St Clair Street Happenings Calvary United Methodist Church Ligonier PA Pastor- May 2015 secretary.cumc@verizon.net FROM THE DESK OF PASTOR JOSH Welcome to month number two of talking about Autopsy of a Deceased Church the book by Thom S. Rainer. If you remember the book s main topic was looking at a selection of churches that died and trying to find the reasons for that death. This month s chapter deals with the issue of slow erosion. Slow erosion explains a phenomenon that happens in many churches. Members and attenders are so close to the situation since they are present week after week that they don t see the gradual decline of the church or they don t see it until someone points it out to them. The decline could be in the building or in the amount of small groups in the church. The decline could be in the prayer life of the church or its focus on ministry outside of the church walls. It could be happen in a number of different ways. The point is to realize it has happened. Many people refuse to see that decline has taken place. Therefore they never do anything to try and change course. The decline continues on. To avoid further decline you have to notice that it is happening. Then you have to do something about it. So this month s prayer focus comes from this emphasis. Let our eyes be open to seek solutions and avoid the slow erosion of the church. It is my hope that you will pray this prayer often this month. God, please let me be part of the solution and not the problem. Show me what I need to see. Open my eyes to your reality. And give me the courage to move forward in the direction you desire. (Page 15, Autopsy of a Deceased Church) Pastor Josh * * * * * * * * GRADUATES 2015 If you know of any one from our congregation that will be Graduating this year, please let either Pastor Josh or the office know so that they can be recognized for their accomplishments. KIDS' MINISTRY JUNE UPDATE This month, our Preschoolers will be learning about God the Magnificent Creator. We will be talking about the creation of the world, Adam and Eve, and the events that followed. We always include drama, music, and fun games to make learning memorable. Our elementary kids continue to learn about God s love with Miss Sandy. Group s Hands-On Bible Curriculum, which uses captivating gizmos and Jesus teaching style to bring kids closer to God! Gizmos" such as drama, sound bites, and fun games serve to help kids understand important Bible truths. Last week, we learned Because God loves us, we can love others. The kids activity center at Spaghetti dinner appears to be a big hit! After children have finished their supper, they join us on stage for games, building activities, pla-doh shaping, coloring, and other fun activities. We have enjoyed providing a fun time for children while their parents enjoy their dinners. This month, we are trying out kids worship during the first 15 minutes of the adult worship service. We will play their worship music downstairs, so the kids can have their own space to worship in their own bouncy, energetic way! Kids activity bags are provided for preschool through grade 5 during worship services. The bags are chalk full of marker boards, small games, coloring pages, books, and small toys to occupy young minds during big church time with their families. We will be adding new summer-themed wall decorations for the kids stairs and hallways. We also plan to add some interactive wall displays for the children, including magnet boards and simple activities such as tic-tac-toe. If you would like to help with planning, buying, or installing these decorations, please contact Karen Ricketts at 724-834-5169. Your help would be greatly appreciated! All children are invited to join us! SUNDAY MORNING AT
