Thank you for your generous support in last week s Peter s Pence Collection! If you missed the collection, it is not too late to give, visit w w w. u s c c b. o r g / nationalcollections, and click on the How to Give link. From the Desk of Fr. Christian Dear friends, Once upon a time in the Church there was an octave of Pentecost, meaning that Pentecost was celebrated for a whole week from Sunday to Sunday. The octave was suppressed in the late 1960 s following the Second Vatican Council. There is a famous story about Paul VI who presided over the last years of the Council. He had a great devotion to the Holy Spirit. When it came time to celebrate weekday Mass after Pentecost Sunday he was surprised to see that his master of ceremonies had put out green vestments. He was expecting red vestments. He asked: Isn t it still Pentecost? His attendant replied: Holy Father, you got rid of that. Apparently, he was unaware that he had made this happen! It is interesting to think that all the major solemnities such as Christmas and Easter follow the custom of the octave. It certainly makes sense. I tend to think that Pentecost is a mystery that merits more celebration and reflection. I think that we have lost something special in getting rid of the octave of Pentecost. Nothing however prevents us from continuing to meditate on this mystery of faith... So that s what I intend to do. For Pentecost Sunday I spoke about Mary and her relationship to the Holy Spirit and the Church. It is interesting to note that recently Pope Francis has established a new memorial, entitled, Mary, Mother of the Church to be celebrated after Pentecost Sunday. This is quite significant and it does provide us with another day to enter more deeply into the mystery. We call Mary the Spouse of the Holy Spirit. That she was present in the upper room with the apostles on Pentecost is very significant. She is an expert in the Holy Spirit. She had already encountered the Holy Spirit in a deep intimate way at the Annunciation. She received the Holy Spirit and responded with a resounding yes to the work of the Holy Spirit in her. It would only make sense that she was there at Pentecost teaching the early Church how to receive the Holy Spirit and then to respond generously to the Spirit s call. I can imagine her saying to the apostles: Hey guys, here s how it s done. She continues to model and teach us how to do this today. She teaches us how to respond most especially in her humility, docility and obedience. The Holy Spirit is still very active and alive in the Church and we can continue to pray for an outpouring of the Spirit upon the Church and the world. Each and every day we seek to respond more generously with Mary and all the saints. Another thought I had was that the work of the Holy Spirit is very quiet. He comes with little fanfare. He works quietly in the hearts of believers drawing us ever closer to Jesus and to the heart of the Father. This stood out to me powerfully last Saturday at the priestly ordination. To ordain a priest, the bishop lays hands upon the man to be ordained and quietly invokes the Holy Spirit. There was no tongues of fire or driving wind but silence. We know for certain that the Holy Spirit was doing something amazing. So to it is with us... we too can better encounter the power of the Holy Spirit in silence and in the quiet of our heart. Peace and God bless, Fr. Christian Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church 3 St. Joseph, Missouri

Let us remember to pray for all who may be food insecure, especially children. Thank You! Legion of Mary The parish is offering a new program called the Pilgrim Statue Program and it is conducted under the leadership of the Legion of Mary. This program will give parish households the opportunity to invite Mary into their home by the way of a pilgrim statue an image of Mary for a week. During that week, all the members of the household pray the Rosary together each day before the pilgrim statue. The hope is to get parish households to pray the Rosary daily as was requested by Our Lady at Fatima in 1917 at each of the six apparitions. So central is the Rosary to the Fatima message that Our Lady chose to identify herself as The Lady of the Rosary. If you have not already signed up and are interested in hosting the Pilgrim Statue please call or text Kelly Douglas 816-273-6067 or email at kellysdouglas@icloud.com. If anyone is interested in joining our Legion of Mary, please join us at a meeting to discern if Mary is calling you to this apostolate? The members and their spiritual leader, Fr. Christian meet every Wednesday at 9 am downstairs in Rm 116 B Marian Hall. Around Town Bishop James Johnston will celebrate the Golden Wedding Anniversary Mass at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception (11th & Broadway) on Sunday, June 10, 2018 at 2 pm.
