Kindergarten-2nd October 31 November 1, 2015 Malachi 3:10, Matt. 19:16-30, Matt. 25:31-36, Mark 12:41-44 and 2 Corinthians 9:7; Matt. 6:33 Connect Time (15 minutes): Five minutes after the service begins, split kids into groups and begin their activity. Large Group (30 minutes): Begin 20 minutes after the service starts. Model what it looks like to be engaged in large group. Generosity God calls his family to be generous. Today we re talking about generosity, and how it s an important part of being close to Jesus! Generosity can relate to money, like in today s Bible story, but it can also mean giving away time, energy, talents, etc. Small Group (15 minutes): Keep kids in small groups until parents arrive. If you all have extra time at the end, you can review the video and songs together. As kids leave, remind them to show their parents the heart puzzle piece of paper they have. You can show them the group s puzzle too! God says a lot about generosity. To prepare, read some passages and ask him to show you his heart toward money and giving. Here are some stories to start with: Malachi 3:10, Matthew 6:21, Matthew 19:16-30, Matthew 25:31-36, Mark 12:41-44 and 2 Corinthians 9:7.

GOAL: Connect Time is all about engaging kids in an activity that allows them to connect with each other right away while simultaneously piquing their curiosity for Large Group and preparing their minds for what they re going to hear. GIVE TO WIN *Split kids into small groups for this activity. Have groups sit on the outskirts of an open area, and give each group a plastic container (use a small group bin). Give each group a stack of 20 papers. Tell them to work together and crumple up each piece of paper into a ball, then put it in their container. Give groups a few minutes to crumble their paper. (If a previous service has already crumpled up paper balls, you can skip this part.) Explain to kids that the point of this game is to fill up other group s containers with paper balls, and end up with no balls in their own container! To win the game, you must have the least, not the most! Have each group stand, and on your mark, let them all start taking balls from their own container and race to put them in other team s containers. Since all the teams will be putting balls in each other s containers continuously, kids will have to keep getting rid of balls in their container over and over again! Play music and let kids play for about 10 minutes. When time is up, count the balls in each group s container. The one with the least is the winner! CONNECT After the game is finished, have small groups sit down, and answer these questions: o If you had to give away one thing to someone special, what would it be? o Is it hard to give things away, or easy? Why? Before you go to Large Group, you can ask kids how their week went. You can also remind kids of the expectations for Large Group behavior: (1) be kind, (2) listen when somebody speaks, and (3) follow the leader s instructions.

Goal: Kids will (1) understand what it means to be generous, (2) recognize why we are called to be generous and (3) identify one way to be generous Why? Generosity is a vital part of following Jesus. We want kids to understand what generosity looks like, and how they can do it in their own lives! Tip: The puzzle piece activity is a great way for kids to come up with specific ways to be generous. We want kids to walk away with a tangible way they can be generous this week! REVIEW THE STORY 1. What does it mean to be generous? (to give things away even when we don t have to, giving more than what s expected) 2. How was Jesus generous? (he gave up his life to save us) 3. Why can it be hard to be generous? (Like the rich young ruler, we want to keep our stuff, we might love our stuff more than Jesus) 4. What does generosity show Jesus, even if we don t have much to give? (That we love him more than we love our things, or money.) 5. What can we give besides money? (Help kids come up with things like giving time, helping others, sharing, etc.) MAKE IT PERSONAL Give each kid a puzzle piece (each group has one team puzzle). On it, have them write/draw (1) What s the thing you re really going to give this week and (2) who will you give it to? Put the puzzle together and share ways you re planning to be generous. *Pray together, asking God to make us brave enough to be generous this week. Then give each a piece of paper with a heart puzzle printed on it Have them write or draw their idea in one of the pieces. Then remind them that being generous isn t something we do once it s something we keep on doing every time we see a need. See if they can come up with 4 other ways to share what they have and write them in the other puzzle pieces in each of the 4 corners. (If not, they can just color it in.) Give kids a coloring page. If you still have extra time, play the Connect Time game again! You could play it with a twist this time, and put all the balls in the middle of the room. Have kids go to the center and then put paper balls in the other containers.

