Sam's Desk August is here, and we will be working out the details about our Walking Challenge which everyone did so great. I think we should make it an annual challenge. We started the Parkland Walking Challenge in February 2017 and it will end on the 31st of August. Then in September we will be having a party to celebrate and enjoy and talk about how we could make it better. Any ideas that could make it better for next year. I was happy to see some of our residents who joined in to this Walking Challenge that I had never seen in any activities before. As the saying goes "if you don't use it, you lose it" so let keep using it. I would like to give a shout out and a "Big Thanks" to Russel Kolasa who was so helpful to me during the whole process. Russel has been tracking the distance and marking it on that tiny little map of Canada that I posted so we could see our progress. I really appreciate the input and the help. Russel is very good on the computer, and built all those walk indicating how many check marks for different walks outside now it's summer. The party? I will definitely be having a party in September for the final results. I haven't picked a date yet. So many of you participated, I think I will work with the kitchen to figure something out. Since we don't really have a space big enough outside, I will probably have it in the Green Wing since we will be having Steak and seafood. And then all the accolades for individual achievements. ESTS bus. I want to apologize that we have not been able to use the bus for picnics yet, since there is no driver to take us. I am going to try and make the Hornbeck trip happen. I do have a lady who might pick up some trips to help us out. She is a school bus driver, regularly so she will do just fine I am sure. Her name is Tracy and just wants to help. Fingers crossed. August/September we usually have a volunteer appreciation of some sort. I was thinking we could do Oktoberfest. Oktoberfest is usually at the end of September which is bizarre since it has the work October in it. I will talk to some of the volunteers to see if we should switch it up. And I think if we could have it outside somehow, I would really like to invite any residents that might like to join in. Page 2 Thanks, Sam
AUGUST Page 3 QUOTE OF THE MONTH Good Clean Humor!
Page 4 Quote of the Month: Life always offers you a second chance...it's called Tomorrow. Birthstone of the Month: Peridot Peridot originally came from volcanic deposits on an island in the red sea now known as known as St. John s Island. The ancient Egyptians called Peridot the gem of the sun, believing it protected its wearer from terrors of the night, and Egyptian priests believed it harnessed the essence of nature. The Flower of The Month: Gladiolus The Gladiolus, otherwise known as the Sword Lily, is a perennial favored for its beautiful, showy flowers. Its flowers grow on tall spikes and are often found in cutting gardens or in the back along the border (because they are tall). These flowers represent remembrance, calm, integrity and infatuation. To give a Gladiolus means that the heart is "pierced with love."
Blurb from Ali We ve had such odd weather lately, normally August is sweltering hot but based on July s weather who knows. Regardless of what the weather tries to do we ll be taking the extra precautions to be weather wise and practice sun safety whenever we go outside. This month s highlights includes a lunch trip to A&W restaurant (I ll be bringing coupons too!), a lunch at the Pioneer Cabin, a picnic lunch at Bear Lake, a baby shower, the Boys and Girls Club visit, and we ll try to get out for a picnic at Wilmore. Please keep in mind we only have one bus and one bus driver at the moment and some trips may have to be cancelled. On Tuesday the 15 th at 1:30 we will be hosting a baby shower for our wonderful new mother, Amanda! It s been in the planning stages but it is finally time. If you d like to pitch in on a gift from the Lodge please see Sam or myself. The second event you ve been asking about is also here and that s the picnic at Sam s place. On Friday the 11 th we will be loading up and heading out! I want to remind you to please dress for the weather. Consider bringing a jacket or a coat even if it s hot out. It s better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it. We have two days at the end of the month we've designated for a meet up with Evansburg's Sunshine Place or Hinton's Pine Valley. Schedules are busy, and this is still in the planning stages. The 10:30 activity slots will be filled regardless of what works out, I will fill any empty time slots with our regular activities.
Saturday August 12th At 10:30 it's science time! Hopefully we'll get to do this outside but we've got table clothes in case we can't. We will be making something called Elephant's Toothpaste. Scientifically speaking we'll be causing an Exothermic Reaction! If that's not exciting enough for you don't worry - we're going to have a race! I should warn you, things might get a bit...eruptive. At 1:00 It's Squirt and Splatter art! We missed the chance to do this last month so we'll try it again. We will have five canvases, and an armoury of paint filled water guns and water balloons! The idea is to get destructively creative and make those blank canvases works of multi-coloured art. After they've dried we'll hang them up inside! At 2:30 we'll have ice cream cones! Weather permitting we'll eat our icy cold treats outside and enjoy the weather. Otherwise we'll enjoy them inside. Page 6 NEWSLETTER TITLE
AUGUST Page 7 Saturday August 26th At 9:30 we will play a game of Lawn Darts outside - now that I know the precise rules! Sharon's Clothing will be here around 11:00 and will be here until 3:00. She will set up in the front entrance where everything will be accessible for everyone. Although this is happening at the lodge especially for us, it is not exclusive to us. This is open to friends and family and the public too, so don't worry, everyone is welcome.
Sharon's Clothing will be setting up in the front entrance Saturday, August 26th. She will be here from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm. As such, we will have a morning activity only. There will also be a demonstration on the many ways to wear a scarf, as we're steadily moving into Autumn.
*Just A Reminder... I know it sounds self explanatory but please be sure you sign up for the trips you would like to take. Having your name on the signup sheet guarantees that you'll have a spot on the bus. Please do not wait until the day of the trip, I can't do anything for you if the bus is full or has already left. You can always cancel at any time, even last minute. That way you don't miss out on outings. Page 9 NEWSLETTER TITLE
Short Story: Think Fast Pa A farmer in Florida had a large pond down by his fruit orchard. One evening he decided to go down to the pond and took a five gallon bucket to pick some fruit. As he neared the pond, he heard female voices shouting and laughing with glee. As he came closer he saw a bunch of young women skinny-dipping in the pond. He made the women aware of his presence and they all went to the deep end. One of the women shouted to him, 'We're not coming out until you leave!' The old man thought for a second and said, 'I didn't come down here to watch you ladies swim or to make you get out of the pond naked.' Holding the bucket up he said, 'I'm here to feed the alligator!'
Short Story: What's in a Name? An elderly couple has dinner at another couple's house, and after eating, the wives leave the table and go into the kitchen. The two gentlemen were talking, and one says, 'Last night we went out to a new restaurant and it was really great. I would recommend it very highly.' The other man asks, 'What is the name of the restaurant?' The first man thinks and thinks and finally asks, 'What is the name of that flower you give to someone you love? You know... The one that's red and has thorns.' 'Do you mean a rose?' 'Yes, that's the one,' replied the man. He then turns towards the kitchen and yells, 'Rose, what's the name of that restaurant we went to last night?' Page 11 NEWSLETTER TITLE
