INSIDE CONSTRUCTION As part of the construction of our new office space, some work will have to be done in the parish hall regarding the water and sewer connection. The dates for this construction will be Monday, October 12, to Friday, October 16. We apologize for this inconvenience but after a conversation with our contractor it was decided this was the least disruptive option to get the work done in a timely manner. If you absolutely need to come by the office during the week of construction we ask that you please phone ahead and use caution when entering and exiting the building as the construction will be taking place right at the main entrance. NEW PARISH WEBSITE In other good news, after many long hours and lots of technical setbacks we are pleased to announce that our new website is up and running. Please visit the new site at www.stmarksanglican.ca. We would love to hear from you on what you think of the new site. Any comments or feedback can be sent to st.marks@nf.aibn.com. Thanks to Stephen Mercer for all the work that he did for us to get the site up and running. A.C.W. DESSERT AND CARD PARTY DATE CHANGE! Those interested are asked to register through the parish office by October 20 th in order for sufficient participant materials to be prepared.

FALL FAIR - CHRISTMAS CAKE STALL Last year the Christmas Cake Stall at our Fall Fair was a great success! Please consider donating a cake again this year. Even though the most popular cakes were the dark fruit, cherry, carrot, diabetic fruit, Christmas Plum Puddings, the light fruit and apricot cakes were in demand as well. Please name your cake. Should you have any questions call Betty at 576-2525.

SYRIAN REFUGEES I am sure that your attention, like mine and most of the rest of the world over the past few weeks, has been drawn to the plight of the people of Syria. The refugee crisis currently ravaging the people of Syria is enormous in scale with millions of people displaced from their homes and fleeing their country. I have already shared some information with the parish on how we can respond but still the questions remains What can St. Mark s do? Our Primate and our Bishop are calling on Anglican faith communities to discern what we can do to help the people of Syria. Already, because of our relationship with the Association for New Canadians, we have been receiving phone calls from parishes from around the diocese, as well as parishes from Central Diocese, looking for guidance on how to respond. Father Mark has already attended a presentation by the ANC on how groups can become a refugee sponsor and he has also been drafted by the Bishop to be on a Diocesan Refugee Committee. Father Mark and I have talked to our wardens, Rosalind and Kim, and our vestry as well. With their permission we began a time of conversation and discernment to gauge the support within the parish for the sponsorship of a Syrian refugee family. That conversation began on Sunday. We felt Sunday would be an ideal time to discuss this as a parish as we gathered together for our Fall Gathering. There are two aspects of support we need to discern: (1) We would need to know how much parishioners are willing to financially pledge to a parish sponsorship fund; and (2) We would need to know how many parishioners would be willing to commit to offering of themselves to walk with, and provide logistical support, for a refugee family. In order to sponsor a refugee family we would need to raise approximately $20,000 and identify at least six parishioners who would be willing to provide that social support for a period of one year.

St. Mark s has experience not only with the ANC, but also in journeying with families from Sierra Leone, Sudan, Ethiopia and China as they settle into new lives here in Canada. While this is a deeper commitment with more expectations, we feel that we are more than capable of fulfilling the requirements of a sponsorship agreement. St. Mark s has a history of responding generously to these types of crises. Also there may be an opportunity to partner with other parishes from more rural areas that would not be able to sponsor a family but may want to contribute financially or materially to another parishes sponsorship. Please give this your honest and prayerful consideration. We ask that you contact the office to indicate what you would be willing to pledge financially to a potential sponsorship so we can determine the viability of proceeding. Also we ask for those who are willing to provide logistical support for a refugee family to contact the office as well. Father Mark and I are available to answer any questions you might have.
