2017 The Jacksboro Parish October_ Please help the church office stay informed of all schedule and event changes by calling or emailing as changes become available. Thank you! Contact Us Give us a call for information about our Worship Service. Jacksboro Parish 115 N. Knox St. P.O. Box 716 Jacksboro, TX 76458 (940) 567-3735 When you are wondering about a new place to go, a restaurant to try, or reviews on an item, where do you go? For most of us, we turn to the world wide web. The vast array of content that is easy to navigate allows us to interact with a place/person/item without leaving our home. And loads of people do the same for churches. People check out churches on websites more and more these days to find out what kind of worship they can expect, what kids programs are offered, to see small groups in action and more. It is important to have a clean website that is easy to interact with! Church websites are great for members, too: they share updates to calendars, keep current on retreats and other goings on, highlight worship and mission opportunities, and we hope that you will take a chance to look at our new, updated website: www.jacksboroparish.com and give us your feedback! jackparish@att.net Visit us on the web at www.jacksboroparish.com First Presbyterian Church & Memorial Christian Church: A combined ministry for over 40 years. Building Project Update In case you haven t noticed, renovation and expansion of the church facilities is in full swing. The project seemed slow getting started, but is now moving at rapid pace. The builder hopes to finalize construction by late January so we re less than four months away from having our new spaces. For those of you who have not made a pledge or donation, now is the time to do so. We have received pledges and/or donations totaling over $719,000. Wow! Unfortunately that s still at least $136,000 shy of what we ll need to complete the project. As with any remodel, we ve made a few small discoveries which will potentially add some expense, but we ve been working diligently with the architect and builder on value engineering to keep all costs to a minimum. In the next couple of weeks the trustees will be making financial arrangements to borrow money for completion of the project. Please let the church office know if you have a pledge that needs to be turned in or a donation that s going to be made so that the trustees will know how much money will need to be secured. What an exciting time for the Parish! Thanks for all the contributions of money and time towards this building effort, and we look forward to celebrating completion of the project in January. submitted by Brent Hackley

Stewardship Campaign We have a unique opportunity in our annual stewardship campaign this year! This year s theme Journey to Generosity, picks up on the notion that we are sent on a mission to reveal the Realm of God. In each of the synoptic gospels, Jesus sends out the twelve with the purpose of demonstrating through their actions (healing, preaching, and casting out demons) that God s Realm is breaking into the world. It is the generous action of a loving God who seeks to bring wholeness to the world in which we live. As followers of Jesus, we too are to model this generosity as we journey on in faithfulness. The way of Jesus begins with the recognition of God s love for all, and includes responding to that love with love for others. We are on a mission from God! In October, we will be celebrating the many ways generosity is shared, and we hope you won t miss a moment! Be on the lookout for special letters and invitations to prayerfully consider your pledge for 2018 as we expand ministry together. October 1 World Communion Sunday Worship October 8 Journey to Generosity October 15 Journey to Generosity October 22 Journey to Generosity This year marks the 500th anniversary celebration of the REFORMATION. History tells us that the Protestant Reformation of the 16th Century was not only religious, but spanned into the political, intellectual and cultural realities across a mostly Catholic Europe. Reformers like Martin Luther and John Calvin challenged the papal authority and questioned the Catholic Church s ability to define Christian practice. October 29th we will have a special service of worship that celebrates the ideals first uplifted from the Reformation and hope you will be in attendance for this special day! Nurture & Evangelism submitted by Roxanna Maddox The Nurture Committee has developed a new prayer card and wanted you to know that they are available in the church office for your use. We hope you will find the new prayer cards to be inspirational and uplifting, and can be utilized for a variety of reasons. Perhaps you know someone who is experiencing health problems, the death of a loved one, depression, etc. These new cards may be given for a variety of reasons and were craftily developed with additional blank space on the reverse side of the cards for the sender to hand write a personal note. We encourage you to drop by the church office and pick up a few cards/envelopes to have on hand as needed. In the texting/emailing society that we currently live in, the Nurture Committee would like to encourage you to take a few minutes out of your busy day and mail a prayer card to one who is in need. Perhaps you don t know what to say? The prayer card speaks for itself Just sign your name and put it in the mail! It truly will be appreciated!

From the desk of. Rev. Dr. Suzanne Castle Do you dream of having your children s ministry reach more kids for Jesus Christ? It will take volunteers. Want to start a ministry to serve your community? It will take volunteers. Wish we reached more youth in Jacksboro? It will take volunteers. Bottom line, if you want our church to grow in any way, it will take volunteers. And volunteers are the backbone of how we do ministry here at The Parish with all of our staff being part-time. Take a look at Romans chapter 12; it s very clear. The church is described as a body with many parts doing different things, each one important. It s the Biblical way to do church. And statistics consistently show that people want to volunteer. Most want to make a difference in our world and live out faith, but let s face it: we struggle to grow our volunteer culture. Time and again, I m in meetings and consultations were we talk about the 80:20 principle: 80% of the work is done by 20% of the people. As we expand our theology of stewardship this fall to include GENEROSITY, I hope we are all prayerful about how we are/are not generous with our time to The Parish. Do you have 30 minutes a week? Do you have an hour? How about 1/2 day? There are multiple opportunities to help with all sorts of ministries and we can match you with your hopes, dreams and passion. Let s be the body of God together! Suzanne
