Holy Spirit Catholic Church June 17, 2018 From The Pastor s Desk whether we are at home or away. For we must all appear before the judgement seat of Christ, so that each may receive recompense, according to what he did in the body, whether good or evil. 2 Cor. 5:9-10 Who is the real judge? Is it really true that God has a big book or maybe even a fast computer, where God keeps track of all of the good and bad things we did? Then, when we come in front of God for the judgement, God asks for a printout of our lives? If the good outweighs the evil, then we get into heaven. If there is a little too much evil, then we go to purgatory; and if there is altogether much too much evil, then we take a trip to the unmentionable place? When we look into the Scriptures or into the spiritual history of the Church, this doesn t seem to be the way that things are going to turn out. After all, didn t Jesus tell the story about the landowner who went into the town to find workers for the vineyard. Some worked all day, some only part of the day and some even for an hour. Yet, they were all given the same wages. So the scorecard notion of judgement doesn t seem to work in this case. Who is real judge? Isn t it ourselves? Aren t we the ones who bring judgment on ourselves. God doesn t need to keep score. All that God has to do is to look at our hearts to tell if we have been faithful to the great commandment of love. If our hearts have become hard and bitter, letting no one in, and going out to no one, then God will have the answer about our lives. On the other hand, if God sees our hearts have become welcoming and open to those who need us, then that answer will be plain to see also. We are the ones who create our own judgment as we go through life. We don t have to worry that God is lurking around every corner trying to catch us up like some law officer. God is not concerned about playing cat and mouse with us. God is love and wants to see loving hearts in each one of us. Our daily decisions are the way we create judgment for ourselves. We are forming ourselves all the time by the choices that we make each day of our lives. On the physical level, it is very easy to see. The decisions we make about the kind and quantity of the food we eat affect the shape that our bodies take. Our decision to exercise or not exercise affects the strength and flexibility of our bodies. As we go through life, it becomes apparent to those who see us what some of our decisions have been in our choice of food, smoking, sleep and exercise. It s true that other factors such as sickness do affect the way we look and our physical abilities, but all things being equal, the person who can run marathon and the person the same age who has trouble walking up three flights of stairs have made different decisions in their lives. And so it is with the spiritual life. Our decisions to love or not to love, to give ourselves or to withhold ourselves, to be forgiving or to holds a grudge, to be compassionate or to have a hardened heart all these and many more are the judgements that we make upon ourselves. Please remember. After all is said and done in the evening of life, we shall be judged on love. Holy Spirit Catholic Church June 17, 2018 We ll be cooking up some yummy VBS summertime fun starting Monday, June 18! Parents, check in begins at 7:45 a.m. on Monday, June 18 in the gym for all registered children IF YOU WISH TO HAVE YOUR CHILD ENJOY BREAKFAST AT 8:15 a.m. Be prepared for a bit of organized chaos, as we get everyone where they re supposed to be. It s just part of the VBS charm and since the breakfast and lunch venue is new this year, well, it might be slightly more chaotic than normal We ask for your patience, however, as we muddle through the process, feeding children is a good thing! Also, be sure your children wear closed toed shoes no flip-flops because Greasy Spoon Games are gonna be a load of fun and that we have all Medical and Photography Forms signed and turned in or your children will be unable to participate until we do. That s for everyone s safety. We will have forms available on Monday for you to sign. Additionally, if you have someone other than yourself (the parent/guardian) picking up your child at the end of each VBS day, we must have that in writing and on file with the VBS Director, or your child will be spending some extra time with us. Again, for safety reasons. I trust you can understand our concern for the welfare of your precious children. If you have any questions or concerns, please see Deborah first thing Monday morning. It ll be a Top Chef week! General Registration for the 2018/19 Faith Formation continues through the month of June. You can pick up registration paperwork during the normal work week, Monday-Thursday between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. (NO FRIDAYS; it s our clean-up day!). You can contact Deborah, Devyn, Lindee or Lisa with any questions regarding Children s Faith Formation, Youth Ministry, First Communion and/or Confirmation preparation or RCIA. PLEASE NOTE: WE WILL NOT BE ACCEPTING nor DISTRIBUTING FAITH FORMATION PAPERWORK DURING THE WEEK OF VBS! We will be glad to help you once our fine dinin is done on Monday, June 25. Also, since most of the Faith Formation staff will be on vacation during the month of July in order to be rested and ready for the busy month that is August, you might want to call ahead to be sure someone is in the office to assist you with your registration needs. FAITH FORMATION CATECHISTS & TEEN AIDES: A majority of you have already been kind enough to let me know if you re coming back next year or not.thank YOU! But I m still waiting on a handful of you to respond; yes or no is fine, but I do need to hear back from you. If I haven t heard from you by July 1, I will assume you are NOT returning and look at filling the vacancy. This includes teen aides, as well, especially since I already have a waiting list. Catechist training will begin in mid-august so watch for more information in late July. And if you re interested in joining our Children s Catechetical Team, contact Deborah! We have a few spots to fill this year, and some are teaching spots (Kindergarten at 9 a.m. and 1st Grade and 6th Grade at 11 a.m.), so find out how you can serve in this vital parish ministry. The #BeGolden campaign is a rallying cry for our community to unite under the Golden Rule and remember to practice it every day, especially with those who are immigrants. It s a message of unity, civility, and empathy. We want to remind people that this isn t a political or legal issue, it s a human issue. The goal is to build awareness and educate the members of our community, so we always remember to put ourselves in other people s shoes, especially when it comes to topics like immigration. If we treat our neighbors the way we would like to be treated, we d be surprised to discover that the things we have in common far outweigh the things that divide us.
