Introduction COLOSSAE Colossae was a small town in the Lycus River Valley, near by Hierapolis and Laodicea. At the time of Paul, it was a part of the Roman province of Asia, in modern day Turkey. Colossae was the oldest of its neighboring cities and was at one time known as a great city. The Lycus Valley provided rich land for raising sheep and mineral deposits for dyeing wool, and so a clothing industry sprang up. However, by the time of Paul Colossae had faded into obscurity. Laodicea was a production center for wool, while Hierapolis was known as a spa town. At least two generations before Paul wrote this letter Colossae was a shadow of its former self. A major road, The Via Sebaste, which once ran through Colossae was rerouted and Colossae was relegated as a small village. bakerpublishinggroup.com Christ is Everything 2 Redemption Lutheran Church

AUTHOR The Apostle Paul This is only one of two letters (the other is Romans) which Paul wrote to congregations that he did not start. The congregation in Colossae was most likely founded by a native of Colosse, Epaphras (1:8; 4:23,13). Most likely the congregation was founded during Paul s three year stay in Ephesus (Acts 19:1,8-10), which is the capital of the same province as Colossae. DAte Colossians was written while Paul was in prison (4:3). There are three places from which Paul could have written to the Colossians: 1. Caesarea: Philemon was written at the same time as Colossians and a runaway slave would probably not gone to Caesarea. Paul makes no mention of Philip the Evangelist (Acts 21:8), with whom Paul stayed while in Caesarea. In Caesarea, Paul had likely little hope of release (Philemon 22). 2. Ephesus: In the book of Acts there is no mention of an Ephesian imprisonment. Luke is with Paul (4:14), but was not with him in Ephesus. And since Philemon was written at the same time, would a run away slave have stopped so close to home? 3. Rome: since what Paul mentions fits well with this imprisonment (Luke s presence, relative freedom, hope of release), Rome seems like the best choice. Assuming Colossians was written during his Roman imprisonment the date around which Paul would have written this letter is 62 A.D. PURPOSE The gospel was bearing fruit among the Christians in Colossae as manifested by their faith and love (1:3-7). However, a false teaching rose up in Colossae which seems to be a blend of Jewish, pagan, and Christian thoughts. Throughout the book we see this to be the case not so much by what Paul attacks but by what he affirms to be the truth. Jewish Thoughts Emphasis on the need to be circumcised and observe dietary laws and holy days (2:11-14,16,17). Christ is Everything 3 Redemption Lutheran Church

Pagan Thoughts An initial stage of Gnosticism Salvation is by knowledge, not faith. This knowledge is available only to those who are initiated into the gnostic thought system (1:28; 2:3). Matter is evil, spirit alone is good. Which affected: the doctrine of creation: aeons, emanations, and angel worship (1:16; 2:9,15,18) the doctrine of the person of Jesus: denial of his deity (1:19; 2:9) a person s approach to life: either asceticism (2:20-23) or libertinism (3:5ff) Christian Thoughts Christian terminology was used but with different meanings (2:8). The result: the dethroning of Christ and therefore a denial of him. OUTLINE I. Greeting and thanksgiving 1:1-14 II. Jesus is sufficient for our faith 1:15-2:23 III. Jesus is sufficient for our Christian lives 3:1-4:6 IV. Final greetings and conclusion 4:7-18 The book of Colossians is very similar to the book of Ephesians. One scholar remarked that three fifths of Colossians is reflected in Ephesians. Ephesians is an expansion of thought presented in a more compact form in Colossians. However, there is a difference in emphasis between the two books. Ephesians shows that the Church is the body of Christ whereas Colossians shows that Christ is the head. Source: Panning, Armin J. CHAPTER 1 Read 1:1-2 1:1 Dissect the opening verse. What important facts are we able to learn? 1:2 In what way were the people in Colosse holy? What can we do to remember that God sees us as holy and faithful? Read 1:3-14 1:3 If Jesus is our Savior and God is his Father then how do those two facts impact those who believe? 1:4-5 What does love for others flow out of? Why is the hope of heaven not merely a hopeful wish? 1:6 What made the message which the Colossians heard different from other messages? Christ is Everything 5 Redemption Lutheran Church

