LITURGY CORNER These Forty Days Always on the First Sunday of Lent we hear Jesus being tempted by the devil during the forty days he spent in the desert. We too are beginning a forty-day period during which we are challenged to repent and reorient ourselves toward God. We face temptations every day that distract us from following the Lord or lead us away from God. In tempting Jesus, the devil tries to prove that he, not God, was in control. Three times he tries to order Jesus to do something. More than anything, he wants Jesus to obey him. Jesus refutes the devil at every turn, and does so by asserting God s preeminence. All three times Jesus refuses the devil s taunts by quoting scripture. By invoking God, he is not just contradicting the devil s arguments, he is asserting that God precedes all else, including Satan. May our gathering together to celebrate the Eucharist inspire us and nourish us in the weeks ahead.

A 40-day journey of prayer, fasting and almsgiving, Lent is a journey that spans Ash Wednesday through Holy Week, culminating in the great celebration of Easter. As Catholics, the spiritual pillars of prayer, fasting and almsgiving guide us in daily reflection on our own lives as we strive to deepen our relationship with God and neighbor no matter where in the world that neighbor may live. Lent ultimately leads to Easter and the hope of the Resurrection. And as Catholics, we are called to share that hope with every member of our global human family. CRS Rice Bowl is Catholic Relief Services Lenten faith-in-action program. It offers opportunities for your family to engage daily with the spiritual pillars of Lent: prayer, fasting and almsgiving. And it s an opportunity for us as a parish/school to come together as a community and reflect on what it means to live out our Gospel call to go out and encounter those most in need. We hope you will take home a CRS Rice Bowl available in the vestibule. We will collect them during Holy Week. Thank you.
