History of the United States This week we celebrate the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776 We think of our early presidents like George Washington, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, and James Madison. But today we will consider other historical documents that even we Americans may have heard about but don t realize their importance. Mystery Person #1 A native American Indian, Canassatego (c. 1684 1750) He was a leader of the Onondaga Indian tribe. who became a prominent diplomat and spokesman of the Iroquois Confederacy in the 1740s. Indian tribes had been fighting over hunting grounds for centuries. But now the white man had appeared with wood and metal sticks that made loud noises. ICC July 2, 2017 11
Canassatego helped form the Iroquois Confederacy in the 1740s. The Iroquois developed the first united republic Confederacy in America. Their confederation was represented symbolically by arrows bound together. (Time to open my mystery bag here.) Quoting their creed: Five arrows shall be bound together very strong and each arrow shall represent one nation. As the five arrows are strongly bound this shall symbolize the complete union of the nations.. ICC July 2, 2017 12
Canassatego Canassatego s speech at the 1744 meeting where he recommended that the British colonies emulate the Iroquois by forming a confederacy. Symbolism on the One Dollar Bill The eagle holds a banner in its beak with the words "E Pluribus Unum," which translates to mean "Out of many, one. In the right talon it holds an olive leaf the symbol of peace. In the left talon it holds 13 arrows that shall be bound together very strong and each arrow shall represent one nation. Mercy Otis Warren (1728-1814) She was true-blue Puritan, a Mayflower descendent from Plymouth Rock. She learned early on that her supreme duty, and the supreme duty of all women, was to submit to the will of God. She tried but failed to get a bill of rights into the US Constitution. She had an ongoing feud with John Adams VP under George Washington. She believed the constitution gave too much power to the federal government. She was an advocate for individual human rights. Eventually the Bill of Rights was added as the first 10 Amendments to the US Constitution in 1791. All based upon her writings and the power of the pen. ICC July 2, 2017 18

Mystery of the Gospel Mystery? Paul an Apostle of Jesus Christ Prayed: that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you a spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of Him, Ephesians 1:17 We cannot understand the Mystery of the Gospel without God s help of the Holy Spirit.
