New Testament Unit 3: Jesus Did Amazing Things Lesson 4: Jesus Helped a Little Girl God s Unfolding Story Bible Story: Jesus Helped a Little Girl (Mark 5:21-43). Bible Phrase: God gave Jesus power to help people (Acts 10:38). Bible Truth: Jesus was not an ordinary man. Because Jesus was God s Son, He could do amazing things. 1. God created everything 2. People disobeyed God. 3. God chose a special people. 4. God sent Jesus to help us. 5. Jesus began the Church. 6. Jesus is preparing heaven for us. Suggested Schedule: Arrival Centers 25 minutes Clean-up Time 5 minutes Bible Story Time 15 minutes Craft Time 10 minutes Snack Time 10 minutes Game Time/Dismissal Hour B Unfolding God s Story for Teachers This month, we have looked at the amazing ways Jesus exercised His power from God over nature, fear and limited resources. These revelations were intentional and specific. All were part of God s plan to show His love and power over things that can overwhelm us. Our final story in this unit reveals Jesus power over death. There are only three recorded events in which Jesus brought back someone from the dead. They are: the widow s son, Lazarus, and today s story about Jairus daughter. Please read Mark 5:21-43. Our story opens when Jesus stepped out of a boat onto the shore and was greeted by a crowd of people. This was a typical scenario for Jesus and His disciples. At this point in His ministry, He drew large crowds of people. Many sought healing; and others recognized He was the Messiah, but thought only of an earthly king. A man in the crowd was Jairus. He was a leader or administrator of the synagogue. Jairus made his way to Jesus. Because of his need, he put aside any politics or presuppositions. Jairus kneeled down and begged Jesus to come to his home because his daughter was close to death. Jesus did not delay in His intent to go. He pressed against the crowd toward Jairus house. Suddenly, Jesus felt power going from Him. Someone had touched Him. After much inquiry, it was learned that a woman who had been suffering for 12 years with a bleeding condition had touched His robe. In a beautiful encounter, Jesus did not condemn her, but commended her faith. Jairus must have seen this and been encouraged. Encouragement turned to grief when a group came to tell Jairus his daughter had died and that he no longer needed to bother Jesus. However, Jesus overheard the conversation and told Jairus, Don t be afraid; just believe. We are never a bother to Jesus. Whatever our situation, He is there. Jesus went with Jairus to his home. He dismissed the mourners who ridiculed His remarks that she was asleep. Jesus brought quietness and peace. Fear went out the door and faith filled the room. Jesus took the little girl by the hand and told her to get up. Immediately, she rose and began to walk. Their fear was conquered by their faith in Christ. What a moment, what a Savior! As believers, we have this same hope Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death is your sting? (1 Cor. 15:55). Our message to preschoolers is that Jesus deeply loves and cares for them. Even in death we have hope to live with Jesus forever. Lesson Plan Arrival Greet children at eye level and express how happy you are to see them. Be sure each child has a name tag and the security measures of your church are followed. Label all coats and personal belongings. Strongly encourage children who have brought items from home, such as toys and books, to place them on a shelf while they are working with other materials. Assure children their items will be safe and they can take them home at the end of the session. Help each child make a choice where he or she would like to begin his or her Center Time. Children take turns trying to find matches from memory. Link to the Bible Story: As children play the game, talk about the amazing ways Jesus showed His power in the Bible NT03 Lesson 4 Hour B Page 2 stories.

When Jesus got in the boat, the winds and the waves got still. Comment, Today we will hear another amazing miracle that Jesus did. Listen to hear how Jesus helped a little girl. Bible Story Jesus Helped a Little Girl (Mark 5:21-43) Jesus traveled from town to town teaching the people about God s love and healing those who were sick. One day, Jesus got in a boat and crossed the water to the other side of the lake. When He walked onto the shore, a large crowd was there to meet Him. A man named Jairus was in the crowd. Jairus was sad because his little girl was very sick, and he wanted to see Jesus. When Jairus saw Jesus, he fell down on his knees and said, My little girl is very sick. Please come and make her well! Jesus wanted to help the little girl, so He went with Jairus to his house. As they walked through the large crowd, a group of people came to Jairus and said, Your daughter has died. You don t need to bother Jesus anymore. However, Jesus heard what they said and told Jairus, Don t be afraid; only believe. They came to Jairus house, and Jesus went inside. He asked the mother and father to come with Him into the little girl s room. Jesus walked over to the little girl lying on the bed. He took her hand and said, Little girl, get up! Immediately, the little girl got up out of the bed and began to walk around the room. Jesus told the parents to give her something to eat. Her parents were so thankful for the amazing way Jesus had helped their little girl. Talk Time 1. Show the teaching picture for today s Bible story. Ask the following: Why was Jairus sad? What happened before they could get to Jairus house? What amazing thing did Jesus do? 2. Read the Bible phrase on the teaching picture. Say the phrase together. Express to preschoolers that Jesus showed His power by healing the little girl. 3. Close the Bible Story Time by inviting children to join you in prayer. Allow any interested preschooler to pray. Conclude prayer time by thanking God for sending His Son, Jesus, and the amazing ways He showed His power. 4. Direct children to Craft Time. NT03 Lesson 4 Hour B Page 3
