ST. PETER Acts 3: 13-15, 17-19 Peter, speaking to the Israelites, guides them through their religious history to the point that they realize the appalling truth that they have killed the God they worship. Peter hastens to soften the blow with God s mercy: Jesus prayer as He hung dying had been Father, forgive them; they do not know what they are doing. Peter also explains that there is a way out of their terrible burden of guilt. Christ s suffering and death have made it possible for their sin to be wiped away. The suffering was necessary so that we could all be saved. 1 John 2: 1-5a Imagine that you have been accused of a capital crime and there is no doubt that you are guilty. You are truly sorry for what you have done. If there were only someone who could speak for you, you would be willing to spend the rest of your life making amends. Imagine then Third Sunday of Easter that the greatest trial lawyer comes to your defense. Because he is so highly respected and speaks so compassionately and wisely, the judge lets you go free. That lifting of burdens, that rush of joy, that fervent desire to spend our redeemed life in praise and thanksgiving all that is freely available when we turn from our sins back to Jesus. Luke 24: 35-48 Peter and the others had still not been able to grasp that God has power even over death. Perhaps they felt that they ought to be strong enough to carry on by themselves as they had when Jesus sent them out two by two. Then they had come back thrilled and confident; now they were weak, frightened, and guilt-ridden because of their pathetic cowardice and disloyalty on Thursday and Friday. Could it be their guilt that prevented them from seeing the WARWICK truth? Was their wounded selfimage causing them to hide from God, just as Adam and Eve had done? In any case, they are in great need of reassurance, but when Jesus comes to be with them again and reassure them, they cannot believe their eyes. Jesus sense of humor shows through as He voices their fears: Touch me and see for yourselves; a ghost has no flesh and bones as you can see that I have. At last they look at Him with both physical and spiritual eyes wide open. They are finally receptive as Jesus patiently explains again about His fulfillment of the Scriptures.
