Registration Deadline: August 31, 2009 From the Pastor s Desk Simon Peter s allowing Jesus to use his boat was a small action, but look what it yielded in his life. Never forget that great growth comes from small things, small actions, and small beginnings. (Luke 5:1 11 v. 3) Love, Pastor Thompson Our Vision Statement Evangelist Susie C. Owens Co Pastor Greater Mt. Calvary Holy Church Washington, DC "The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because He has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor." Luke 4:18 19 (NKJ) It is the vision of Mt. Olive to be a church that is intentional in its efforts to identify and meet the needs of broken, hurt and oppressed people in the greater Glen Allen area through the message and ministry of Jesus Christ.

SUMMER QUARTER: JUNE*JULY*AUGUST 2009 PENTECOST May 31 August 23 (The pulpit attire is Red) PENTECOST, the fiftieth day after Easter, comes from the Greek word for fiftieth, pentekoste. Greek speaking Jews called the Jewish Feast of Weeks the Day of Pentecost. Acts 2 tells how the anxious and fearful disciples, who had gathered on the Day of Pentecost, were filled with the Holy Spirit and thereafter preached boldly the gospel of Jesus Christ. This is the day on which the church received the Holy Spirit. COLORS FOR PENTACOST: RED OR RED ON WHITE. RED, THE COLOR OF FIRE, REPRESENTS THE HOLY SPIRIT. General Theme For This Quarter: CALL SEALED WITH A PROMISE The study this quarter begins with the theme of God s call of a covenant community as reflected in the Old Testament books of the law, specifically Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. The call of God to live in covenant community today is emphasized through these lessons. We hope that you will join us as we are focusing on: UNIT #3 CALLED TO CHOOSE LIFE This unit reflects on God s ongoing call to obedience and defines what actions demonstrate faithfulness and rebelliousness. Five Old Testament lessons illustrate that God remains faithful to God s promise whether or not we choose to obey. CLASSES FOR EVERYONE!! CLASSES FROM KINDERGARTEN TO SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL TWO CHOICES FOR ADULTS YOUNG ADULTS AGE 19 AND UP ADULTS ALL AGES WELCOME DAILY BIBLE READINGS THIS WEEK S LESSON: Moses Disobeys Numbers 20:1 13 Even great leaders may fail to heed higher authority. Why do people disregard authority? As the Israelites arrived at Kadesh, there was no water and the people grumbled. An all knowing God told Moses to speak to the rock before them and water would come out for them to drink. In his anger with and tiredness of the people, Moses disobeyed God s command and hit the rock. Because he did not trust God to provide for the people, Moses disobeyed God. God was displeased and Moses suffered a great consequence; he did not get to go over into the Promised Land (Canaan). NEXT WEEK S LESSON: (August 23, 2009) Calls For Obedience Deuteronomy 6:1 9, 20 24 When people obey laws, they expect that life will be good. Why do people care at all about laws and try to follow them? Deuteronomy states that God gives laws for our benefit. MONDAY: Rewards of Obedience Leviticus 26:3 13 TUESDAY : Penalties of Disobedience Leviticus 26:14 26 WEDNESDAY : Consequences of Disobedience 1 Samuel 15:17 26 THURSDAY: Disobeying the Son John 3:31 36 FRIDAY: Listening and Obeying Psalm 81:11 16 SATURDAY: Treasure God s Commands Proverbs 2:1 11 SUNDAY: Diligently Observing God s Law Deuteronomy 6:1 9, 20 24 Sermon Highlights: August 9, 2009 Sermon Title: Transformed Because He Cares Scriptural Text: 1 Peter 5:1 9 Main Idea: You can be transformed because God cares: Points: (1) Put all your cares where they really belong (2) We find help with the debate about God (3) Puts you on the road for God to show Himself strong & mighty For the full message order a CD of the service from the Media Ministry.
