World Woman's Christian Temperance Union Glenda Amos, World Director of the Children's Department 4 Advance Drive Woodrising, New South Wales 2284 Australia Email:kgamos@dodo.com.au Website: www.drug-freekids.com Dear White Ribbon Sisters, In the last White Ribbon Bulletin (Volume 105, No. 3 - available from the WWCTU website: www.wwctuof on page 9), I gave some suggestions of things that you can do to work with children and gave you the challenge to choose one thing to try to accomplish by October. How has it gone? Were you able to reach your goal? Don't stop at just one thing - expand your horizon and find a new goal for the next quarter. In this Program Kit, I have designed some activities for the following year to help you lead children on a journey of"following Jesus". You may want to do this in a group, or with individual children like your own children or grandchildren or a neighbour's child/children. You may want to use it in a newsletter for your local area or as an activity for children while adults are meeting or for a school group. You could even put them in the letter box of children in your neighbourhood. One of the activities can be used as a coloring competition. The material highlights areas of commitments - God to us, and our commitment to God. It then addresses commitments that we can help the children to make - to a healthy lifestyle, to Bible study and prayer, to good friendships, to pure environments and to making a difference in our world. I would encourage you to use the material in any way that you can. Additional material is also available on the website - www.drug-freekids.com. Use these resources and encourage the children to extend themselves by using the website, too. When the children have completed the activities, allow them to go online to check their answers on the website. Answers will be available on the website from the end of September, 2010. This will help them to become familiar with the site. Encourage them to think of ways that they can invite their friends to go online as well and to sign the pledge or send a message. I would also encourage you to send me the email address of the children' s leader from your country to whom I can send the names of children from your country who sign the pledge, so that you can follow them up locally to encourage them in their decision to be drug-free kids. Make a difference in the lives of the children around you. Remember that Jesus said, "Whoever welcomes one such child in My name welcomes Me." (Matthew 18:5) Enter enthusiastically into this partnership with Christ! Yours in Service, Glenda Amos Materials included for the Children s Department 12 ActivitySheets 7 pages of instruction for the teachers

1. God s Promise to Us Help the wise men find the baby Jesus! God loves you! MEMORY VERSE: 1 John 4:9 This is how God showed His love among us: He sent His one and only Son into the world that we might live through Him.

2. We Can Choose to Follow Jesus MEMORY VERSE: John 12:26 Whoever serves Me, must follow Me. 12 disciples made a commitment to follow Jesus. One of them appears twice in this picture. See if you can find him! You can choose to follow Jesus too.

3. We Can Choose a Drug-free Life Francis Willard made a promise when she was a young lady that she always kept. Work out the pledge that she signed and placed in the Family Bible from the pictures below. You can make a promise like this too. Why not sign the promise below and determine to be true to it. MY PROMISE: I promise, with God's help, to abstain from alcohol, tobacco, and all other harmful drugs. Signed:...... Date:.../.../.....

4. Protection in Temptation Match the pictures to the Bible verse, then unscramble the names of the four people who were able to withstand temptation and stand firm for God because His Word was firmly planted in their hearts. Learn the memory texts in these lessons to help you to stand firm for God. A. 2 Tim. 3:15 [GW] From infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures. They have the power to give you wisdom so that you can be saved through faith in Christ Jesus. B. Matthew 4:10 "Go away, Satan! Scripture says, 'Worship the Lord your God and serve only Him.'" C. Daniel 1:8 [GW]... made up his mind not to harm himself by eating the king's rich food and drinking the king's wine. D. Genesis 39:9 How then could I do such a wicked thing and sin against God?" YTMTOHI PESJHO LNADEI EUSJS MEMORY TEXTS: Psalm 119:11 I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you. Ephesians 6:11 Put on the full armour of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes.

5. Resisting Temptation Colour each space that has a dot in it to find the key when tempted to take drugs, drink alcohol, smoke or gamble. MEMORY TEXT: Proverbs 1:10 My child, if sinners entice you, do not give in to them.

6. Safeguarding our Environment There are many things around us that can draw our attention away from God and His goodness. Using the code on the television screen find out what qualities should guide us in choosing what we view on the TV or internet. A = 1 B = 2 C = 3 D = 4 E = 5 G = 6 H = 7 I = 8 L = 9 M = 0 N =! O = @ P = # R = $ S = % T = & U = + V =? W = < X = > Y = / Philippians 4:8 Whatever is &$+5, whatever is!@295, whatever is $867&, whatever is #+$5, MEMORY TEXTS: whatever is 9@?59/, whatever is 1408$1295-- if anything is 5> 35995!& or #$18%5<@$&7/-- think about such things. Psalm 101:3 I will set before my eyes!@?895 &78!6.