1 Kids will be doing a special hand motion whenever you say the word generous in today s script, so make sure to emphasize that word whenever you say it. Kids this age may not have much money to give, but they do have other things! Emphasize that we can be generous by spending time with people, helping others without receiving anything in return, giving away toys, or even making things for people! *Click to play intro music WELCOME AND INTRO Hey everybody! Welcome to Kids Club. It s fantastic to see you all today. I bet you all had a lot of fun playing that game with the paper balls. You had to get as many balls as you could in your own container right? (Let kids respond, No! ) Oh no, I ve got it all wrong! Can someone tell me how you really won the game? (Let a kid respond with how they won the game by having the least balls in their container, etc.) That s right, instead of trying to keep as many balls as you could, you had to give away as many balls as you could! Let s talk about giving something else away. Everybody picture in your head something that s really special to you. It could be a toy, or a video game. anything that s important to you! (Give kids a few seconds to think silently.) All right, does everybody have something in your head? Now turn to a friend, and tell them what you would give away. (Give kids a minute to discuss.) Good job guys! I think if I had to give one thing to one person, I would give (share your response to that question; mention how much you care about the person to whom you d give the gift and why you want that person to be happy). WHAT IT MEANS TO BE GENEROUS Today we re going to talk about what it means to be generous. Does anybody know what the word generous means? (Let a few kids respond.) Good job! Being generous is when we give things away, even when we don t have to. To help us remember what it means to be generous, we re going to learn a special motion to go along with it! Whenever I say the word generous or generosity today, I want you to do this motion with your hands (Demonstrate this motion: with palms facing upward, move your hands in a flat, circular motion in front of you.) Let s practice! Whenever I say generous, you (Let kids respond with the new motion.)

Good job! Now we re going to talk about someone who was the most generous person to ever live. Does anybody know his name? (Let kids respond, Jesus! ) Yes, Jesus! He gave things away all the time, and he didn t even have to! He gave away much more than he needed, and he loved to do it. The cool thing is, he didn t just give away his favorite stuff, or his money. We re going to watch a video to see all the ways that Jesus was generous. As you watch, try to figure out why Jesus wants us to be generous. VIDEO: God s Story / Generosity So why does Jesus want us to be generous? (Let kids respond.) That s right! When we re generous, it shows Jesus how much we love him. When we give to others, we show that we want to be like Jesus. DIFFERENT WAYS TO BE GENEROUS There are so many ways to be generous! It s not just about giving away money. It can mean giving away your time, or your help, or even being kind to someone! Let s play a game to see all the different ways we can give to people. I m going to show a picture on the screen and tell you a way to be generous, and if you think it s a good way to be generous, then stand up and do our special generous hand motion. If it s not a good way to be generous, then stay seated and cross your arms in front of you, like this. (Demonstrate for kids.) Okay, are you ready? (Click through the following pictures, describing each statement and letting kids respond.) Money find some money on the ground and give it to a friend who needs it Money (again) find some money on the ground, and keep it to yourself Time help a grownup with cleaning, instead of playing Things share your favorite toy with a younger sibling Things (again) never let anyone play with your toys Friends invite somebody you don t know very well to come hang out with your friends GENEROSITY CAN BE HARD It s not always easy being generous. (Click to show picture of the rich young ruler from the video.) Remember the guy from the video was sad, because he didn t want to give away all his stuff. Why was it hard for him to be generous? (Let kids respond.) Yep. He wanted to keep all his stuff. He loved all his stuff MORE than he loved Jesus. Is that what Jesus wants for us? (Let kids respond, No ) No, Jesus wants us to love HIM more than we love our stuff. GENEROSITY CAN BE EASY Jesus talked about another person in the video we watched. Do you remember the woman who gave just a few coins? (Click to show the woman who gave a lot from the video.) Even though she only gave a little, was she being generous? (Let kids respond Yes ) Yes, she was! She barely had any money, so a few coins were actually a lot for her. And she still gave it, because she loved Jesus more than she loved her money. Let s read a verse that shows exactly what the poor woman was doing. If you want to read along with me, say the words out loud:

SLIDE: Matthew 6:33 Seek the Kingdom of God [a] above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need. So if we seek God first, and live generously, than he will give us everything we need! Let s say that out loud a few times together, so we remember it. (Lead kids in repeating it out loud.) RESPOND Think about all the things you have: money, time, things, friends, anything! Now think about one thing you could give away and one person who needs it. It might be what you thought about at the beginning of Large Group, but it may be something new. We re going to take a couple minutes to sit silently and talk to God. As you sit, ask him what you can give away this week to practice generosity. (Give kids a minute of silence. Then wrap up in prayer.) Here s the most important thing about being generous: We can be generous, because Jesus gave up everything for us! He gave everything he had, even his own life, so that we could be rescued and be close to him. If you re glad that he was generous enough to give up his life for you, give me a big thumbs up! (Let kids respond.) WORSHIP Another way we can be generous is by giving our time and energy to God by worshipping him! Let s watch this music video about how Jesus love beats anything that we re afraid of! Then we ll sing about Jesus wants us to join him Music Video: Love Beats Fear Music Video: Come With Me *Dismiss kids to small groups
