Castello 419-592-0847 jameslcastello@ yahoo.com Eighteenth Sunday after Pentecost September 22, 2013 * GREETING P Sisters and brothers in Christ, beloved children of God: grace, mercy, and peace be with you all. C And also with you. * KYRIE (8:00 ONLY) Empowered by the Holy Spirit, Emanuel s mission is to witness to the good news of salvation through Christ to individuals, the community and the world through discipleship and service. LBW Lutheran Book of Worship WOV With One Voice * Please stand if you are able PRELUDE............................... O Savior Sweet, O Savior Kind (Bach) ANNOUNCEMENTS * CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS P Blessed be the holy Trinity, one God: the only Sovereign, who dwells in light; Christ Jesus, who came to save sinners; the Holy Spirit, who lives within us.. P Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another. God of overflowing grace, C we come to you with repentant hearts. Forgive us for shallow thankfulness. Forgive us for passing by the ones in need. Forgive us for setting our hopes on fleeting treasures. Forgive us our neglect and thoughtlessness. Bring us home from the wilderness of sin, and strengthen us to serve you in all that we do and say; through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. P There is joy in heaven over every sinner who repents. By the grace of God in Christ Jesus, who gave himself up for us all, your sins are forgiven and you are made free. Rejoice with the angels and with one another! We are home in God's mercy, now and forever. * HYMN.................... Be Thou My Vision.................. WOV # 776 2

*HYMN OF PRAISE (8:00 ONLY) * SALUTATION (8:00 ONLY) * PRAYER OF THE DAY P Lord God, you call us to work in your vineyard and leave no one standing idle. Set us to our tasks in the work of your kingdom, and help us to order our lives by your wisdom; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. (8:00) When Love Is Found -Terry Hershberger FIRST READING: Amos 8:4 7 4Hear this, you that trample on the needy, and bring to ruin the poor of the land, 5saying, "When will the new moon be over so that we may sell grain; and the sabbath, so that we may offer wheat for sale? We will make the ephah small and the shekel great, and practice deceit with false balances, 6buying the poor for silver and the needy for a pair of sandals, and selling the sweepings of the wheat." 7The LORD has sworn by the pride of Jacob: Surely I will never forget any of their deeds. A C The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. PSALM 113 Hallelujah! Give praise, you servants of the LORD;* praise the name of the LORD. 2 Let the name of the LORD be blessed,* from this time forth for- evermore. 3 From the rising of the sun to its going down* let the name of the LORD be praised. 4 The LORD is high a- bove all nations,* and his glory a- bove the heavens. 3 4

5 Who is like the LORD our God, who sits en- throned on high,* but stoops to behold the heavens and the earth? 6 He takes up the weak out of the dust* and lifts up the poor from the ashes. 7 He sets them with the princes,* with the princes of his people. 8 He makes the woman of a childless house* to be a joyful moth- er of children. SECOND READING: 1 Timothy 2:1 7 First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings 2 be made for everyone, for kings and all who are in high positions, so that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all 3 godliness and dignity. This is right and is acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, 4who desires everyone to be saved and to 5 come to the knowledge of the truth. For there is one God; there is also one mediator between God and humankind, Christ Jesus, himself human, 6who gave himself a ransom for all 7 this was attested at the right time. For this I was appointed a herald and an apostle (I am telling the truth, I am not lying), a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth. A The Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. Then Jesus said to the disciples, "There was a rich man who had a manager, and charges were brought to him that this man 2 was squandering his property. So he summoned him and said to him, 'What is this that I hear about you? Give me an accounting of your management, because you cannot be my manager any longer.' 3Then the manager said to himself, 'What will I do, now that my master is taking the position away from me? I am not strong enough to dig, and I am ashamed to beg. 4 I have decided what to do so that, when I am dismissed as manager, people may 5 welcome me into their homes.' So, summoning his master's debtors one by one, he asked the first, 'How much do you 6 owe my master?' He answered, 'A hundred jugs of olive oil.' He said to him, 'Take your bill, sit down quickly, and 7 make it fifty.' Then he asked another, 'And how much do you owe?' He replied, 'A hundred containers of wheat.' He said to him, 'Take your bill and make it eighty.' 8And his master commended the dishonest manager because he had acted shrewdly; for the children of this age are more shrewd in dealing with their own generation than are the children of light. 9And I tell you, make friends for yourselves by means of dishonest wealth so that when it is gone, they may welcome you into the eternal homes. 10Whoever is faithful in a very little is faithful also in much; and whoever is dishonest in a very little is dishonest also 11 in much. If then you have not been faithful with the dishonest wealth, who 12 will entrust to you the true riches? And if you have not been faithful with what belongs to another, who will give you 13 what is your own? No slave can serve two masters; for a slave will either hate the one and love the other, or be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth." * GOSPEL: Luke 16:1 13 CHILDREN S SERMON (10:30 service continues on page 9) 5 6

