Holy Week begins with next week s Palm Sunday Mass. Palm Sunday is striking for its color red evoking a reminder of Christ s blood shed on Calvary. It is also marked by the waving of our fresh palm branches and the reading of the Passion of Christ. The Passion is read on Palm Sunday and Good Friday. It is a sobering experience for those with an open heart. During Holy Week the school will host it s famous Living Stations of the Cross performed by our 8 th Graders on Monday at 2 pm and 6:45 pm and Tuesday at 2 pm. The Stations are always very well done and quite moving. We can be very proud of our students and their teachers. Holy Thursday night provides the opportunity to reflect on the gift of the Eucharist and the priesthood that Christ gave to serve the people of God. Mass is at 7 pm. Thursday night makes use of the imagery from the Last Supper, especially that of the washing of the Apostle s feet. The washing is a reminder of the mandate to serve our neighbor in love, and also a reminder that we must each be washed in the blood of the Lamb to be saved. As Christ reminds Peter during the event. Unless I wash you Peter, you will have no part in me. Holy Thursday closes with a procession of the Blessed Sacrament around the Church, reminding us that the Eucharist is truly the risen Lord with us. The reserved Eucharist is then kept on the Altar in the Chapel until about 930 pm. Persons can come and pray and be with Jesus after Mass. It recalls his night in jail. Good Friday brings another reading of the Passion from a different gospel. The service is not a Mass, but rather is a part of the continual Mass that began Holy Thursday night and will end Saturday night at the Easter Vigil. Good Friday is again awash in red, remembering the blood of Christ. At the service there is a solemn time for each of us to personally venerate the wood of the Cross, similar to our veneration of the relics of the saints, but more devotional. The Cross confronts us each differently and can be a very moving encounter if we have reflected on what God s mercy has forgiven in our life. Our service will be at 1 pm. There is also a collection on Good Friday for the Christians in the Holy Land. Please be as generous as you can! The Easter Vigil on Saturday night at 8:15 pm, (no 4pm Mass), can be an especially powerful experience for the believer. It is a long night of prayer, nearly two hours, filled with an opening fire in darkness symbolizing Christ conquering the darkness of this world, a recounting of the story of salvation through many read readings, and of course the first celebration of the Eucharist since Holy Thursday night. It is also when persons throughout the world are baptized and confirmed into the Catholic Faith. We will welcome some of our own. It is followed by a reception of punch and dessert in Bishop Hall. Join us! Consider what you might wish to attend, view our times here or at nearby parishes. And remember to be especially kind, welcoming and patient with those who may take your spot in the pew on Easter Sunday. Help me provide a place where people will want to return to St. Bernard and God. A blessed close to your Lent! Fr. Mark Vander Steeg

April 6 & 7, 2019 PAGE 3 5th Sunday in Lent For His sake I have accepted the loss of all things and I consider them so much rubbish, that I may gain Christ (PHILIPPIANS 3:8) The first commandment says that we should not put other gods before the Lord. Sharing all of our gifts, our time in prayer, our talent in charitable works and our treasure to support Church needs helps us keep God first in everything. It helps us from putting other gods before God. It helps us to use our gifts for the glory of God and not for our own honor. Religious Education News Adam Horn-R.E.
