Order of Service 26 June 2016 PASSING ON THE MANTLE
WELCOME TO KNOX Knox Church is a congregation within the Presbyterian Church of Aotearoa New Zealand. We aim to create Christian community in which people of all ages, sexual orientations, cultural backgrounds and socio-economic situations are included as equally valued participants in our congregational life. We cherish our diversity, offering a safe place of belonging to any who wish to explore their beliefs in an atmosphere promoting discussion, the development of healthy relationships and spiritual growth. We strive to be open to dialogue and shared experiences with people of other faiths. We enjoy worshipping the God made known in Jesus, endeavouring to do so in ways that are relevant to our daily lives, respect the integrity of creation, and make a positive difference to our wider world. A loop system for hearing aids operates at Knox. Toilets are available through the door on the lectern side of the sanctuary. The Call to Worship: We light a candle in the name of Jesus Christ, the Light of the world. JESUS, A SPECTACULAR RESULT OF GRACE, LOVE AND FLESH; JESUS, WHO CALLS US TO FOLLOW HIM; JESUS, IN WHOSE SPIRIT WE GROW. Kia noho a Ihowa ki a koutou. God be with you. MA IHOWA KOE E MANAAKI. GOD BLESS YOU. Hymn: Light of the world Jim Strathdee (b. 1941)
I am the light of the world. You people come and follow me! If you follow and love you ll learn the mystery of what you were meant to do and be. 1. To find the lonely and the lost, to heal their broken souls with love, to feed the hungry children with warmth and good food, to feel the earth below, the sky above; I am the light... 2. To free the prisoners from their chains, to make the powerful care, to rebuild the nations with strength and goodwill, to be at one with people everywhere; I am the light... 3. To bring hope to every task you do, to dance at a baby s new birth, to make music in an old one s heart, and sing to the colours of the earth. I am the light... Jim Strathdee, (b. 1941) alt.
Prayer of Approach Following the God who fashions and shapes, who transforms good creation into moving beauty. LEARNING THE MYSTERY OF WHAT WE ARE MEANT TO DO AND BE. Following the God who turns servants into prophets, who readies us for deeper service and worship. LEARNING THE MYSTERY OF WHAT WE ARE MEANT TO DO AND BE. Discovering, as we go, that grace has surrounded us, that love has made us strong, that we are ready to be the body of Christ. LEARNING THE MYSTERY OF WHAT WE ARE MEANT TO DO AND BE. Being delighted in by the God who has miracles for us to do, who has responsibilities for us to receive, who has work to be done in the world. LEARNING THE MYSTERY OF WHAT WE ARE MEANT TO DO AND BE. What we are not meant to do and be... We create mantles of fear and greed, OF CAPTIVITY AND VIOLENCE. We transmit to one another, and to our children, creeds of self and suspicion, OF HATRED AND JUDGMENT. We turn away from opportunities to bless others, AND WE REFUSE TO BE GROWN IN GRACE.... Lord have mercy. CHRIST HAVE MERCY. Lord have mercy.
Assurance and Response... In the name of Christ I say to you: You are forgiven and you are free. THANKS BE TO GOD. Prayer of Supplication: Gracious and nurturing God, through the old man, Elijah, you called the young Elisha into service. IN SERVICE YOU GREW HIM INTO A PROPHET. Enable us also to hear your call, to respond in faith, AND TO BE MADE READY, THROUGH YOUR ENABLING GRACE, FOR LIFE THAT IS EXTRAORDINARY. We pray this even as Jesus taught us, saying:... OUR FATHER IN HEAVEN HALLOWED BE YOUR NAME, YOUR KINGDOM COME, YOUR WILL BE DONE, ON EARTH AS IN HEAVEN. GIVE US TODAY OUR DAILY BREAD. FORGIVE US OUR SINS AS WE FORGIVE THOSE WHO SIN AGAINST US. SAVE US FROM THE TIME OF TRIAL AND DELIVER US FROM EVIL. FOR THE KINGDOM, THE POWER AND THE GLORY ARE YOURS NOW AND FOR EVER. AMEN. The Passing of the Peace Kia tau tonu te rangimarie o te Ariki ki a koutou. The peace of Christ be with you all. A KI A KOE ANO HOKI; AND ALSO WITH YOU. We exchange a sign of peace with one another.
If there are younger ones present A Conversation with the Younger Ones Young People s Blessing: Young ones, go to your worship with our blessing. TAKE OUR FAITH AND HOPE; MAKE NEW THINGS WITH WHAT YOU HAVE BEEN GIVEN. MAY GOD BLESS AND GROW YOU. AMEN. Young ones are welcome to move through to the Sala del Sol (upstairs in the Knox Centre) for well supervised, faith-based youth activities. The First Lesson: 1 Kings 19: 15-16, 19-21 In this is the Word of God. THANKS BE TO GOD. Knox Singers: O Lord, I will praise thee Gordon Jacob (1895-1984) The Second Lesson: 2 Kings 2: 1-2, 6-14 Hymn: Monk s Gate In this is the Word of God. THANKS BE TO GOD. English traditional melody 1. We who would valiant be: let us not waver, but in true constancy follow the Saviour. There s no discouragement shall make us once relent our first avowed intent to live as pilgrims.
2. Those who may us surround with dismal stories, only themselves confound; our strength the more is. No foes shall give us fright, ours is the one true Light; we will make our right to live as pilgrims. 3. Since, Saviour, you defend us with your Spirit, we know we at the end shall life inherit. Cruel rumours, flee away! We ll fear not what they say; we ll labour night and day to live as pilgrims. John Bunyan (1628-1688), alt. Sermon: Ready for the mantle? Generally, sermons are posted on our website shortly after the service at: http://www.knoxchurch.co.nz/sermons.html Hard copies of the sermons are available before and after the service ask the person at the door. Music for Reflection: Libre Jean Langlais (1907-1991)
Hymn: Kingsfold Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958) 1. I heard the voice of Jesus say, Come unto me and rest, lay down, O weary one, lay down your head upon my breast, I came to Jesus as I was, weary and worn and sad; I found in him a resting-place, and he has made me glad. 2. I heard the voice of Jesus say, Behold, I freely give the living water; thirsty one, stoop down and drink and live. I came to Jesus, and I drank of that life-giving stream; my thirst was quenched, my soul revived, and now I live in him. 3. I heard the voice of Jesus say, I am this dark world s Light; look unto me, your morn shall rise, and all your day be bright. I looked to Jesus, and I found in him my Star, my Sun; and in that Light of life I ll walk till travelling days are done. Horatius Bonar (1808-1889)

Hymn: Wolvercote William Harold Ferguson (1874-1950) 1. O Jesus, I have promised to serve you to the end; Lord, be for ever near me, my master and my friend: I shall not fear the battle if you are by my side, nor wander from the pathway if you will be my guide. 2. O let me hear you speaking in accents clear and still, above the storms of passion, the murmurs of self-will; Lord, speak to reassure me, to chasten or control; O speak, and make me listen, true guardian of my soul.
3. Lord, let me see your footmarks and in them plant my own; that I may follow boldly and in your strength alone: O guide me, call me, draw me, uphold me to the end; and then in heaven receive me, my Saviour and my friend.
