Christ Church Children s Sunday School BENCHMARKS When Jesus was asked to identify the most important commandment in the entire Bible, He answered by quoting a portion of Deuteronomy Chapter 6, Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. His Jewish audience would have known the remaining portion of this verse: These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up (Deut. 6: 4-7, NIV). The initial act of obedience that results from the love of God is the instruction of children impressing God s Word on their hearts. Christ Church Children s Ministry is committed to the work of impressing God s Word on the heart of children. To ensure this takes place, the following Benchmarks were identified. Each quarter, the 4 children s Sunday School classes will commit an assigned Benchmark to memory. Near the end of each quarter, the children will present these to the parish during the 10:30 service! We encourage parents to practice these Benchmarks with their children; when you sit at home, when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Children who can recite a Benchmark by heart will receive a special pin to wear on their nametags. Most portions of Scripture are taken from the New International Version (NIV).

2-4 Years Old Psalm 100 Autumn verses 1-3 Winter verses 4-5 1 Shout for joy to the LORD, all the earth. 2 Worship the LORD with gladness; come before him with joyful songs. 3 Know that the LORD is God. It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, the sheep of his pasture. 4 Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name. 5 For the LORD is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations. From Mark 12:28-31 (The Greatest Commandment) Spring Teacher: What did Jesus say is the most important commandment? Children: 1. To love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength and 2. To love your neighbor as yourself.

Pre-K-Kindergarten The Word Became Flesh John 1:1-3 Autumn verses 1-3 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. The Armor of God from Ephesians 6 Winter-Spring 10 Finally, be strong in the Lord 11 Put on the full armor of God 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the spiritual forces of evil 14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and the gospel of peace 16 Take up the shield of faith,... 17 the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

1 st -2 nd Grade The Ten Commandments taken from Exodus 20:1-17 Autumn Introduction and commandments 1-4 (on loving God) Winter Commandments 5-10 (on loving others) And God spoke all these words, saying: I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. 1. You shall have no other gods before Me. 2. You shall not make for yourself a carved image. 3. You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain. 4. Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. 5. Honor your father and your mother. 6. You shall not murder. 7. You shall not commit adultery. 8. You shall not steal. 9. 3 rd -5 th Grade The Apostles Creed Autumn-Winter I believe in God, the Father Almighty, the Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord: Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hell. The third day He arose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

Comfortable Words 1662 Book of Common Prayer in Modern English Spring Teacher/Celebrant: Hear the words of assurance addressed by our Lord Jesus Christ to those who truly turn to him: Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. (Matthew 11:28) God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. (John 3:16) Teacher/Celebrant: Hear also what St. Paul said: The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners. (1Timothy 1:15) Teacher/Celebrant: And hear what St. John said: If anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world. (1 John 2:1)
