SEPT/OCT 2014 Vol 56.5 The Yates Baptist Association exists to encourage and equip our congregations to be healthy, reproducing churches that will effectively fulfill their mission for Christ. AFTERNOON SESSION: 4:00 PM Annual Sermon: Rev. Jeff McCarthy Pastor, Rose of Sharon Baptist Church DINNER: 5:30 PM Cost of Meal: $9.00 Deadline for purchasing meal ticket: Friday, Oct. 24 EVENING SESSION: 6:45 PM Guest Speaker: Rev. Jeremiah 29:11 says, For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. Twenty years ago God s plan for me and my family was to come and work alongside the churches of the Yates Baptist Association. It has been a challenging and fruitful ministry for these 19½ years. Now God is leading in a new direction. After much prayer and discernment, on July 15 I resigned as Director of Missions for Yates Baptist Association to accept the call to Roanoke, Virginia to be the Executive Director for the Roanoke Valley Baptist Association. This was a most difficult decision. It is not easy for us to say goodbye after 19 years of ministry with Yates Baptist Association but Sally and I strongly feel that God has opened this door for us to minister among the churches in the Roanoke, VA area. My purpose has always been to focus on God s Kingdom and to bring honor to God in all that I tried to do as your leader. The journey together has had many challenges, but there have also been many wonderful things accomplished through the churches. James Bridges in his book Managing Transitions states, It isn t the changes that do you in, it s the transitions. I have discovered the truth of that statement and am experiencing some of that now as Sally and I are in the midst of transition of jobs, homes and relationships. Please pray for us during this time. Yates Baptist Association is now at a crossroads. There are many who value the work that we have been doing together. Still there are others who see little value in partnering with sister Baptist Churches or who focus on our differences instead of those strong ties that bind us together. It is my prayer that churches will step up and see that if God is to be glorified and Jesus is to be honored, you will need to join together not pull apart. James Emery White in his new book The Rise of the Nones states, The lack of civility in our world has become so pandemic that it is now widely chronicled as a cultural phenomenon. This phenomenon is bleeding over into our relationships as brothers and sisters in Christ and it is affecting our work and witness in a lost and dying world. White goes on to say about John 17 that, Christ s torrent of prayer and pleading begins and ends with a passionate call for unity among those who did and would claim His name. The challenge is great. As I have reported recently, 70-75% of the people who live in the association s area of influence do not attend anybody s church. People are moving to this area from all over the world. There are many unreached people groups right here in Durham and the surrounding areas. The churches have opportunities as never before in their history to literally reach to the ends of the earth with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. I trust that you will make good decisions on reaching these people, making disciples and strengthening the churches. Thank you for the privilege of serving with you. I am appreciative of Faye Bassett and the staff that have worked alongside me during these many years. I leave you in the capable hands of Teresa Dotson and Michael Bond along with the Associational Leadership Team. There are some important decisions to be made in the next few months. It is my prayer that you will seek God s direction, share your ideas, support the decisions and move forward, in unity with a commitment to impact the Durham area with the Gospel. Acts 19:10 gives the account of Paul discipling the Christians at Ephesus for two years and the result was, so that all who live in Asia heard the word of the Lord, both Jews and Greeks. May this be a challenge to you and your church. May God richly bless you as you continue the journey together. Know that together you can make a difference. As you know, Dr. John Saunders has resigned as Director of Missions for YBA and on October 1, 2014, he will begin his new position as Executive Director for the Roanoke Valley Baptist Association in Roanoke, VA. John has faithfully served the Yates Baptist Association since November 15, 1994 (almost 20 years). His vision for our churches, his leadership, love for the Lord and burden to reach the lost in the Durham area have been essential to the many missions and ministries of this association. He will be missed but we pray God s blessings on him and his family as they minister in Roanoke. We are planning a farewell gathering for John and Sally on Sunday, September 14 from 2:00 4:00 p.m. at Yates Baptist Church, 2819 Chapel Hill Road, Durham, NC 27707. This will be a floating reception with an official Associational presentation being made at 3:00 p.m. We invite you and others from your church to attend. In order to help us to plan for this event, please call or email Teresa Dotson to RSVP by Friday, September 12 (919-489-3396 or tdotson5@frontier.com). If you are unable to attend but would like to send in a card or farewell greeting, please mail it to Yates Baptist Association, PO Box 52381, Durham, NC 27717. We will compile these along with any cards brought to the reception and present them to John and Sally in a special basket.