7. Importance of Good Friendships. Proverbs 13:20 Whoever walks with the wise will become wise; whoever walks with fools will suffer harm. There are at least 20 differences in the pictures above. See if you can find them all! MEMORY TEXT: Proverbs 18:24 (God s Word translation) Friends can destroy one another, but a loving friend can stick closer than family.

8. God s Protection and Escape Paths. MEMORY TEXT: 1 Cor. 10:13 God is faithful; He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, He will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it. Help Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego walk through the flames to Jesus. When you read Bible stories, look for God s escape plan in the stories: Example to follow Sin to avoid Command to obey About God / Jesus Promises to claim Explore more... Something to pray about You will always find at least one of these escape routes in every Bible passage.

9. Asking God for Help C K E E S P E A K I N G Y O P E N E D E S M N G O D N H C A O R P P A T O O D F G N I H T O N I E O C I I E N S E S I M O R P D K D S V I S N E H Y C R E M E F A I L R E Q U E S T S N I B L E L E V T D H P F C L A Y P C I W I E U M D E C A R G L E W S G D E A N R F A I T H R O N E T D P H E E S A R S I N A M E O U R H P K R F A Y E R S Find the bold underlined words in the word find. When you have found them all, take all the unused letters in order from the top across and down to the bottom to find a hidden message. When we are tempted we can always ask God for help. We can intercede - which means that we can place our requests for ourselves and for others before God in prayer. God is always willing to answer and has given us many promises. Matthew 7:7 Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. Luke 1:37 For nothing is impossible with God." Isaiah 65:24 Before they call I will answer; while they are still speaking I will hear. John 14:14 You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it. James 1:6 But ask in faith, never doubting.. Hebrews 4:16 Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need. _, _.

10. Helping Others. Colour in the picture. MEMORY TEXT: Eccles. 4:10, 12 If one falls down, his friend can help him up. But pity the man who falls and has no one to help him up!... Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.

11. Keeping Your Mind. Find the two letters that have been attacked on each computer screen. Then use the letters to find the hidden advice. You may need to put the letters in the right order. Saying No to alcohol is the best! Did you enow that your brain computkr is still dkvkloping? Thk brain is not fully dkvklopkd until the agk of 21 or oldkr. MEMORY TEXT: Romans 12:2 (NLT ) Don't copy the behaviour and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will know what God wants you to do, and you will know how good and pleasing and perfect His will really is.

12. A New Spirit Start at the arrow and take every 4th letter to find what you can do in your world through the power of God. THINGS TO TRY: Help a needy community Write to your government representative and thank them for good laws that they have passed. Send a postcard to the person who looks after health in your community asking them to support alcohol, smoking and drug control measures. Send a card to sports persons who stand up for a drug-free life and thank them for their example. Be an example to your peers showing them how to live a drug-free life. Share pledge cards with your friends and get them to sign them.! MEMORY TEXT: 2 Timothy 1:7 [NLT] For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.

