All Things Presbyterian Do you know Lenten history? According to Jennifer Lord, a professor in homiletics and liturgical studies at Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary, the time of Lent came into being after Easter was decided upon as an annual celebration and that, early on, the Christians celebrated Easter, celebrated resurrection weekly. The Council of Nicea, in 325, set Easter as an annual celebration tied to the timing of Passover, a link to the Jewish tradition of following the lunar calendar. Easter is set for the first Sunday that occurs after the first full moon after the spring equinox. Lord says that the development of Lent was to prepare people to be baptized on Easter. At that time, baptism was for adults, and Lent became 40 days of baptismal preparation, counting the days from Ash Wednesday to Easter, except for the Sundays in Lent, because Sunday is always resurrection liturgically, Lord says. In the Christian tradition, the number 40 is significant, being this great number, used again and again 40 in the Old Testament always is signifying time beyond time, this extraordinary time. (Excerpted from In Focus, The Presbyterian Outlook, February 16, 2015) Do you know about today s Presbyterian presence in the Caribbean? Aside from the idealized world of travel images and all-inclusive resorts, the rest of the Caribbean is a place where people strive for employment, dignity and education for their children and struggle against rampant violence, inequity and poverty. The U.S. Presbyterian Church in the Caribbean has ministered alongside its church partners for more than 100 years. Until the Cuban revolution, the Presbyterian Reformed Church in Cuba was part of the Presbyterian Church in the USA s Synod of New Jersey. The present-day united church in the Dominican Republic the Dominican Protestant Church recently celebrated its 90th anniversary as an independent church. That denomination s Presbyterian, Methodist and Moravian roots are a product of nineteenth-century mission. The U.S. church s mission engagement in these countries today includes evangelism and theological education, advocacy for reconciliation across many barriers and addressing root causes of poverty. For information about specific projects, go to page 34 of the issue from which this article was taken. (Excerpted from Horizons, January-February 2015) LAFFS will not meet during Lent. Our next lunch get-together will be in May. The March Women s Bible Study is being cancelled so that those interested can attend the discussions at the church. We will meet in April at Connie Huntington's house to cover the final chapter in our book. Also at the April study, all are asked to bring ideas to discuss for our next study. Special Lenten Services MUSICAL NOTES One of my favorite aspects of Lent is the profound choral music appropriate to the time. The St. Matthew Passion by Johann Sebastian Bach is widely considered to be one of the greatest musical masterpieces of all time. Indeed, it is considered by many to be one of the greatest works of human invention. The piece takes approximately three hours to perform and features the passion narrative according to the Gospel of Matthew, sung in recitative (unmetered declamatory solo singing, usually presenting prose text following the rhythm of the words). The words of the crowd are presented as choral numbers. Then arias (metered solo singing, usually presenting poetic text) and choruses are interjected, presenting extra-biblical texts as emotional reflection upon the action contained in the narrative. Below you will find a link to the English translation of the libretto, along with a youtube video of the entire performance. I certainly don t expect you to listen to the entire thing, although there are worse things you might do with three hours. I hope you might enjoy sampling a little of what is the equivalent to musicians of Shakespeare s plays to a thespian or the Mona Lisa to an artist. Samuel Hugh Moffett (1916-2015) We are sad to share the obituary of Samuel Hugh Moffett. He was the son of the Rev. Dr. Samuel Austin Moffett who was the founder of the Presbyterian Church in Pyongyang and Northwester, Korea and the leader of one of the largest mission stations in the world for 40 years. The Moffett family played a large role in the history of Madison Presbyterian Church. Samuel Hugh Moffett's grandfather, Samuel S. (Sam) Moffett, operated one of the first dry goods stores in Madison. Sam served 20 years as treasurer of the this church and was married to Maria McKee, a member of one of the church's founding families. Their names appear on one of the memorial windows placed in the church in 1913. Sam and Maria had six children. Four of the boys entered Christ's service as ministers and missionaries. The fifth son, Rob, served as his father had as our church treasurer. He also was the general chairman of the church's 100th anniversary celebration in 1915. Daughter Susan married Dr. David Moffatt who was pastor of our church from October 1866 to January 1870. The Moffett and Moffat children worshipped together in our church. David is the only person raised in our church to return as its pastor. A Great Man Died Today Special to Presbyterian News Service S U N G - D E U K O A K Obituary for Samuel Hugh Moffett Samuel Hugh Moffett (April 7, 1916-February 9, 2015) passed peacefully at his home in Princeton, NJ, on February 9. He was born in Pyongyang, Korea, on April 7, 1916, as the third son of Rev. Dr. Samuel Austin Moffett (1864-1939). His father was the founder of the Presbyterian Church in Pyongyang and Northwestern Korea and the leader of one of the largest mission stations in the world for 40 years. He graduated from Pyongyang Foreign School as valedictorian in 1934 and Wheaton College with summa cum laude in 1938. He graduated from Princeton Theological Seminary in 1942 and received Ph. D. in history at Yale University in 1945. Moffett followed in his parents footsteps in spiritual life, missionary service, and teacher s work. In 1947 he and his wife were appointed by the Presbyterian board as missionaries to Shanghai, China. When the civil war was going on, he served as a faculty member of Yenjing University in Beijing and then of Nanking Theological Seminary until forced out of the country in 1951 by the communists. He returned to Princeton Theological Seminary as a faculty member from 1953 to 1955. His wife Elizabeth died in 1955, after which he returned to the land of his birth Korea--in November 1955. He remarried with Miss Eileen Flower in September 1956. They started their missionary work in the rural area of Andong and learned Korean culture and language there for three years. He was appointed to a faculty of Presbyterian Theological Seminary in 1959. Until 1981 he served as Dean of the graduate school and co-president of Korean Presbyterian Seminary. He also participated in many ecumenical organizations such as Soongsil University, Yonsei University, and Korea Bible Society as a member of board of directors or a committee member. He also served as the first director of the Asian Center for Theological Studies, which was built for the education of Asian church leaders in 1973. After 26 years work in Korea, he returned to America and was appointed as Henry Luce Professor of Ecumenics and Mission at Princeton Theological Seminary for five years, retiring in 1986. He was a leading scholar on the history of Christianity in East Asia and in the global ecumenical movement. He was the author of numerous publications, including The History of Christianity in Asia, Whe'er the Sun, The Christians of Korea, and The Biblical Background of Evangelicalism.
