UNIVERSITY BAPTIST CHURCH God s Love Zoe Wilson God has called University Baptist Church to minister to the University Community and to the residents of the Greater Charlottesville-Albemarle Community, serving as agents of Christ s love and justice for those in need and offering a vital family of faith.
WORSHIP OF GOD IN CHRIST May 6, 2018 11:00 a.m. Marking the Hour We mark the hour, awakening us to the presence of God, alerting us to the voice of Christ, and centering us in the embrace of the Holy Spirit. Isabella Canseco and Connor Marshsall (We open the Bible to remind us that God speaks to the people through the Holy Word.) Setting the Table (We prepare the table with a loaf of bread and a cup, symbolizing Christ s atoning death, the Church s identity as the one Body of Christ, and the fullness of salvation in the future of God.) Invocation... Nick Martindale Welcome... Sarah Wilson Instrumental Call to Worship Church Clap... Will Wagoner Call to Worship (based on Psalm 98)... Leader: People: 7 Let the sea resound, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it. 8 Let the rivers clap their hands, let the mountains sing together for joy; 9 let them sing before the Lord! ** Hymn Love Divine, All Loves Excelling (see insert)... Congregation Mission Moment... Report from OIAM Gospel Lesson John 15:9-17 (NRSV)... Jacob Morris 9 As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. 10 If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father s commands and remain in his love. 11 I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete. 12 My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. 13 Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one s life for one s friends. 14 You are my friends if you do what I command. 15 I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you. 16 You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit fruit that will last and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you. 17 This is my command: Love each other. Leader: This is the Word of the Lord! People: Thanks be to God! ** Hymn They ll Know We are Christians (see insert)... Congregation (As we sing this hymn, all children are invited to come to the front for the Children s Sermon.) Children s Sermon... Hunter Cooper (At the conclusion of the Children s Sermon, all children, kindergarten through grade two, are invited to attend Children s Church.) Epistle Lesson 1 John 5:1-6 (NRSV)... Carter Groff 1 Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and everyone who loves the parent loves the child. 2 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and obey his commandments. 3 For the love of God is this, that we obey his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome, 4 for whatever is born of God conquers the world. And this is the victory that conquers the world, our faith. 5 Who 6 is it that conquers the world but the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God? This is the one who came by water and blood, Jesus Christ, not with the water only but with the water and the blood. And the Spirit is the one that testifies, for the Spirit is the truth.
