THE SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT DECEMBER 9, 2018 8:00 A.M. AND 10:15 A.M. HOLY EUCHARIST OUR MISSION: We are called to be disciples of Christ, revealing His Life, Love and Light to the World. OUR VISION: St. Bartholomew s Episcopal Church is a radically welcoming, inclusive faith family sharing and teaching the love of Jesus Christ through our worship, actions and outreach: transforming ourselves and the world.

Welcome! Your presence with us is a perfect gift from God. Thank you for being here! We pray that you are fed personally and spiritually here in Word and Sacrament. If today is your first visit, please introduce yourself at the Welcome banner on the patio and say hello one of the clergy. After receiving communion you are invited to bring your prayer needs to an Order of St. Luke s member. They can be identified by their blue stoles. Please wear your name tag. (Order forms are in the narthex). Please silence your mobile phone. The liturgy we celebrate this Advent season comes from the Scottish Liturgy 1982 and is well suited for this time of preparation. It has been authorized for use at St. Bartholomew s Episcopal Church, Poway, California by the Bishop of San Diego. Music used in this bulletin is reprinted in accordance with Onelicense.net #A-708705, The Rite Song, and CCLI license no. 3011258. PRELUDE Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme J.S. The Lord shall cause His glorious voice to be heard, and ye shall gladness of heart. LIGHTING OF THE ADVENT WREATH Reader Reader Reader Reader Jesus said, I am the light of the world. We are watching for the light, watching for God s beacon of dazzling light to shepherd us home. In the darkest night, our eyes search for glimmers of light. We are watching for the light, watching for God s beacon of dazzling light to shepherd us home. In our darkest night of despair, our spirits long for the dawn of hope and we remember the words of the psalmist: Restore us, O God! Smile your blessing smile: that will be our salvation. Today we light the candles of hope and peace. The Advent Wreath is lit. Please stand for the processional. 2

SERMON THE REV. CANON ALLISYN THOMAS A period of meditative silence follows. Please stand as able. THE NICENE CREED We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. 7

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE (Sung by all after each intercession) BLESSING OF PRAYER QUILTS CONCLUDING COLLECT God of peace, who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep: Ohelp us strive in all goodness to do your will and to be what you would have us be; through him to whom be glory for ever, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. CONFESSION OF SIN Deacon God is love, and we are his children, There is no room for fear in love. We love because he loved us first. Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith. God our Father, we confess to you and to our fellow members in the Body of Christ that we have sinned in thought, word and deed, and in what we have failed to do. We are truly sorry. Forgive us our sins, and deliver us from the power of evil. For the sake of your Son who died for us, Jesus Christ, our Lord. God, who is both power and love, forgive us and free us from our sins, heal and strengthen us by his Spirit and raise us to new life in Christ our Lord. Amen. THE PEACE The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. 8

OFFERTORY SENTENCE After sharing the peace of the risen Christ with one another, please be seated. OFFERTORY ANTHEM (10:15 AM) Sleepers, Wake! Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847) Sleepers wake! A voice is calling, it is the watchman on the walls: Thou city of Jerusalem! For lo! The Bridegroom comes! Arise and take your lamps! Hallelujah! Awake! His kingdom is at hand! Go forth to meet your Lord! DOXOLOGY (Sung by all) Please stand as able. 9

The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. THE GREAT THANKSGIVING (From Scottish Liturgy 1982, rev. 1996) Worship and praise belong to you, God our maker As children of your redeeming purpose who await with eager longing the fulfilment of all things in the coming of your Son, we offer you our praise, as we sing: SANCTUS (Sung by all) Santo, Santo, Santo Glory and thanksgiving be to you, most loving Father. Through Jesus Christ our Lord, with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honor and glory be to you, Lord of all ages, world without end. Amen. As our Savior has taught us, we now pray, 10

(8:00 AM) Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. (10:15 AM) (Sung by all) THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD The living bread is broken for the life of the world.
