T.K. s Reflections Thomas K. LaBombard My good friend Tim Staples and me in our Marine Corps days (I m the short one). Some of you might recognize him from Catholic Answers. He is now an author and apologist of the Catholic faith. The Blessing of Ignorance Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter. - Isaiah 5:20, NIV The other day a friend emailed me a quote of the Indian guru Osho, which read, People who are spiritually minded tend to suffer from anxiety and depression more. You know why? Because their eyes are open to a world that is in need of repair. They literally have an increased ability to feel the emotions of people around them. As I read this, I couldn t help but reflect on Jeremiah who was known as the weeping prophet. His heart and soul were crushed for Israel because he knew they had walked away from God s law, and that God was going to punish them. And that God did. The Babylonians conquered Israel, burned Jerusalem, and took the Israelites from their land to live in colonies in Babylon. It would be seventy years before they could return to the Promised Land. Growing up, I knew there was evil in the world, but it was out there. I watched the evening news, read and heard stories, but the most I personally witnessed was underage smoking and drinking, with an occasional fight. When I enlisted in the Marine Corps, I had a romantic notion that I was going to be a part of taking down the evil empire of the USSR. Communism was an evil that needed/needs to be purged from society; but it did not take long for me to recognize my view of the world, rather of American society, was more of a delusion than reality. Perhaps most of us were delusional in the belief that our own culture was truly righteous. Just because one is raised in a church does not necessarily mean one lives for Christ. Anyway, looking back, we gave an awful lot of money to missionaries to help purge the evil around the world. Yes, it is biblical to give to missions, but I wonder if maybe we did so at the neglect of our own culture and society. Maybe we turned a blind eye to those here at home who were in spiritual need. Eventually, after my discharge from the Marines, I became a pastor, and eventually a Clinical Social Worker. It was then that I truly understood exactly how disturbed we really were. Listening to my clients it became excruciatingly disturbing to learn exactly what one person can do to another, the sins committed, and our attitude(s) toward others. I soon become cynical. I missed the blessing of ignorance. Due to all of this, just as Jeremiah, my soul has been crushed by the open debauchery of our nation, and it appears to get worse by the day. What happened? How did evil become good and good become evil? Did we as Christians judge others too harshly? Were we more concerned with spreading the Gospel to other nations? Did we take for granted that we needed to spread the Gospel in our own nation as well? Did we forget to love? I really don t know the answer; we can probably go insane trying to figure it out. Thankfully, one day during prayer I recalled the following scripture: Furthermore, just as they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, so God gave them over to a depraved mind, so that they do what ought not to be done. They have become filled with every kind 6
Tempus Fugit, Momento Mori Vivat Jesus! of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips, slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents; they have no understanding, no fidelity, no love, no mercy. Although they know God s righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them. (Romans 1:28-32) My only solace was I knew that this had been predicted long ago. Despite of all this, it isn t too late. Christ said, See to it, then, that the light within you is not darkness (Luke 11:35). He also said: You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven (Matthew 5:14-16). Be the light? How do we do that? Basically, we live the way Christ told us. We share the Gospel with those we meet and know. Still, it s more than just that. The Book of Mark 12:30-31 reads, Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. The second is this: Love your neighbor as yourself. There is no commandment greater than these ; and then in Luke 6:27 he said, But to you who are listening I say: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you. God s light is greater than all the world s darkness. Lord Father, please teach us to love as Christ loved. Teach us to share your Gospel as you would have us share it. Touch the minds and spirits of those we meet so they may see your light in us. Teach us to be the light in the darkness. Lord, we pray that you bind the principalities of darkness and break the chains they have on our nation. Your will be done. Amen.
