RINGING OF THE BELLS THE BATISM OF OUR LORD St. Lucas Ev. Lutheran hurch January 8, 2017 WORDS OF WELOME AND GREETING The people may greet one another in the name of the Lord, saying, eace be with you, as a sign of reconciliation and of the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace (Matt. 5:22 24; Eph. 4:1 3). OENING HYMN The Star roclaims the King Is Here LSB 399 1 The star proclaims the King is here; But, Herod, why this senseless fear? For He who offers heav nly birth Seeks not the kingdoms of this earth. 2 The eastern sages saw from far And followed on His guiding star; And, led by light, to light they trod And by their gifts confessed their God. 3 Within the Jordan s sacred flood The heav nly Lamb in meekness stood That He, of whom no sin was known, Might cleanse His people from their own. 4 And oh, what miracle divine, When water reddened into wine! He spoke the word, and forth it flowed In streams that nature ne er bestowed. 5 For this Thy glad epiphany All glory, Jesus, be to Thee, Whom with the Father we adore, And Holy Spirit evermore. ublic domain 2
ONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION In the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Our help is in the name of the Lord, who made heaven and earth. If You, O Lord, kept a record of sins, O Lord, who could stand? But with You there is forgiveness; therefore You are feared. Since we are gathered to hear God s Word, call upon Him in prayer and praise, and receive the body and blood of our Lord Jesus hrist in the fellowship of this altar, let us first consider our unworthiness and confess before God and one another that we have sinned in thought, word, and deed, and that we cannot free ourselves from our sinful condition. Together as His people let us take refuge in the infinite mercy of God, our heavenly Father, seeking His grace for the sake of hrist, and saying: God, be merciful to me, a sinner. Almighty God, have mercy upon us, forgive us our sins, and lead us to everlasting life. Amen. Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of hrist, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. KYRIE In peace let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy; hrist, have mercy; Lord, have mercy. For the peace from above and for our salvation let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy; hrist, have mercy; Lord, have mercy. For the peace of the whole world, for the well-being of the hurch of God, and for the unity of all let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy; hrist, have mercy; Lord, have mercy. 3
For this holy house and for all who offer here their worship and praise let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy; hrist, have mercy; Lord, have mercy. Help, save, comfort, and defend us gracious Lord. Lord, have mercy; hrist, have mercy; Lord, have mercy. GLORIA IN EXELSIS SALUTATION AND OLLET OF THE DAY The Lord be with you. And also with you. 4
Let us pray. Father in heaven, at the Baptism of Jesus in the Jordan River You proclaimed Him Your beloved Son and anointed Him with the Holy Spirit. Make all who are baptized in His name faithful in their calling as Your children and inheritors with Him of everlasting life; through the same Jesus hrist, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. OLD TESTAMENT READING Isaiah 42:1 9 1 Here is my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen one in whom I delight; I will put my Spirit on him, and he will bring justice to the nations. 2 He will not shout or cry out, or raise his voice in the streets. 3 A bruised reed he will not break, and a smoldering wick he will not snuff out. In faithfulness he will bring forth justice; 4 he will not falter or be discouraged till he establishes justice on earth. In his teaching the islands will put their hope. 5 This is what God the LORD says the reator of the heavens, who stretches them out, who spreads out the earth with all that springs from it, who gives breath to its people, and life to those who walk on it: 6 I, the LORD, have called you in righteousness; I will take hold of your hand. I will keep you and will make you to be a covenant for the people and a light for the Gentiles, 7 to open eyes that are blind, to free captives from prison and to release from the dungeon those who sit in darkness. 8 I am the LORD; that is my name! I will not yield my glory to another or my praise to idols. 9 See, the former things have taken place, and new things I declare; before they spring into being I announce them to you. A This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. EISTLE Romans 6:1 11 1 What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? 2 By no means! We are those who have died to sin; how can we live in it any longer? 3 Or don t you know that all of us who were baptized into hrist Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were therefore 5
buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as hrist was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life. 5 For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly also be united with him in a resurrection like his. 6 For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body ruled by sin might be done away with, [a] that we should no longer be slaves to sin 7 because anyone who has died has been set free from sin. 8 Now if we died with hrist, we believe that we will also live with him. 9 For we know that since hrist was raised from the dead, he cannot die again; death no longer has mastery over him. 10 The death he died, he died to sin once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God. 11 In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in hrist Jesus. A This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. HOLY GOSEL Matthew 3:13 17 The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the third chapter. Glory to You, O Lord. 6
13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John. 14 But John tried to deter him, saying, I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me? 15 Jesus replied, Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness. Then John consented. 16 As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. 17 And a voice from heaven said, This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. This is the Gospel of the Lord. raise to You, O hrist. NIENE REED I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus hrist, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under ontius ilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end. And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy hristian and apostolic hurch, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. HYMN OF THE DAY Baptized into Your Name Most Holy LSB 590 1 Baptized into Your name most holy, O Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, I claim a place, though weak and lowly, Among Your saints, Your chosen host. Buried with hrist and dead to sin, Your Spirit now shall live within. 2 My loving Father, here You take me To be henceforth Your child and heir. My faithful Savior, here You make me The fruit of all Your sorrows share. O Holy Spirit, comfort me When threat ning clouds around I see. 3 My faithful God, You fail me never; Your promise surely will endure. O cast me not away forever If words and deeds become impure. Have mercy when I come defiled; Forgive, lift up, restore Your child. 4 All that I am and love most dearly Receive it all, O Lord, from me. Let me confess my faith sincerely; Help me Your faithful child to be! Let nothing that I am or own Serve any will but Yours alone. ublic domain SERMON Germinate! John 12:24-26 24 Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. 25 Whoever loves his life loses it, and whoever hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. 26 If anyone serves me, he must follow me; and where I am, there will my servant be also. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him. RAYERS (After each petition. astor: Lord, in Your Mercy; eople: Hear our rayer ) 8
+SERVIE OF THE SARAMENT+ REFAE The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give Him thanks and praise. It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, through Jesus hrist, our Lord; for what had been hidden from before the foundation of the world You have made known to the nations in Your Son. In Him, being found in the substance of our mortal nature, You have manifested the fullness of Your glory. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and saying: SANTUS 9
THE WORDS OF OUR LORD LORD S RAYER Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. AX DOMINI The peace of the Lord be with you always. Amen. ANGUS DEI 10
