What is Lent and why does it last forty days? Lent is a season of forty days, not counting Sundays, which begins on Ash Wednesday and ends on Holy Saturday. Lent comes from the Anglo Saxon word lencten, which means "spring." The forty days represents the time Jesus spent in the wilderness, enduring the temptation of Satan and preparing to begin his ministry. Lent is a time of repentance, fasting and preparation for the coming of Easter. It is a time of selfexamination and reflection. In the early church, Lent was a time to prepare new converts for baptism. Today, Christians focus on their relationship with God, often choosing to give up something or to volunteer and give of themselves for others. Sundays in Lent are not counted in the forty days because each Sunday represents a "minieaster" and the reverent spirit of Lent is tempered with joyful anticipation of the Resurrection. http://www.umc.org/ Lenten Sermon Series The Road to Resurrection Communion Sunday Sunday, March 5, 2017 February Sermon Series Scriptures: Genesis 2:15-17; 3:1-7 Communion Sunday Matthew 4:1-11 New Member Installation Good News: Weak, Weary & Tempted Sunday, February 5, 2017 Missions / Stewardship Sunday Scriptures Matthew 5:13-20 Sunday, March 12, 2017 Good News: You are Salt & Light, Beloved Scriptures: Genesis 12:1-4a Sunday, February 12, 2017 John 3:1-17 Good News: Hiding. Spring Forward: The clocks are set ahead one hour during Spring Forward. In 2017, this occurs on Sunday, March 12th. See more at: http://www.day-finder.com/daylight-savings- 2017.php#sthash.7yPRw0hD.dpuf The time-honored ritual of setting clocks forward an hour is coming in the spring, as daylight saving time (sometimes erroneously called daylight saving time) will kick in. The springtime clock-change continues the long tradition started by Benjamin Franklin to conserve energy. How Did It Start? Benjamin Franklin takes the honor (or the blame, depending on your view of the time changes) for coming up with the idea to reset clocks in the summer months as a way to conserve energy, according to David Prerau, author of "Seize the Daylight: The Curious and Contentious Story of Daylight Saving Time" (Thunder's Mouth Press, 2005). By moving clocks forward, people could take advantage of the extra evening daylight rather than wasting energy on lighting. At the time, Franklin was ambassador to Paris and so wrote a witty letter to the Journal of Paris in 1784, rejoicing over his "discovery" that the sun provides light as soon as it rises.
