Let us love one another as Jesus loves us. Jesus said, You are my friends if you follow this commandment to love one another. May we be a community where this kind of love lives and grows. Jesus said, I have called you to bear the fruit of love. Help us to be fruitful, productive people who abide in your love and share that love with others. (By Rev. Dan Schifeling, Based on John 15) The Opening Prayer (In Unison) God we thank you for the gift of Your love, and for the gift of human love. We love because You first loved us. Heal those places within us that keep us from giving of ourselves in love. Lead us to love without conditions or limits. And as we worship You this day, fill us with the Holy Spirit so that we might love you, one another, and the whole world deeply and truly, just as You love us. Amen. (By Flora Litt and Wayne Irwin) *The Opening Hymn No. 468 The King Of Love My Shepherd Is Children go to Jr. Worship All children aged four and over go to Jr. Worship with the leader. There is a nursery for younger children. The New Testament Lesson: 1 Corinthians 13: 1-13 If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. 3 If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.
4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. 8 Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. 9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part, 10 but when completeness comes, what is in part disappears. 11 When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me. 12 For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known. 13 And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love. The Chancel Bells Shout To The Lord arr. by K. McChesney The Prayers of The People The Lord s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen. The Gospel Lesson: John 12: 1-8 Six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazarus lived, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. 2 Here a dinner was given in Jesus honor. Martha served, while Lazarus was among those reclining at the table with him. 3 Then Mary took about a pint of pure nard, an expensive perfume; she poured it on Jesus feet and wiped his feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. 4 But one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, who was later to betray him, objected, 5 Why wasn t this perfume sold and the money given to the poor? It was worth a year s wages. 6 He did not say this because he cared about the poor but because he was a thief; as keeper of the money bag, he used to help himself to what was put into it. 7 Leave her alone, Jesus replied. It was intended that she should save this perfume for the day of my burial. 8 You will always have the poor among you, but you will not always have me. Live Like You Were Dying: Love Deeper Sermon Notes John 12: 1-8 What would we do, if like the country song says, we were to Live Like We Were Dying? How could we love deeper? When I hear the word love, I think But I can love more deeply when I: 1. Do the 2. Do the 3. Do the So, may we share extravagant, deep love this week and always.
