Dear Peter, The Valand File is incredible! I can't believe how much information you have. I want to join the Whitlock Association and am sending you a check for two years. I would be happy if you added my relatives to your list ofwhitlocks. At this point I don't know who my relative is descended from but will send you what I know and then what I think. I have enclosed copies of two papers which were in my father's possession and which started me on this quest to find my elusive ancestors. The first was written in pencil by a person unknown to me and has the names or initials and birth dates of the family of Thomas Whitlock. I filled in the initials that I learne 1,. Thomas Whitlock born December 1, 1791 Mary C. Holland born Sep.tember 27, 1796 Susann born June 9, 18311, Isabella T. born January 20, 1833} (.. John Thomas born October 14, 1835 M. E. (female) born October 30, 1840 L. The second one I believe was written by my grandfather. Thomas and Mary C. were married December 4, 1828 by James Fife who was a minister at Lickinghole Baptist Church. (Goochland County Marriage Bonds and Ministers Returns 1816-1854 compiled and indexed by Thomas P. Hughes Jr. and Jewel B. Standefer) Mary C. Holland was married previously and had a daughter Judith R. Holland born about 1819 or 1820. Judith was married to Christopher Hudson on January 17,1837. Mary C. Whitlock named as mother of Judith and Thomas Whitlock as Sec. (Goochland County Marriage Bonds and Ministers Returns 1816-1854 compiled and indexed by Thomas P. Hughes Jr. and Jewel B. Standefer) I belive Christopher Hudson was the son of Nancy Holland and George Hudson and was born in 1794. I have no record of Mary C. Holland's first marriage and her maiden name. I wonder if she was born a Holland?.#~ John Thomas Whitlock married Belle Varina Traylor on August 29, 1871 in Richmon ( Marriage Certificate) They had two sons Howard Lansing born in Richmond April 11, 1872 and Thomas Coleman born in Charlottesvile January? 1874. Belle died in May 1880 of chlorofor (Mortality Schedule 1880 Albemarle County)
I think I could be a descendent of Grizel Coleman Whitlock because: My grandfather and father were named Thomas Coleman Whitlock My grandfather's brother Howard Lansing Whitlock named his first son Coleman Whitlock. ( 1900 VA Census) My sister is named Alice Coleman Whitlock I always wondered where Coleman came from and this would explain it. Grizel Coleman Whitlock had four sons: John (Ann Logan) Thomas John James Mitchell two daughters married in 1792 married Susannah Cawthorne 1782 a possible fit married Cicely Hix Apr 25,1791 IGI has a son Thomas born in 1792 a possible fit if Dec. 1, 1791 IS wrong William (Mary Roundtree) John (Jonathan) James Thomas These names came from DAR application #679561 and I think the children were all born in Union, S.C. because the couples marriage was in the Douglas Register but there were no christenings name Thomas (Mary Williamson) John born 1760 Thomas born 1762 either ofthese could be a fit but this couple moved out of Goochland County in 1767 (V aland File) Robert (Agnes Alford) Nannie daughter b 1763 (Valand) only information on this man N ow I am beginning to wonder if Thomas Whitlock (Dec. 1,1791) was born in GoocWand County. Maybe he wasn't in which case any ofthe above fits could be his father. If he was, the only male Whitlocks listed in the Property Tax List of GoocWand County for the years 1790-1793 were Mitchell and a John. I don't know which John this is. Isn't it amazing that out offour sons, three had sons named John and Thomas and two had sons named James. This is where I stand right now and wonder if you can shed any light on this man. I would be thrilled to find out who he is. l Sincerely (, 20Q~rhw.'cC(@J)
