The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character - that is the goal of true education. -Martin Luther King, Jr. Notes from Michelle Monday is a holiday to commemorate Dr. Martin Luther King s birthday. The Community Connection Committee has written about ways to honor his work and memory for the Friday Folder this week. We would like to thank everyone who visited the Holiday Boutique in the Adolescent Program room. They were able to make over $3000 that day. This will help towards the trip to the Montessori Model United Nations. This is an amazing, yet expensive trip and everything that goes towards helping with the cost is welcomed! Next Friday is the crab feed, another part of the AP fundraising. We hope to see many of you there. Also, please note that Friday, January 25 is an early dismissal day. This is time to allow teachers to work on student report cards. We will have those out to you on February 1. Have a great long weekend. Notes from CCC (Community Connection Committee) This Monday we are fortunate to be celebrating Martin Luther King Jr Day. Along with other amazing leaders of the civil rights movement, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. did something that most people thought was impossible. He mobilized a huge number of people, organized them into peaceful action, and succeeded in changing laws-- as well as hearts and minds---for many Americans. In the current climate where sadly many people with hateful tendencies have been emboldened, it can often feel like there's nothing that can be done. But that is certainly how people in the 1960s and before felt, facing racial segregation and much worse. Many during that era felt hopeless. Many swallowed their anger and sadness and just accepted the injustice around them. But some, and especially Martin Luther King Jr., chose to believe that they could have an impact no matter how bad things seemed. Believing in oneself despite seemingly impossible challenges is no easy feat, but it's also only the first step. The next is even tougher: making personal sacrifices to make the world a better place for others. We all have our own battles to face in our lives. It's understandable to feel like you're already giving all you can and have nothing else to offer. But the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is inspiring proof of the super-human strength and bravery that can be summoned when you truly believe

Notes from CCC (con t) (Community Connection Committee) things can get better. It's no small detail that his famous "I Have A Dream" speech talked about his young children...as parents we have an emotional and spiritual investment in the future that can provide the unstoppable energy and faith that sacrifice requires. The CCC does work that seeks to increase connection and justice in our community, and that work does require some sacrifice. As committee chairs and members, we can't always give as much as we want to. Kids get sick, schedules get full, funds run low, meetings get missed and projects get delayed. But each one of us sacrifices where and when we can because we believe that a school like ours can have an impact no matter how bad things seem in the world outside. In 2019 we ask sincerely that all of our EPMS parents think about a small sacrifice they can make to support this belief, whether it means attending our next meeting in February, emailing us to volunteer on a project, or just taking time this Monday to reflect on the lives of inspiring leaders like Martin Luther King Jr. with your children. If you're ready to get more involved this year, please email us at epmsccc@gmail.com. Thank you and enjoy your holiday! Monday Gathering 6 th grade leaders: Aden Jensen and Ella Borland 5 th Grade Quotes: Matthew Slaughter Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever.
