hiatus, it will be good to be back serving this meal. Everyone is welcome, both from within the church and the wider community. If you are a regular volunteer, please check with Julie if you can or cannot help. COME HAVE SOME PIE! FRIENDSHIP LUNCH On Monday, August 14 th, the Friendship Lunch will be back in business! We are excited to be back serving the community in our new kitchen! We are always looking for volunteers, people to set up tables and chairs, set the tables, prep work for food, serving food, clean up, etc. We usually work from 10 a.m. until around 1:30 p.m. If you have any questions or are interested in being a volunteer, please contact Mary Keating. Everyone is invited to attend and eat lunch! The menu for this meal is still undecided but as usual, it will be delicious! Mary Keating s Garden 3

BLUEBERRY FESTIVAL! The tenth annual Blueberry Festival will be Aug. 12 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Quilted items, bags, aprons and many other hand-crafted items will be for sale at the festival. There will also be homemade doughnuts, blueberry pies, cookies and other treats for sale. Proceeds from the sale will benefit the annual work camp mission trip for senior high youth. PARENTS PRAYER GROUP The Parent's Prayer group meets the first Monday of every month in Lord Street House. From 4:30 to 5:30 we will share prayer concerns and pray together. From 5:30 to 6:00, we will devote time to fellowship and book discussion. (The book we are reading is The Power of a Praying Parent and copies are available.) We pray for all children of all ages and all stages - please join us! ALTAR GUILD Looking for a few good people! The Altar Guild is in need of a few people to learn to help take care of altar responsibilities. We are looking for people to fill in the times that Violet Stephens has lovingly done for so many years. You can share doing this with another person or take a month of Sundays by yourself. We are flexible and willing to fill in as needed. Those who do this now are Joy Judd (Pete helps too), Mary Bates (Jack helps too), Sandie Hamel, Cathy Bansmer and Dot Bois, Cathy Norwood and Jenny Gallo, Dorothy Haws, and Lynne White. Please contact Joy if you would like to join our group or say something to any of the group members or Pastor Rich. Thank you! YOUNG AT HEART Young at Heart potluck BBQ at Roger and Helen Rotvig's house will be Sunday, August 20 th at 4 pm. Please bring a dish to share and a chair to sit in! We will be outside so wear your sunscreen and hat! Signup sheet will be in the Narthex. Directions will be posted with the sign-up sheet. 4

BACKPACKS AND SCHOOL SUPPLIES This year we have the opportunity to provide support for Caring Unlimited York County's domestic violence shelter by helping children in need get ready for a new school year. Donations of backpacks, pens, pencils, markers, crayons, notebooks, lined paper, rulers, and scissors would be most welcome. Donations can be placed in the bin in the Narthex marked Caring Unlimited. The school supplies will be picked up on Sunday, August 22nd for distribution the following day. Thank you! KENNEBUNK CARES CLOSET The Kennebunk Cares Closet is in need of additional volunteers. We have recently lost 7 of our faithful volunteers due to health challenges, family challenges, and moves out of the area. The Closet volunteers meet regularly on Monday mornings between the hours of 8:30 AM and 10:30 AM in the church basement to label and shelve donations, prepare orders, and assist workers from multiple agencies when they are picking up their orders. If you are interested in learning more about the Closet's volunteer opportunities, please call Nancy Phythyon @ 207.985.6073. She looks forward to speaking with you. JOKE OF THE MONTH Submitted by Jack Bates BATTER UP Pat Kelly, a free-swinging outfielder with the Baltimore Orioles several years ago, was married to a minister s daughter and always went to chapel before games. One, day, Kelly encountered his manager, Earl Weaver. Earl, Kelly said, I feel great. I ve just left the chapel, and once again I ve learned to walk with the Lord. Too bad you didn t learn how to walk with the bases loaded, Weaver said. When s the last time you got down on your knees and prayed, Skip? Kelly asked. The last time I sent you up to pinch hit. Weaver said. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- We are all here for a spell. Get all the good laughs you can. Will Rogers 5
