St. Rosalie s Bulletin www.saintrosalie.com Page 3 From The Pastor s Desk In todays Gospel on this great Solemnity we hear: So they went in haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the infant lying in the manger. When they saw this, they made known the message that had been told them about this child. All who heard it were amazed by what had been told them by the shepherds. And Mary kept all these things, reflecting on them in her heart. Then the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, just as it had been told to them. The Circumcision and Naming of Jesus. When eight days were completed for his circumcision, he was named Jesus, the name given him by the angel before he was conceived in the womb. LUKE 2:16-21 A Holy Day of Obligation Some of you may remember before Vatican Council II, we referred to January 1, New Year s Day, as the Solemnity of Mary Mother of God. It is a Holy Day of Obligation. It is a Sunday this year as well! Masses will be the 5 p.m. Anticipated Vigil Mass on Saturday, December 31 and the regular Sunday Mass Schedule on New Year s Day, January 1 at 8, 9:30, 11 a.m. in English and 4 p.m. in Spanish. We will have Prayers and a Rosary for our nation at 4 p.m., led by a group of parishioners. In East Quogue, we will celebrate Mass at 9 a.m. East Quogue will close until Palm Sunday, as is our custom. The Octave of Christmas. What a beautiful time during the Octave of Christmas, known as Christmas Week to celebrate the fact that Emmanuel, Our God is With Us! Gathering with family and friends around the crèche, and by the tree, maybe in front of the fireplace, and mostly at the table. What a Blessing the Christmas season is for each and every one of us! Whether you have been visiting family and friends, caroling together, giving, receiving and opening gifts, all these Christ-centered actions speak of the fact that Our God Loves US SO, SO, SO MUCH! During these days, we celebrate the Feasts of the Holy Family as well as today when we celebrate the Feast of Mary who is the Mother of God. The Theotokos (Greek: Θεοτόκος) translates as: Mary, the mother of Jesus or Mother of God. Our Eastern Rite brothers and sisters are very familiar with this understanding. The Icon of the Theotokos, is one of the most revered by the Eastern Rite of Catholicism and in the Orthodox Communions. It speaks of Mary being the God-bearer and the one who gives birth to God. At the Council of Ephesus in 431 A.D., Mary is named as the Theotokos because Jesus as her son has two natures, human and divine in one person. Welcome Home! And those of you who have taken the first step in Coming Home for Christmas, we want you to stay with us. Here s your invitation. Now that you have taken the first step in Coming Home for Christmas why not think about staying with us! We are all on the same earthly pilgrimage to heaven; My dear parishioners encourage your family and friends who may have taken the first step in Coming Home for Christmas to stay with us. I wish all former, current and future parishioners a New Year filled with Peace! May 2017 be a year of Blessings and Health and New Beginnings for All of Us! Bishop-designate Barres As you know, Pope Francis has named Bishop John O. Barres as our new Bishop. We are planning to send him our prayers and hopes for our Diocese and for himself as he prepares to take over our Diocese on January 31. I ask you to consider offering your prayers and good works for the success of His ministry here in our midst by participating in our St. Rosalie s Spiritual Bouquet for him. Please estimate a number, which we will total and send to Bishop Barres when he comes to lead our Diocese next month. Please place the completed form in the collection box located in the lobby or bring to Parish Center. The deadline is January 15. A Spiritual Bouquet for our new Bishop, John O. Barres I will offer my Masses Personal prayers Holy Communions Rosaries Good works Offerings for the Poor Visit the sick or imprisoned Feed the hungry Comfort the dying Other spiritual and corporal works of mercy Father Ed Mary, the Holy Mother of God January 1, 2017

Page 6 www.saintrosalie.com St. Rosalie s Bulletin Prayer for the Ministry of Project Rachel Father, source of healing and forgiveness, we pray for all parents overwhelmed by grief and sorrow at the loss of their son or daughter to abortion: You never abandon those who hope in you; so we pray that the hearts of those wounded by their abortion might be open to your Divine Mercy that they would know the grace of repentance and so experience the embrace of the Father. We pray that Jesus, the Good Shepherd, so rich in love and compassion, may hear the cry and see the tears of each of these mothers and fathers so He may heal their broken hearts and restore them to life. Give these grieving mothers and fathers the consolation of believing and trusting that her child is now living in the Lord that this may soothe the terror of their soul. We pray that the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of all tenderness and our Mother, may strengthen their faith in You. We ask this through Christ our Lord, who conquered sin and death, and who lives with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. May the peace and joy of the New Year be yours! Ronkonkoma Cenacle Retreat Center 631-588-8366 www.cenaclesisters.org/ronkonkoma Our Hearts are Enchanted by the Sacred Heart of Jesus is the topic of the retreat January 13-15. The prophet Jeremiah knows us well: More tortuous than all else is the human heart, JEREMIAH 17:9. We are confounded by the confusions, complexities and enigmas of our relationships in daily life. Jesus lived the human mystery in all its obscurities and revealed God s selfemptying love as the doorway to a peace the world cannot give. We long for that peace, yet we are both captivated and frightened by its demands. Can we surrender our hearts into the Sacred Heart? The presenter is Father Larry Lewis, M.M.
