Generic and specific authority 3. Things that are expedient 4. Respecting the silence of the Scriptures 3 4 Introduction In the past, we learned that Jesus universal church refers to the assembly of people in the world that He saves, both living and dead When we think of His church, we must think people instead of anything else like institution or building The New Testament refers to both the universal church and a local church 5 What Is A Local Church? A local church is an assembly of Christians who agree to worship and work together in a specific location Local churches are not working units of the universal church Individual Christians are the working units of the universal church Failing to understand the nature of a local church will lead us to pervert its organization and work as so many do even among churches of Christ 6

Voluntarily Join Voluntarily Join Act 9:26 When he came to Jerusalem, he was trying to associate with the disciples; but they were all afraid of him, not believing that he was a disciple. Act 9:27 But Barnabas took hold of him and brought him to the apostles and described to them how he had seen the Lord on the road, and that He had talked to him, and how at Damascus he had spoken out boldly in the Act 9:28 And he was with them, moving about freely in Jerusalem, speaking out boldly in the name of the Lord. name of Jesus. 7 8 Composition 1Co 1:1 Paul, called as an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, and Sosthenes our brother, 1Co 1:2 To the church of God which is at Corinth, to those who have been sanctified in Christ Jesus, saints by calling, with all who in every place call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, their Lord and ours: Composition 1Th 1:1 Paul and Silvanus and Timothy, To the church of the Thessalonians in God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ: Grace to you and peace. 9 10 Number Rom 16:16 Greet one another with a holy kiss. All the churches of Christ greet you. Gal 1:2 and all the brethren who are with me, To the churches of Galatia: Luk 8:15 "But the seed in the good soil, these are the ones who have heard the word in an honest and good heart, and hold it fast, and bear fruit with perseverance. Rom 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. 11 12

Act 11:23 Then when he arrived and witnessed the grace of God, he rejoiced and began to encourage them all with resolute heart to remain true to the Lord; Act 11:24 for he was a good man, and full of the Holy Spirit and of faith. And considerable numbers were brought to the Lord. Act 11:25 And he left for Tarsus to look for Saul; Act 11:26 and when he had found him, he brought him to Antioch. And for an entire year they met with the church and taught considerable numbers; and the disciples were first called Christians in Antioch. 13 14 Act 19:1 It happened that while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul passed through the upper country and came to Ephesus, and found some disciples. Act 19:2 He said to them, "Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?" And they said to him, "No, we have not even heard whether there is a Holy Spirit." 15 Act 19:3 And he said, "Into what then were you baptized?" And they said, "Into John's baptism." Act 19:4 Paul said, "John baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in Him who was coming after him, that is, in Jesus." Act 19:5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 16 Act 19:6 And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they began speaking with tongues and prophesying. Act 19:7 There were in all about twelve men. 17 1Co 5:1 It is actually reported that there is immorality among you, and immorality of such a kind as does not exist even among the Gentiles, that someone has his father's wife. 1Co 5:2 You have become arrogant and have not mourned instead, so that the one who had done this deed would be removed from your midst. 18

1Co 5:3 For I, on my part, though absent in body but present in spirit, have already judged him who has so committed this, as though I were present. 1Co 5:4 In the name of our Lord Jesus, when you are assembled, and I with you in spirit, with the power of our Lord Jesus, 19 1Co 5:5 I have decided to deliver such a one to Satan for the destruction of his flesh, so that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus. 1Co 5:11 But actually, I wrote to you not to associate with any so-called brother if he is an immoral person, or covetous, or an idolater, or a reviler, or a drunkard, or a swindler--not even to eat with such a one. 20 3Jn 1:9 I wrote something to the church; but Diotrephes, who loves to be first among them, does not accept what we say. 3Jn 1:10 For this reason, if I come, I will call attention to his deeds which he does, unjustly accusing us with wicked words; and not satisfied with this, he himself does not receive the brethren, either, and he forbids those who desire to do so and puts them out 3Jn 1:11 Beloved, do not imitate what is evil, but what is good. The one who does good is of God; the one who does evil has not seen God. of the church. 21 22 Rev 3:1 "To the angel of the church in Sardis write: He who has the seven Spirits of God and the seven stars, says this: 'I know your deeds, that you have a name that you are alive, but you are dead. Rev 3:2 'Wake up, and strengthen the things that remain, which were about to die; for I have not found your deeds completed in the sight of My God. 23 Rev 3:3 'So remember what you have received and heard; and keep it, and repent. Therefore if you do not wake up, I will come like a thief, and you will not know at what hour I will come to you. Rev 3:4 'But you have a few people in Sardis who have not soiled their garments; and they will walk with Me in white, for they are worthy. 24

Can Be Saved Outside of A Local Church Act 8:35 Then Philip opened his mouth, and beginning from this Scripture he preached Jesus to him. Act 8:36 As they went along the road they came to some water; and the eunuch *said, "Look! Water! What prevents me from being baptized?" Can Be Saved Outside of A Local Church Act 8:37 [And Philip said, "If you believe with all your heart, you may." And he answered and said, "I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God."] Act 8:38 And he ordered the chariot to stop; and they both went down into the water, Philip as well as the eunuch, and he baptized him. 25 26 Can Be Saved Outside of A Local Church Act 8:39 When they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord snatched Philip away; and the eunuch no longer saw him, but went on his way rejoicing. Has Earthly Organization Act 14:23 When they had appointed elders for them in every church, having prayed with fasting, they commended them to the Lord in whom they had believed. Php 1:1 Paul and Timothy, bond-servants of Christ Jesus, To all the saints in Christ Jesus who are in Philippi, including the overseers and deacons: 27 28 Has Earthly Organization 1Pe 5:2 shepherd the flock of God among you, exercising oversight not under compulsion, but voluntarily, according to the will of God; and not for sordid gain, but with eagerness; 1Pe 5:3 nor yet as lording it over those allotted to your charge, but proving to be examples to the flock. Can Be Divided 1Co 1:10 Now I exhort you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all agree and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be made complete in the same mind and in the same judgment. 1Co 1:11 For I have been informed concerning you, my brethren, by Chloe's people, that there are quarrels among you. 29 30

Can Be Divided 1Co 1:12 Now I mean this, that each one of you is saying, "I am of Paul," and "I of Apollos," and "I of Cephas," and "I of Christ." 1Co 1:13 Has Christ been divided? Paul was not crucified for you, was he? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul? 1Co 11:19 For there must also be factions among you, so that those who are approved may become evident among you. 31 Affected By Death Php 1:21 For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain. Php 1:22 But if I am to live on in the flesh, this will mean fruitful labor for me; and I do not know which to choose. Php 1:23 But I am hard-pressed from both directions, having the desire to depart and be with Christ, for that is very much better; Php 1:24 yet to remain on in the flesh is more necessary for your sake. 32 Nature of A Local Church 1.
