About This Title Copying the Hymns is a series of copywork books focused on developing Christian devotion through reflection upon the great hymns of the faith, and related scriptures. Available in a wide range of penmanship styles and progressive levels, each book draws from classic hymns of the faith and scripture to develop a strong spiritual foundation while practicing printing and handwriting skills. HWT 1-A uses All Things Bright and Beautiful written by Cecil F. Alexander in 1848 as its hymn selection. Alexander wrote the lyrics in Ireland, as part of Hymns for Little Children, and this well-loved song has been set to a variety of tunes since that time. Our HWT 1-A titles features standard Hand Without Tears manuscript style two-line spacing with 5/16 between the lines and line-by-line copywork models. This level is appropriate for beginners who have learned to form their letters (mastery is not required), and are working with larger letters. One sentence, line, or verse is generally presented per lesson. No models for tracing are in keeping with Handwriting Without Tears instructional methods. HWT 1-A About This Title 5
How to Use This Book This copywork book is a stand-alone title and includes the entire hymn All Things Bright and Beautiful. This enduring hymn has long been a favorite of children, and encourages joyful celebration of God s role as sovereign creator over this world. Copywork lesson 1 is an opening scripture verse that reveals God s creation of the heaven and earth. Lesson 15 provides a closing scripture verse that shares God s pleasure in His new creation at the end of His six days of labor. These two Bible verses serve as bookends to the copywork lessons (2 14) that include the full lyrics of All Things Bright and Beautiful. They make excellent topical memory verses that can be committed to memory during the course of the book. Quick reference charts with numbers and arrows are provided for upper case, lower case, and numerals for children to use as they work on their lessons. Simply print these out and have them available for children to glance at as needed to refresh their memories. The title page (page 11) can be used as a notebook cover for the copywork lessons. Decorative illustrations are included and may be colored if desired. Space for free-form drawings is also provided to encourage creativity, these HWT 1-A How to Use This Book 6
appear as empty frames throughout the book. Blank template pages for additional writing and drawing space are provided in the appendix. If your children are in the pre and early reading stages, read through each lesson with them before asking them to copy it. When their work is completed, read their printed words, following along with your finger once their lesson is finished. To glean the most devotional benefit from this copywork study, reading the opening and closing Bible verses in their larger context (verses prior to and following the selected passage) is incredibly rewarding. Verbally prompt your children to draw connections between the Bible verses shared, and this well-known hymn, as well as the underlying doctrinal truths that are woven into the hymn s themes. These discussions are invaluable and will help to form connections between scriptural truths and favorite hymns. Singing the hymn, or listening to a recording of it, before, after, and during the copywork lessons will add additional depth to the study. HWT 1-A How to Use This Book 7