1:7-8 What does the Colossian congregation seem to be known for? 1:9 What kind of knowledge is Paul praying for here? 1:10-12 What are the marks of a God pleasing life? 1:13 Where does the ability to live a God pleasing life come from? 1:14 What is all involved in Jesus act of redemption? Faith, hope, and love is a triad. How do we grow in each of these? Read 1:15-23 In the first five verses of this section, we have another of those sublime passages of the New Testament that seem to jump right off the printed page. It s a literary gem, an inspired, hymn like confession of the supremacy and greatness of Christ Because Paul here describes in human terms the greatness of Christ, which passes human understanding, we may have trouble grasping the full meaning of what the Holy Spirit is telling us through the apostle. This is one of those sections of scripture that must be read, digested, and read again. But that is something that we will do willingly, because the apostle provides us here with a magnificent testimony to the person and the work of our Lord Jesus. Harlyn Kuschel, Philippians & Colossians Christ is Everything 6 Redemption Lutheran Church

1:15 Image means more than just a likeness. Jesus is the the very expression and personification of God himself. Since Jesus is God which attributes of God are also true of Jesus? 1:16 Jesus, as divine Word, was the one who caused everything to come into being. God spoke and there was. How does knowing this slightly change your understanding of Jesus? 1:17 Whose power is responsible for all things in this world and universe holding together? 1:18 Describe the relationship between head and body. What does this mean for the Church? For you? 1:19 The fulness of God grace and mercy rest in Christ. What blessings are there in that fact? 1:20 What has Jesus done to reconcile all things to God? 1:21 What specifically did Jesus need to reconcile? Christ is Everything 7 Redemption Lutheran Church

1:22 Think back to 1:2, how is Paul able to say that Christians are holy and faithful? 1:23 In what way can you summarize the gospel? In what ways have you seen the supremacy of Christ, especially when it comes to your salvation? Read 1:24-29 1:24 Why would Paul rejoice in his imprisonment? And I fill up in my flesh what is still lacking in regard to Christ s afflictions. Paul was not saying that his afflictions added to Christ s work of salvation. On the cross Jesus declared his work to be finished. But when Paul suffered he better understood Christ s afflictions and took it to the world. Suffering is a way of life that comes with following Jesus. Paul is not the only one who suffers for the name of Jesus. The enemies of Christ continually look to attack the Church, the followers of Christ, and when they attack the Church Jesus afflictions are added to. However, It is up to the Church to finish Paul s work. Christ s work is done but the work of gospel proclamation is not. Christ is Everything 8 Redemption Lutheran Church

1:25 What is Paul s one job? 1:26-27 What does this show us about the gospel message? 1:28-29 Why is proclaiming the gospel so important to Paul? What can you do to gain strength and courage to be a gospel proclaimer? Christ is Everything 9 Redemption Lutheran Church

CHAPTER 3 Paul has concluded the doctrinal portion of his letter in which he outlined Christ s supremacy. Now Paul will begin to speak about how Christ is all-sufficient not just for a Christian s faith but also for a Christian s life. There is a strong connection between what Christians believe and how they live. Note how Paul calls on believers to adopt a mindset which focuses on Christ and then how he contests our old way of life and the new way of life which we are to put on. Read 3:1-11 3:1 What are two reasons why we should set our hearts on things above? 3:2 What are the things above that Paul speaks of? 3:3 In what way have you died? Again the word hide can mean hide in a safe place. How does that affect your understanding of this verse? 3:4 How does this verse tie in with 1:5? 3:5 v. 5-11 are dominated by two commands: put to death (v. 5) and rid yourselves of (v. 8). What makes you uncomfortable with calling sin idolatry? How is Paul correct in calling it idolatry? Christ is Everything 10 Redemption Lutheran Church

3:6 How does this reminder reinforce Paul s command in v.5? 3:7 Notice the contrast between your old way of life and the life you now have in Christ. What does the life you live now look like? 3:8 In what ways is the list of sins here different from the list in v. 5? 3:9-10 By the grace of God, what is happening in your Christian walk? 3:11 Worldly differences are nothing compared to the unity which Christ brings. Christ is the center of both creation and redemption. All things hold together in him. But even though he holds such power he dwells in the hearts of all his people. As you consider your Christian life, what were some reminders which resonated with you? Christ is Everything 10 Redemption Lutheran Church

