Sunday 3 rd February 2019 The Fourth Sunday After Epiphany First Anglican Service on Sydney Cove, conducted by Richard Johnson, Sydney 1788 The Church of England arrived in this land with the First Fleet, mostly in the soldiers and convicts who belonged to this, the established Church in England. Just one clergyman, the 35- year-old Revd Richard Johnston, a man of Evangelical conviction, was on board the fleet s eleven vessels. He was there only because of political pressure from the Eclectic Society, a group of evangelicals, including William Wilberforce and John Newton, interested in missions and prison reform. On 3 February 1788, under some trees, Johnson conducted public worship for the first time in the new colony, using the Book of Common Prayer, and preaching on Psalm 116:12. On 17 February he celebrated Holy Communion in the markee of Lieutenant Clark, who resolved to keep this table as long as I live, for it is the first table that ever the Lord s Supper was eat of in this country. His flock consisted of soldiers who mostly mocked him, convicts who mostly ignored him, and a few Aborigines, with whom he was unable to make real contact. Johnson supported Phillip s policy of befriending the Aborigines, took a native girl, Abaroo (Boo-ron) into his family, gave his daughter an Aboriginal name Milbah (b. 1790), and once remained as a hostage while Bennelong visited the Governor. Johnson faced a nigh-impossible task. He was required to conduct services, keep watch on public morality, oversee schoolmasters and act as magistrate. The authorities saw him as useful for keeping order among the convicts but refused to help with a building. He worked hard for twelve years, taking services, visiting, baptising, marrying and burying while having to tend his own farm his main solace from the pressures of life. When Phillip was succeeded by Lieutenant Governor Francis Grose in 1792, Johnson s time of troubles began. The next year, Johnson, despairing of getting a church built by the government, irritated Grose by putting up a wattle and daub chapel at his own expense a cost of 67 12s 111 2d only to see it later burnt down. Governor Hunter (1794 96) was more sympathetic, recompensing Johnson for the cost of the chapel. Johnson supervised the colony s schools, and helped establish an orphan s institution, but was worn out and, after applying for sick leave in 1798, returned to England (with Hunter) in 1800. He died on 13 March 1827. Sources include Ken Cable, Richard Johnson entry, ADB. St Mark s stands on the traditional lands of the Bundjalung Nation. The Fourth Sunday after Epiphany February 3 rd 2019 Sentence Jesus read from the prophet Isaiah: The Spirit of the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the poor, to proclaim release to the captives. Luke 4.18 Collect Life-giving God, who sent your Son Jesus to proclaim your kingdom and to teach with authority: anoint us with your Spirit, that we too may bring good news to the poor, bind up the broken-hearted, and proclaim liberty to the captive; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. Diocesan Prayer God in whom we live and move and have our being, we thank you for Jesus Christ who is the good news. By the power of your Holy Spirit, enable us to be people who transform lives, make disciples and grow communities, that your glory may be revealed in all creation. We pray this through your Son, Jesus Christ. Amen First Reading Isaiah 61.8-11 8 For I the Lord love justice, I hate robbery and wrongdoing; I will faithfully give them their recompense, and I will make an everlasting covenant with them. 9 Their descendants shall be known among the nations, and their offspring among the peoples; all who see them shall acknowledge that they are a people whom the Lord has blessed. 10 I will greatly rejoice in the Lord, my whole being shall exult in my God; for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation, he has covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself with a garland, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels. 11 For as the earth brings forth its shoots, and as a garden causes what is sown in it to spring up, so the Lord God will cause righteousness and praise to spring up before all the nations. Hear the word of the Lord, Thanks be to God.
Psalm: 116.11-18 11 How shall I repay the Lord: for all his benefits to me? 12 I will take up the cup of salvation: and call upon the name of the Lord. 13 I will pay my vows to the Lord: in the presence of all his people. 14 Grievous in the sight of the Lord: is the death of his faithful ones. 15 O Lord, I am your servant, your servant and the child of your handmaid: you have unloosed my bonds. 16 I will offer you a sacrifice of thanksgiving: and call upon the name of the Lord. 17 I will pay my vows to the Lord: in the presence of all his people, 18 In the courts of the house of the Lord: even in your midst, O Jerusalem. Praise the Lord. Second Reading Philippians 4.4-8 4 Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. 5 Let your gentleness be known to everyone. The Lord is near. 6 Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. 8 Finally, beloved, whatever is true, whatever is honourable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is pleasing, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. Hear the word of the Lord, Thanks be to God. Gospel John 6.25-35 The Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Glory to you Lord Jesus Christ. 25 When they found him on the other side of the lake, they said to him, Rabbi, when did you come here? 26 Jesus answered them, Very truly, I tell you, you are looking for me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves. 27 Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For it is on him that God the Father has set his seal. 28 Then they said to him, What must we do to perform the works of God? 29 Jesus answered them, This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent. 30 So they said to him, What sign are you going to give us then, so that we may see it and believe you? What work are you performing? 31 Our ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written, He gave them bread from heaven to eat. 32 Then Jesus said to them, Very truly, I tell you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. 33 For the bread of God is that which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world. 34 They said to him, Sir, give us this bread always. 35 Jesus said to them, I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. This is the Gospel of the Lord, Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ.
