Jorge Gutierrez 12pm Jane Rockwell 5:30pm Parishioners DO NO HARM We listen quite a while before we get to the punch line of the first reading today: even though it would be an easy thing to do, David will not harm the anointed one of the Lord. We, of course, know that Jesus is the Messiah, the anointed one of God, but the Bible uses this term for many different people. It is scripture s way of indicating who has been chosen by God for a special place and mission in salvation history. In today s Gospel, Jesus presents a greatly enlarged list of those who, as children of God, we should not harm, but love instead: our enemies, those who curse us or do us harm, those who owe us money, the ungrateful, the wicked. The point of Jesus teaching is not to encourage these kinds of behaviors in others, but rather to form us in the image of our heavenly Father by increasing our opportunities to love unconditionally, expecting no return; to be merciful and forgiving, even when it would be easier not to. Benediction Friday, March 1 5pm Mission Church 2019 ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL DIOCESE OF SAN DIEGO But since you excel in everything in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in complete earnestness and in the love we have kindled in you see that you also excel in this grace of giving. 2 Corinthians 8:7. Each year at this time the Diocese of San Diego invites all parishes to participate in the Annual Catholic Appeal (ACA). This is our opportunity to support the work of the local church at both the Diocesan and Parish levels. Once again Mission San Diego has been accessed a goal of $85,000. Thanks to your generosity, we have been able to reach this goal in the past and we are confident that with your help we will be able to reach our goal once again this year. All money that is received over our goal will come back to the parish. Perhaps you have noticed some of the recent improvements around our campus (lighting, signage, pavers, planters). We will continue to make such improvements over the next several years as we enhance the beauty and safety of our property. Fr. Bill Springer and Fr. Billy Zondler, our two wonderful Associate Pastors, join me in asking for your support this year. The success of this annual appeal, which is themed Responding to God s Grace, is essential to maintain the good work that continues to take place at our Diocesan Offices such as Vocations and Seminary Formation, Religious Education, Catholic Education and Tuition Assistance, Youth and Young Adult Ministry, Family Life Services, Catholic Charities, Prison Ministry and the Ongoing Education and Formation of Clergy, just to name a few. Registered parishioners have now received a mailing that included a cover letter, ACA handout and pledge form. We ask you to prayerfully consider how you are able to help us reach our goal. Please return your pledge form in the Sunday collection basket or to the parish office at your earliest convenience. You may also pledge online at www.giving.sdcatholic.org. There will also be ACA pledge forms in the Church and Gift Shop for those not registered with the parish. As I am sure you will agree Mission San Diego holds a very special place in all our hearts. During this jubilee year we encourage you to participate in our various activities and events. It is a privilege to serve you here at the Mission. Thank you for your support and goodness and I wish to assure you of our ongoing prayers and remembrance each time we gather at the Lord s Table. Fr. Peter M. Escalante, Pastor

Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time, February 24, 2019 Page 5 What is National Catholic Sisters Week? NCSW is an annual celebration that takes place from March 8-14. Created to honor women religious, it is a series of events that instruct, enlighten and bring greater focus to the lives of these incredible women. It s our chance to recognize all they have done for us. It s also our hope that as more young women learn about women religious, more will choose to follow their example. What follows is a prayer we can all pray in thanksgiving for all they have done for us. Loving and Gracious God, You express your love by putting special people in our lives and today we thank you for a very special group, the Catholic Sisters you have given to the Church. They fulfill a unique role, devoting their lives to building the Kingdom of God here on Earth. We ask you to bless all women religious during this Year of Consecrated Life. Guide them, strengthen them, sustain them. Shower them with your grace. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit, both now and forever. Amen. The Mission Spanish Bible Study group will include in their Saturday gatherings preparation for Divine Mercy Sunday. Join them Saturdays in the Alcalá Room at 4pm. Loose Change Collection, March 2/3 All loose change placed in the collection basket that weekend will be sent to the Holy Family Food Bank. Thank you also for your donations of food, diapers, and paper products.
