call to worship The Scriptural call to worship at the beginning of our service reminds us of the centrality of God s Word. God reveals Himself to us through His Word and invites us to respond corporately to Him in worship. Oh come, let us sing to the Lord; let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation! Let us come into His presence with thanksgiving; let us make a joyful noise to Him with songs of praise. Psalm 95:1-2 corporate confession In light of God s holiness, wrath, and grace, we acknowledge that we have all sinned against God and are in need of His sanctifying grace. This confession occurs in the context of a covenant relationship made possible through the perfect life, substitutionary death, and victorious resurrection of Jesus. As Christians, our confession is not so that God should forgive us, but because, through Christ, He has already forgiven us. For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified by His grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus. Romans 3:23-24 offering Giving is an act of worship in which the members of Hickory Grove give generously of our substance to further the mission of the church and to bring glory to God. 3

practical theology series: the Gospel of god (Part 2) After Jesus resurrection, Luke records the story of Jesus walking to a village named Emmaus with two people. We are told that beginning with Moses and all the prophets, Jesus interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself (Luke 24:27). Perhaps the conversation went something like this The Gospel in the Old Testament is in: 1. THE PLOT The Old Testament introduces God as the main character, the protagonist in the drama. He created mankind in his image and for his glory, but sin and death invaded the garden through the serpent. The story turns into a tragedy as sin collides with God s good world, resulting in the first couple being banished from the garden. However, within the narrative is an announcement of great evangelistic hope. The offspring of the woman will crush the offspring of the serpent so that the people of God can return to living in the presence of God.1 The rest of the Old Testament develops these two themes: The offspring of the woman and the presence of God. 2. THE PATTERNS Theologians call these types. Here are two: a. The Temple The Temple symbolized God s presence with his people. Even the garden of Eden is presented in temple language. Later, this theme develops so that the temple is the place where sacrifices take place. The Old Testament ends with the temple being destroyed and rebuilt, not unlike the death and resurrection of Jesus, the true temple of God, who will be destroyed and raised/rebuilt in three days (John 2:19). 4

b. The Sacrifices God established animal sacrifices to communicate three gospel truths: 1. Sin deserves death (Lev 16:15) The death of the bull, goat, or lamb was a powerful reminder of how seriously God takes sin. 2. Guilt can be transferred (Lev 16:21) The Priest laying his hands on the head of the goat and confessing the sins of the people over it is a clear foreshadowing of the ultimate Lamb of God who will bear our sins. 3. God will provide the sacrifice (Lev 17:11) God promises to provide the remedy to our guilt problem. This is a clear reminder that salvation is a gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast (Eph 2:8-9) 3. THE PROPHETS The prophets interpret Israel s past to predict their future. They speak about a future Exodus (Jer 16:14-15), a future David (Eze 37:24), a future sacrifice (Isa 53:6-7), and a future King (Micah 5:2) who will come. In light of this announcement, they call people to repentance and faith. Believers today will be encouraged and strengthened as they read the Old Testament with gospel eyes. 1 Stephen G. Dempster, Dominion and Dynasty: A Biblical Theology of the Hebrew Bible (Leicester, England : Downers Grove, Ill: IVP Academic, 2003) He suggests the twin themes dominion and dynasty which refer to land and offspring. 5

The Scripture memory passages are: For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, The righteous shall live by faith. Romans 1:16 17 For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened.