LBW # 383 POSTLUDE A Joyful Trumpet Special Music: I Wonder -Peggy Snyder 10:30 a.m. Service BAPTISM OF AUDREY KATE SCHROEDER PRESENTATION P In Holy Baptism our gracious heavenly Father liberates us from sin and death by joining us to the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. We are born children of a fallen humanity; in the waters of Baptism we are reborn children of God and inheritors of eternal life. By water and the Holy Spirit we are made members of the Church which is the body of Christ. As we live with him and with his people, we grow in faith, love, and obedience to the will of God. Parents and Sponsors: I present Audrey Kate Schroeder to receive the Sacrament of Holy Baptism. P In Christian love you have presented this child for Holy Baptism. You should, therefore, faithfully bring her to the services of God's house, and teach her the Lord's Prayer, the Creed, and the Ten Commandments. As she grows in years, you should place in her hands the Holy Scriptures and provide for her instruction in the Christian faith, that, living in the covenant of her Baptism and in communion with the Church, she may lead a godly life until the day of Jesus Christ. Do you promise to fulfill these obligations? Parents and Sponsors: I do. THANKSGIVING P The Lord be with you. C And also with you. P Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. C It is right to give him thanks and praise. P Holy God, mighty Lord, gracious Father: We give you thanks, for in the beginning your Spirit moved over the waters and you created heaven and earth. By the gift of water you nourish and sustain us and all living things. By the waters of the flood you condemned the wicked and saved those whom you had chosen, Noah and his family. You led Israel by the pillar of cloud and fire through the sea, out of slavery into the freedom of the promised land. In the waters of the Jordan your Son was baptized by John and anointed with the Spirit. By the baptism of his own death and resurrection your beloved Son has set us free from the bondage to sin and death, and has opened the way to the joy and freedom of everlasting life. He made water a sign of the kingdom and of cleansing and rebirth. In obedience to his command, we make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Pour out your Holy Spirit, so that she who is here baptized may be given new life. Wash away the sin of her who is cleansed by this water and bring her forth as an inheritor of your glorious kingdom. To you be given praise and honor and worship through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, now and forever. RENUNCIATION AND PROFESSION P I ask you to profess your faith in Christ Jesus, reject sin, and confess the faith of the Church, the faith in which we baptize. P Do you renounce all the forces of evil, the devil, and all his empty promises? Parents and Sponsors: I do. 9 10

P Do you believe in God the Father? C I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. P Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God? C I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. C I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen BAPTISM P Audrey Kate Schroeder, I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen LAYING ON OF HANDS P God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, we give you thanks for freeing your sons and daughters from the power of sin and for raising them up to a new life through this holy sacrament. Pour your Holy Spirit upon Audrey: the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord, the spirit of joy in your presence. SIGNING WITH THE CROSS P Audrey, child of God, you have been sealed by the Holy Spirit and marked with the cross of Christ forever. Amen PRAYER FOR PARENTS P O God, the giver of all life, look with kindness upon Tom and Cheryl. Let them ever rejoice in the gift you have given them. Make them teachers and examples of righteousness for their child. Strengthen them in their own Baptism so they may share eternally with their child the salvation you have given them, through Jesus Christ our Lord. WELCOME A Through Baptism God has made this new sister a member of the priesthood we all share in Christ Jesus, that we may proclaim the praise of God and bear his creative and redeeming Word to all the world. C We welcome you into the Lord's family. We receive you as a fellow member of the body of Christ, child of the same heavenly Father, and worker with us in the kingdom of God. Caring Corner It s time for Lutheran World Relief Kits. (From Lutheran World Relief...) Pens and pencils, a toothbrush, a quilt...ordinary items we take for granted become treasures in the hands of their recipients. The items you send will be cherished and used by people who take nothing for granted, for whom even a simple bar of new soap is special. Your gifts of time and resources toward making LWR Quilts and Kits are beautiful expressions of God s love and grace to those in greatest need. Thank you for your partnership in putting them together. There are several ways you can be a part of this great ministry. On the Caring Corner table there are instructions on the different kits (Personal Care, Baby, Fabric, School). There are empty School Kit Bags already made so all you have to do is fill it. If you don t sew or cannot be a part of a kit-making project, please consider donating to the Women of the Church to be donated to LWR Quilt and Kit Shipping Fund. For every $1 you give someone in need receives $8 worth of essential personal items. The kits must be turned in to the Caring Corner Table, and monetary donations just be made by September 29, 2013.
