Page 2 Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Pastor s Page Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, BETTER LATE THAN NEVER (I HOPE) The last several weeks have been strange, even by my standards. Preaching against the assisted suicide bill and the Supreme Court s validation of same-gender marriages led to a firestorm of criticism, walk-outs, and even heckling, so much so that I realized that something has gone off the rails. Why would so many professing Catholics be outraged by the Church s position on topics which only a few years ago would have been presumptive no-brainers? Clearly, I thought, everyone knows that same sex unions do not have the same fecundity as male-female unions, and allowing physicians to actively kill patients is morally reprehensible. But these days, the People of God frequently choose to oppose or ignore Church teaching on any number of topics, and they re not shy about it. How did we ever get here? It s hard to say for certain. We might blame pop culture, I suppose, or demographic changes, or poor catechesis or any number of potential factors. I suspect it s a combination of things, and I m more than willing to accept my fair share of the blame, because in retrospect, I doubt that I ve spent enough time explaining Church doctrine. It usually only comes up in the confessional, in counseling, or during specific classes, so it appears that we now have a significant disconnect between the Magisterium and folks in the pews. How do we get back on track? For people who have firmly decided that the Church is wrong, I don t know that we can do anything. Docility to the Holy Spirit is lacking in these cases, and praying for our dissenting brothers and sisters is probably all we can do. For those who have given their wholehearted consent to Church teaching and have accepted it as guided by Christ, no additional catechesis is needed. But I m beginning to think that the number of people who believe and trust Christ s Church but wrestle with certain doctrines is fairly large, and it s to these conscientious, sincere, struggling people that I want to direct more effort, both in preaching and teaching. We have already implemented a major part of that effort by subscribing the parish to Symbolon, an extensive online catechetical resource available to all parishioners. Instructions on signing up are in the bulletin. It s a great way to get reintroduced to solid, basic Catholic doctrine. We ll also be including more opportunities for catechesis throughout the year, putting together new series of talks both in the Fall and Spring, so keep an eye out for those as we develop them. I ll also use the Pastor s Page more frequently to discuss these topics in greater depth, so keep an eye out for that. Where appropriate, we ll also attempt to address such issues homiletically, but realize that, in deference to parents with small children, we re not always as free to speak as frankly and directly as we might prefer. At the end of the day, nothing we do can ease everyone s qualms, but at least we ll have made a good faith effort to more clearly and completely articulate Church teaching. May all receive it in good faith with open and willing hearts. Fr. Bruce

There could have been an interior conflict for them. By instructing the people in such a way, they knew that they would take it as an invitation to eat. In fact, such a suggestion is not made if there is not food to offer them. Nonetheless, without considering their own feelings, they followed the instructions of Jesus. S.C.
