I ve been doing this more and more lately, laying hold of wonderful insights on what it means to have a real conversation with God. Re-reading the Old Testament books of Ezra and Nehemiah over the last week or so, I spent some quality time on their prayers, and it struck me how relevant for today is the way they both prayed. Ezra and Nehemiah go together because they were contemporaries involved with the rebuilding of Jerusalem after the exile. You may remember that the time came when the Israelites were conquered by enemy armies, a result of stubborn, chronic rebellion against God. Many of them went into captivity, and the remnant that survived until the time of Cyrus, King of Persia, were finally granted permission to return to their homeland. Ezra came back as the head priest, while Nehemiah was appointed governor over those who returned. They were both godly men, true examples of what it means to follow God in daily life. Which makes what they prayed all the more intriguing. forefathers until now, OUR guilt has been great Then Nehemiah 1:5-7: O Lord, God of heaven, the great and awesome God, who keeps His covenant of love with those who love Him and obey His commands, let your ear be attentive and your eyes open to hear the prayer your servant is praying before you day and night for your servants, the people of Israel. I confess the sins WE Israelites, including myself and my father s house, have committed against you. WE have acted very wickedly toward you. WE have not obeyed your commands, decrees and laws you gave your servant Moses. Do you see what s happening? Both men are taking the sins of their people personally. Each is identifying personally with the iniquity and transgressions of his fellow Israelites and investing himself in passionate confession and sincere repentance. There is no them and us. It s just us! Can we not, should we not, in like manner pray for our nation and our church? Isn t this what love for one another demands? Do we not rise or fall together? Joining you in prayer, Pastor Bill Listen to a snatch of Ezra s prayer, then Nehemiah s (emphasis will be mine). Ezra 9:6-7: O my God, I am too ashamed to lift up my face to you, my God, because OUR sins are higher than OUR heads and OUR guilt has reached to the heavens. From the days of our
