THE LAMINGTON PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH We are a family of faith wrapping our arms around God s world and making Jesus Christ a way of life through worship, as we praise and glorify God; through study, as we listen for God s Word in body, mind and spirit; through mission, as we embody God's love in service to the world; through giving, as we express gratitude to God; through fellowship, as we love and care for one another. SEVENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST

July 8, 2018 THE ORDER OF WORSHIP SEVENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST 10:15AM RINGING THE BELL So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed. -John 8:36 PREPARATION FOR THE WORD PRELUDE Suite in E-flat Major, BWV 815 Corrente Sarabande Gavotte Johann Sebastian Bach WELCOME * PASSING OF THE PEACE Leader: The peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. People: With your spirit we yearn for justice to be done, Leader: For creation to be freed from bondage, People: For the hungry to be fed, Leader: For captives to be released, People: For your kingdom of peace to come on earth. Leader: Let us worship the God whose mercy sets us free! * GATHERING HYMN 181 Come Sing to God ELLACOMBE * INVITATION TO CONFESSION * PRAYER OF CONFESSION (unison) Source of all that gives us life, we have turned away from your authority to our own small concerns. Forgive us for our failure to bear one another s burdens, for boasting of anything but your cross, for believing in our own power to justify our lives, and for denying your call to take comfort in you alone. Lead us to the river of life, that in all we do, we may honor your name.

* KYRIE You are the Lord, giver of mercy! You are the Christ, giver of mercy! You are the Lord, giver of mercy! * ASSURANCE OF GOD S PARDON * CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (Hymn 576) Jacques Berthier Gloria, gloria, in excelsis Deo! Gloria, gloria, alleluia, alleluia! PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION HEARING THE WORD FIRST READING Psalm 76 Leader: The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God. CHILDREN S MOMENT (Church school is on summer recess. Nursery Care is available for the very young children.) SOLO Suite in E-flat Major, BWV 815 Allemande J.S. Bach SECOND READING John 8:31-36 Leader: The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God. SERMON Meet Dr. Witherspoon The Rev. Dr. Carl Wilton RESPONSE TO THE WORD * HYMN 561 My Country, Tis of Thee AMERICA * AFFIRMATION OF FAITH (from the Theological Declaration of Barmen, 8.23-8.24) Scripture tells us that, in the as yet unredeemed world in which the Church also exists, the State has by divine appointment the task of providing for justice and peace. [It fulfills this task] by means of the threat and exercise of force, according to the measure of human judgment and human ability. The church acknowledges the benefit of this divine appointment in gratitude and reverence before him. It calls to mind the Kingdom of God, God s commandment and righteousness, and thereby the responsibility both of rulers and of the ruled. It trusts and obeys the power of the Word by which God upholds all things.

We reject the false doctrine, as though the State, over and beyond its special commission, should and could become the single and totalitarian order of human life, thus fulfilling the church s vocation as well. We reject the false doctrine, as though the church, over and beyond its special commission, should and could appropriate the characteristics, the tasks, and the dignity of the State, thus itself becoming an organ of the State. PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD S PRAYER THE OFFERING OF TITHES AND GIFTS OFFERTORY Suite in E-flat Major, BWV 815 J.S. Bach Menuet PRESENTATION OF GIFTS * DOXOLOGY (Hymn 592) Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; Praise Him, all creatures here below; Praise Him above, ye heavenly host; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen. PRAYER OF DEDICATION THE SENDING * SENDING HYMN Mine Eyes Have Seen the Glory Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord; he is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored; he has loosed the fateful lightning of his terrible swift sword. God s truth is marching on. Refrain: Glory, glory hallelujah! Glory, glory hallelujah! Glory, glory hallelujah! God s truth is marching on. I have seen him in the watchfires of a hundred circling camps, they have builded him an altar in the evening dews and damps; I can read his righteous sentence by the dim and flaring lamps; his day is marching on. (Refrain) God has sounded forth the trumpet that shall never call retreat and is sifting out all human hearts before the judgment seat; O be swift, my soul, to answer; O be jubilant my feet! Our God is marching on. (Refrain) In the beauty of the lilies Christ was born across the sea, with a glory in his bosom that transfigures you and me; as he died to make us holy, let us live to make all free, while God is marching on. (Refrain)

* BENEDICTION * POSTLUDE Suite in E-flat Major, BWV 815 Air J.S. Bach * All who are able please stand Welcome to Lamington: If you are a guest, please fill out the information card in the pew and return it in the offering plate or to the pastor or usher at the end of the service. If you have a pastoral care emergency and need assistance immediately, please contact Pastor Carl Wilton at (908) 910-5360. Today s Worship Notes Memories of flags and fireworks are still in our heads, after our recent Independence Day celebrations. That makes this a good time for considering the vexed question of the proper relationship between religion and politics. We ll do so by looking into the sermons and writings of the most famous Presbyterian leader of the Revolutionary War era, a man who s all but forgotten today: the Rev. John Witherspoon, a New Jerseyan who signed the Declaration of Independence. You may be surprised how far Dr. Witherspoon went in advocating for one side of the political struggle of his day: he promoted total independence from Great Britain, even if that meant revolution. Dr. Witherspoon joined the other signers of the Declaration in putting our lives, our fortunes and our sacred honor on the line. Our Affirmation of Faith is the most significant statement of the separation of church and state found in our PC(USA) Book of Confessions. It comes from the Theological Declaration of Barmen, adopted in 1933 in Barmen, Germany by the Confessing Church: that group of Protestant church leaders who stood against the Nazi government s effort to make the church into an organ of the totalitarian regime. Some of them were imprisoned and even lost their lives for their opposition to Hitler. DEACON: Sandi Ramsay LITURGIST: Valerie Fraser LEMONADE SUNDAY HOSTS: Sandi & Rich Ramsay