Read 3:12-17 3:12 Contrast these five virtues with the sins Paul listed previously? In what way are these virtues a part of setting our minds on things above? 3:13 When dealing with other people what distracts you from the forgiveness God has given you? 3:14 Why is love necessary for all the other virtues which Paul mentions? 3:15 What is the decisive factor in your earthly relationships? 3:16 What things prevent you from letting the Word take up permanent residency in your life? 3:17 Why is Jesus Lordship over us so important to our Christian lives? Christ is Everything 11 Redemption Lutheran Church

What are some ways you can work on placing your mind and life on things above? Which of the virtues do you struggle most with? What is the only thing that can empower you to put your mind on things above? Read 3:18-25 3:18-25 What does your heart reject in each of these verses? How does Christ s Lordship apply to each of these verses? How can you set your mind on things above even in your private life? Christ is Everything 12 Redemption Lutheran Church

CHAPTER 2 The opening of chapter 2 flows off of the line of thought in 1:24-29. Paul continues to talk about his ministry, however there is a slight shift of thought in that he focuses more the significance of his ministry for the Colossians and the false teaching they are facing. Read 2:1-5 2:1 Remember that Paul never met the Christians in Colossae or Laodicea. Why is Paul so willing to struggle for people which he never met? 2:2 What is the mystery Paul is speaking about? (Cf. 1:27) 2:3 The word hidden, here, doesn t necessarily mean undisclosed, rather the idea is that of a treasure which has been hidden because of its great value. Paul s point is that there is knowledge and wisdom of great value that is available in Christ for the Christian so that he can understand spiritual truths and lead a God pleasing life. 2:4 What is a practical purpose of this knowledge and wisdom which is found in Christ? 2:5 What gives Paul the right to issue warnings to a group of people which he has never met? What is the difference between wisdom and knowledge? What is some of the wisdom and knowledge you have gained in Christ? Christ is Everything 10 Redemption Lutheran Church

Read 2:6-15 2:6 If Christ is Lord, what does that mean for a person who is under his Lordship? (Cf. 1:15-20) 2:7 What kind of life characterizes believers? 2:8 What are some of the hollow and deceptive philosophies which depends on human tradition and the basic principles of this world which you face today? 2:9 If all knowledge and wisdom rests in Christ, why is this such an important statement? 2:10 Christians need to look nowhere else than to Christ for what we need to know about God. Everything that we can know or experience about God is found in Christ. 2:11 Paul now begins to explain the fulness which Christians have in Christ. How is Christ s supremacy evident in this verse? 2:12 Describe the deepness of your relationship to Christ. Christ is Everything 11 Redemption Lutheran Church

2:13 Contrast your old way of life with your life in Christ now. 2:14 Paul draws a picture of human beings who have signed an IOU of complete allegiance to God. However, our sins demonstrate that we have failed to pay that IOU. We stand indebted to God. But God forgave our debt and even destroyed it by nailing it to Christ s cross. 2:15 How do we know that our forgiveness is real? In what ways have you seen the fullness of your spiritual life to actually be found in Christ? How have you seen that Paul is not just paying lip service to some lofty idea, but that Christ s supremacy does actually impact you daily? Read 2:16-23 2:16-17 In what way has a new era dawned with the coming of Christ? 2:18 What two things does Paul warn the Colossians against? Christ is Everything 12 Redemption Lutheran Church

2:19 Explain the picture which Paul is using. Who is the body? What is the source of spiritual growth? 2:20-21 What is one effect of our dying with Christ? 2:22-23 What are three points Paul makes concerning false teaching? What is the essence of Christian spirituality? Christ is Everything 13 Redemption Lutheran Church

CHAPTER 3 Paul has concluded the doctrinal portion of his letter in which he outlined Christ s supremacy. Now Paul will begin to speak about how Christ is all-sufficient not just for a Christian s faith but also for a Christian s life. How does that affect your understanding of this verse? 3:4 How does this verse tie in with 1:5? 3:5 v. 5-11 are dominated by two commands: put to death (v. 5) and rid yourselves of (v. 8).
