Pastor s Column February 23 24, 2019 Give, and gifts will be given to you For the measure with which you measure will in return be measured out to you. Our Gospel reading this weekend is a continuation of Our Lord s Sermon on the Mount according to St. Luke. Jesus teachings are counter-cultural. His more benign sayings have made their way into our vocabulary as examples of the highest standards by which to live. For instance, there is the Golden Rule, Do to others as you would have them do to you. Others have become phrases that represent what most would consider to be going above and beyond, such as, To the person who strikes you on one cheek, offer the other one as well, and from the person who takes your cloak, do not withhold even your tunic, which in our everyday language have become, Turn the other cheek, and give someone the shirt off your back. Some are dismissed out of hand as impossible to follow even by many who would consider themselves to be good Catholics. Who in their right mind would love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, or give to everyone who asks of you, and from the one who takes what is yours not demand it back? The key to understanding this difficult teaching is that we are called to be like God. Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful. Mercy is something which goes beyond justice and fairness. Mercy is giving someone what they need, not what they deserve. In St. Matthew s version of the Sermon on the Mount Jesus says, Be perfect, just as your heavenly Father is perfect. And the perfection that Jesus is talking about is the perfection of love, which is holiness. Jesus is not talking about romantic love or familial love but rather that love which is an act of the will, to choose to want and to work for the good of the other, for the sake of the other, no strings attached. If you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners do the same. Instead we must be like God who is kind to the unjust and the wicked. Our Christian ethic is something positive. It does not consist in not doing things (all those thou shalt nots ), but in doing the right thing, and on doing the extra thing. Our Gospel passage ends with Jesus talking about the importance of giving. Give, and gifts will be given to you For the measure with which you measure will in return be measured out to you. This weekend is Announcement Weekend for the 2019 Annual Catholic Appeal. Every Sunday throughout the Diocese of Brooklyn, in 186 parishes similar to St. Mark and St. Margaret Mary, the faithful come together to renew their relationship with the Lord. But 365 days out of the year, members of our diocesan family and our own parish family continue to answer God s call to love one another in ways that continuously respond to this renewal. Last year both St. Mark and St. Margaret Mary were among the top 10 parishes in the percentage of donations exceeding our respective goals, providing support to Catholic Education which benefits St. Mark Catholic Academy, to Faith Formation which benefits our Religious Education program, to Youth Ministry which enables our own Youth Ministry program, to Catholic Charities and Migration Services which supports our St. Vincent DePaul group and our Ukrainian and Russian language Masses, to Vocations for the formation of our future priests, Care for Retired Priests, and many other worthy endeavors. And the monies in excess of our goals come back to us directly to help pay for things like our new security cameras and votive candles and for greatly needed repairs. The theme for this year s Appeal is Faith and Good Works. As missionary disciples, we are encouraged to share our faith with the world by giving love and compassion. The Annual Catholic Appeal is the primary vehicle for raising the necessary funds that will allow our community to share our gifts with others. I hope that you will join me in continuing our tradition of grateful sacrifice by praying for and participating in the 2019 Annual Catholic Appeal. Fr. Bob