Following Jesus Series 3. FEBRUARY We Can Choose a Drug free Life Pledges and Promises A Commitment to a Healthy Lifestyle. A. Story of Francis Willard s pledge making a promise MISS FRANCES WILLARD'S TEETOTAL PLEDGE. I began dry work when I was seventeen years old. In 1855 I cut from my favourite Youth's Cabinet, the chief juvenile paper of that day, the following pledge, and, pasting it in our family Bible, insisted on its being signed by every member of the family parents, brother, sister and self : A pledge we make no wine to take, Nor brandy red that turns the head, Nor fiery rum that ruins home, Nor brewers' beer, for that we fear, And cider, too, will never do. To quench our thirst, we'll always bring, Cold water from the well or spring; So here we pledge perpetual hate, To all that can intoxicate. B. Bible story Rechabites (Jeremiah 35) God used their faithfulness to their father as an example to His people Israel; Jeremiah 35:12 Then the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah, saying: [13] "This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: Go and tell the men of Judah and the people of Jerusalem, 'Will you not learn a lesson and obey my words?' declares the Lord. [14] 'Jonadab son of Rechab ordered his sons not to drink wine and this command has been kept. To this day they do not drink wine, because they obey their forefather's command. Memory Verses: Mark 8:34 "If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. Jeremiah 35:14 [God s Word translation] Jonadab, Rechab's son, ordered his descendants not to drink wine. This order has been carried out. His descendants have not drunk any wine to this day, because they have obeyed their ancestor's order. Activity Sheet: Decipher the pledge that Francis Willard made when she was 17. Following Jesus Series Activity Sheet: Find the differences in the pictures on being a good friend. Answer sheet on website www.drug freekids.com 8. JULY God s Protection and Escape Paths Emphasize the importance of having a close relationship with God through prayer and Bible study in order to escape temptation. Use the ESCAPES acrostic to explore Bible passages, showing how the Bible can be applied to their lives. This makes a good basis for a daily walk with God time and helps children to apply scripture to their personal life. Use the story in Daniel 3 as an example: (You can use any Biblical passage and will find at least one of these points in it) Example to follow The three young men who stood true for God among a crowd of people doing the opposite and were willing to face death for it. Sin to avoid worshipping anything other than God putting man s laws above God s. Command to obey God s command to have no other gods nor bow down or worship anything other than God. About God / Jesus Jesus walks with us when we are put to the test for him. He walked in the fire with them and rescued them. Promises to claim Daniel 3:17 If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to save us from it, and he will rescue us from your hand, O king. Our God can rescue His servants He will be with us when we stand true for Him. Explore more... What other stories can we find where God stepped in to help His people who were true to Him. Look for modern day examples. Something to pray about Courage to stand for God when everyone else is doing something different. God s power and presence to be with people who are being persecuted for standing true for Him right now. Memory Verses: 1 Corinthians 10:13 God is faithful; He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, He will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it. Activity Sheet: Help the 3 men to find their way to Jesus through the flames. 9. AUGUST Asking God for Help Following Jesus Series Helping children to understand prayer and that God is always available and we can call on Him at any time. Showing that God especially wants to help us withstand temptation. Look at the four ways God answers prayer: If the request is wrong God says NO If the timing is wrong God says SLOW If you are wrong God says GROW If everything is right God says GO Memory Verses: Matthew 7:7 Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. Activity Sheet: Find the words in the Word Find and then work out the hidden message. Answer sheet on website www.drug freekids.com 10. SEPTEMBER Helping Others To encourage the children to find another child that they can befriend and help. Form the children into a network of friends that will give positive peer pressure rather than negative peer pressure. Plan activities that can be done as a group camping, fishing, sports, a service project for others. Also explore the issues of bullying and how to form a group of friends to stand up for one another and support those who are vulnerable. Memory Verse: Ecclesiastes 4:10, 12 If one falls down, his friend can help him up. But pity the man who falls and has no one to help him up!... Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken. Activity Sheet: This activity sheet is a colour in. If you want to use it as a colouring competition and create some bigger networks, then a picture sheet

Following Jesus Series without the memory verse and with name details etc. is available on the website for that purpose www.drug freekids.com 11. OCTOBER Keeping Your Mind This session is designed to look at the way the brain functions, its growth pattern during childhood and adolescence and the damage caused to the brain by the use of alcohol and other drugs. Compare the brain to a computer and the care that is needed to keep them from damage and from viruses that destroy. Explain how drugs and alcohol can wipe out the executive functions of the brain. Also stress that the brain is the medium that God uses to communicate with us and the importance of keeping that channel open so that we will know what God wants for our lives. Memory Verse: Romans 12:2 (New Living Translation ) Don't copy the behaviour and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will know what God wants you to do, and you will know how good and pleasing and perfect His will really is. Activity Sheet: Find the damaged letters on the computers to discover a hidden message about your brain. Answers are on the website www.drugfreekids.com 12. NOVEMBER A New Spirit This section is designed to empower the children to know that they can make a difference in their communities. Help them to find a project that they can work on. Some suggestions are given on the activity sheet. Help them to understand that in partnership with God there is power to achieve. Help them to understand that all action must be coupled with the principles of love and self discipline in order to bring about a correct change and witness. Without these components, action or power can lead to abuse. Memory Verse: 2 Timothy 1:7 (New Living Translation) For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self discipline. Activity Sheet: Follow the letters around the circle, taking every 4 th letter to find what a good motto can be for action. Answer sheet is available on the website www.drug freekids.com
