St. Hilary of Poitiers Parish December 31, 2017 The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary & Joseph Deacon s Corner The Feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph. As parents we all think of our children as special. It is especially nice to hear comments from others in regards to our children, whether that be about their talents, their looks and it is especially nice to hear comments in regards to their behavior. Mary and Joseph had chosen to keep sacred the laws and traditions of their religion so they took Jesus to the temple in Jerusalem. This special time is often referred to as The Presentation. Upon their arrival they met Simeon who took Jesus into his arms and said: Now Master, you may let your servant go/in peace. Simeon had immediately recognize that his eyes had seen the Son of God in Jesus. God had promised Simeon that he would not see death until he had seen the Messiah. So Simeon could now go to our Lord. Jesus was indeed the most special child to have ever been born into this world. Today we celebrate the feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph. Family life is at the heart of faith life for so many of us, including Jesus himself. It is the family where we first experience unconditional love. This experience becomes one image or model upon which we image God s love for us. For this reason, but not only for this reason, the experience of family is sacred. Having just shared our Holidays with family and friends should help remind us how much God loves each and everyone of us. Keeping in mind that He sent His only Son into the world to teach us how to love one another as He loves us. Family is anyone and everyone we open our hearts to our love. It is by the example of the Holy Family that we learn the importance of loving and caring for one another. Have a blessed 2018 Deacon John Page 2/ December 31, 2017 Sunday, December 31, 2017 The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary & Jospeh 5:00pm (Sat.) This instruction should help to maintain and recognize the human body as a living temple of Gods presence. Proper respect for the deceased and their remains must always be upheld. Copies on the guidelines are available at the rectory DO YOU KNOW YOUR TRIBUNAL? The Tribunal is available to help people who have experience and who may wish to remarry in the Catholic Church. When a divorce occurs, the Catholic Church always seeks to balance two realities. One on the durable bond of marriage. This is God s law. On the other hand, the Church is concerned about the spiritual welfare of the people involved. Even though a Catholic marriage was celebrated, perhaps there was some deficiency in the consent of the parties involved regarding intentions, understanding or ability? The annulment procedure addresses these circumstances. If you are divorced and want to marry in the Church or remarried outside the Catholic Church, please telephone the Tribunal Office at 222 North l7th Street, Philadelphia, PA 19103 (215) 587.3750 Page 3/ December 31, 2017 Billy Brazukas Shirley Callahan Maureen Barrett Roy & Carol Stein The Ferry Family Mike Schell Mike Schell Jim Brady Danielle Lattanzi Valentino Family Brenner Family The Ferry Family George Naab A Special Thank You to all those who came to help decorate our beautiful Church. Perfectly YOU DISCOVERING GOD S DREAM FOR YOU The Pastoral visit of Pope Francis has made us all proud of our Catholic faith. He spoke with authority about the truths of God and the beauty of human life. He is calling us to re-discover the treasure of our Catholic faith, to stand up for it, defend it and celebrate it. FOR DECADES WE HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT WE LIVE IN a consumer society. At this point I doubt many would argue with the assertion, but I do have some questions. Are we still consumers, or are we being consumed? Have we lost something of ourselves to this unbridled consumerism? Can we get it back? God s dream for you and me go so far beyond what the world has to offer. He made each and every single one of us wonderfully unique, and he dreams that we will chase, embrace, and celebrate all he created us to be: the-very-best-vison-of-ourselves. Though we take pride in our individualism and independence, we seem particularly enamored of fitting in. To a certain extent, the desire to fit in and be accepted is natural and normal. But when it comes at the cost of losing sight of who we are marvelously unique individuals, something is amiss Let us seek to discover once more what it means to be perfectly ourselves. Matthew Kelly, NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLING AUTHOR Pick up your special gift this Christmas. May we pray and support each other on our quest to become the best version of ourselves. God bless you and your families, Father Murray The Gift of Prayer Thank you for your generous response to our Annual Census and Block Collection. Your Census information helps update our files and adapt our programs to meet your needs. Your financial support is a tremendous help in maintaining our buildings and our mission to carry out the work of the Lord. Total this year was $36,991.00 Total last year was $34,820.00 When the trials of this life make you weary, And your troubles seem too much to bear, There s a wonderful solace and comfort, In the silent Communion of Prayer. When you have searched For the sun without ceasing, And the showers continue to fall, There s a Heavenly lift in this Wonderful Gift That God has extended to all, From the Gift of prayer there comes power That will minimize all you care, And you ll gather new hope, When you re able to cope, With the troubles that once brought you despair. Again my thanks for your support and sacrifices. Father Murray Page 4 December 31,2017 160 St. Hilary of Poitiers

. The Sacrament of Marriage The matrimonial covenant, by which a man and a women established between themselves a partnership of the whole of life, is by its nature ordered toward the good of the spouses and the procreation and education of offspring; this covenant between baptized persons has been raised by Christ the Lord to the dignity of a sacrament. (Catechism of the Catholic Church pg.400) Remain In My Love John 15:9 This is a three year program now underway in the Archdiocese. It s purpose is to help strengthen and reinvigorate marriage and family life. The program will begin for Parish Staff and Schools this January 2018. In 2019 it will be directed to married couples and families. Archbishop Chaput writes that this initiative is an opportunity to rediscover the beauty of Christs teaching on marriage and family life. The goal is to generate a practical plan for a future to more effectively support married couples. In light of this program we encourage our married couples to renew their prayer life and take a more active role in receiving the grace of Holy Communion the source of all love. We offer to assist any married couple not married validly in the Church in a civil marriage and work to return to receiving Holy Communion, Please call Fr. Murray so we can begin this healing process. Page 5 December 31, 2017 160 St. Hilary of Poitiers Parish
