Commanders Corner The weather has been great so far this spring, and hoping for an even greater Minnesota summer. We have our Holland Club breakfast on Friday March 31st, our first river boat cruise June 3rd, and our annual base picnic August 5th. I would like to encourage all of you to attend these great events. The Holland club breakfast is a traditional Navy breakfast. This year, because this is a free breakfast to our members and their families, we need your reservations please. In the past, I made enough food to feed fifty guests and our numbers have been far fewer than that. To save the base money, I m going to prepare enough food for those with reservations. Please call John Barnes with your reservations. More information about these events will appear later in our newsletter. Remember also that our annual business meeting and election of our base Board of Directors has been moved up to April to facilitate our boating excursion this June. If you want to run for office or nominate someone for office, please contact David E. Anderson or any board member prior to the April meeting. See you March 31st and or April 1st. George St. Martin, Base Commander Chaplains Corner As this is being written, the temps are in the 50 s and the ice is finally leaving driveways and parking lots in northern MN. This was left from the Christmas rain and snow. Remember, March is coming, as well as colder weather and more snow. But, the promise is out there, spring will come. Remember the St. Patrick s parade on Saturday March 18. This is the beginning of SPRING in Crosslake. It is always warm or cold for this event, but either way, 5000 to 15,000 will attend the parade that starts at 2:00 pm. Come join us in Crosslake. Our float will be there, contact John Barnes for more information. This thought for the past Christmas season, On Christmas day, when our family gather around the table, we bow our heads and say grace for the food before us and for the best gift the Lord ever gave us, each other. Dolly Parton You are not born with a fixed amount of resilience. Like a muscle, you can build it up, and draw on it when you need it. In that process, you will figure out who you really are and you might become the very best version of yourself. Sheryl Sandberg Chief operating officer of Facebook. Please remember, Del Holmberg who rested his oar recently. He was one of our regulars and Master at Arms for many years. The best to all, as spring comes. Hope to see many of you at the meeting in April. By Andy Anderson 3

Minutes February 2017 Dinner Meeting By, John Barnes 2/04/2017 February Base Meeting Once again we dined at David Fong's in Bloomington because our normal place over booked our night. We will be back in Spring Lake Park for April Fool s Day. Really! We met in the small room upstairs behind the bar to make it easier for those of us that don't handle stairs as well as we would like. We had 56 people in a room that could squeeze 50 into. Eating in this room gave the smoke-boat sailors flash backs to the good old days in the crews mess, the Nuke only sailors got the feeling of how nice they had it and the guests must have thought how could we live like this. The wait staff did a great job serving as mess cooks. Shipmates and guest included John & Audrey Hagen, John & Mary Barnes, Ken & Jackie Dallman, Ken Tibesar, Tom Bullinger, Ernie & Pat Kertzscher, David Anderson, Andy & Dottie Anderson, Mark Quinlan, Steve & Janie Lowrie, Jeff Lundgren, Joel & Rose Ann, Rod Johnson, Steve & Penny Marquis, Carl & Roberta sons Steve & John Gronemann, Danial & Nancy Lee, Robert & Ana Rueckert, Thomas & Marcia Wilcox, Keith & Gwen Larson, Rolly & Marilyn Conklin, Jim & Pat Thoreson, Pat Lyon, David & Kay Harms, Greg Cotton, Doug Dokken, Jack Fay, Lyle & Gail Holm, Lloyd & Maxine Kornmann, Ken & Prentice, Gary & Shirley Olsen, Stan Kowalski and Tom Wiesen. Give or take one. It was good to see Eddie Fong and his crew again. The food was great and no one left hungry Steve Marquis picked up 3 cakes, one white, one chocolate and a marble cake so some people could have one of each. Thanks Steve. 50 / 50 Drawing: Two hundred forty six tickets for the 50/50 fundraiser were sold. Stan Kowalski had the winning ticket for $123.00. Also many great donated, door prizes were won by lucky winners. Donators were very generous with prizes too many to name. The boat was surfaced by our Base Vice-Commander, Jeff Lundgren, adjourning the meeting at 2045. Minutes & Report respectfully, submitted by John Barnes, Base MAA 5
