Saint Michael the Archangel Parish Pentecost Sunday May 24, 2015 Rev. Fr. Dale A. Branson For if this endeavor or this activity is of human origin, it will destroy itself. But if it comes from God, you will not be able to destroy it; you may even find yourselves fighting against God. Changes happened quickly a er the Peace of Constan ne in 312, and the fresh air a er long persecu- on brought some crea vity. The speech that the father of the groom's family gave before dinner or the veiling or crowning of the bride (or even the spouse's arrival at the honeymoon suite) a racted a prayer of blessing. With amazing rapidity, worship was propelled out of the in mate se ng of house churches to large public gathering spaces, and some parts of the marriage ceremony began to migrate with the growing community to the new spaces. In Rome, the veiling of the bride with the customary daily headgear of a married woman became the central liturgical act, accompanied by a biblical prayer for her integrity and frui ulness. There were no vows as such (just as there are no vows to this day in the Orthodox marriage rite). In the liturgy, a er hearing John's Gospel account of the wedding at Cana, the bride was veiled and blessed, and the priest gave the kiss of peace to the husband, who then gave it to his bride. The liturgy of Rome traveled far, and everywhere it went, marriage became a church celebra on. --Rev. James Field, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co. Are you new to St. Michael the Archangel Church? May 24, 2015 Pentecost Sunday Fundraising Opportunity We now have all of the books from the Angelic Letters Series, available at the Greeters Table. To date we have raised over $7,400 dollars with the sale of this book series. Encourage your friends and family to read the books or give them away as gifts. Author and winter parishioner, Henry Ripplinger, has generously donated the books in order to help raise money for our Building Fund. You can also purchase the books during the week at the church office. Great Gift Idea Looking for a great Graduation gift? Stop by the Greeters table and purchase a beautiful Commemorative Pens. Each pen is unique and made of the Mesquite wood harvested from the property. Personalize your gift with up to 25 characters and give something that will help them remember their graduation. The cost is $50 per pen plus $5 if you choose to personalize it. Brothers and sisters, live by the Spirit and you will certainly not gratify the desire of the flesh. For the flesh has desires against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; these are opposed to each other, so that you may not do what you want. Galatians 5:16-17 Office Closed The Parish Office will be closed Monday, May 25th in observance of Memorial Day. Caution: Spirit at Work If Pentecost celebrates the gifts of the Spirit, it can tempt us to separate the Spirit from the Father and Jesus. Sometimes we think of the Father as the God of the Old Testament, Jesus as center of New Testament, and the Spirit as God of the present age, almost as if the Father and Jesus were enjoying their retirement. Actually, all three persons share one God-life. Instead of three gods debating the fate of the universe, we have one God who is over all and in all. The Spirit has been active in all ages. The prophets were empowered by the Spirit to proclaim God's word to Israel. Jesus was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit. The Spirit led Jesus into the desert at the beginning of his ministry. (Search the word "spirit" in the four gospels and it appears 75 times.) Jesus was filled with the Spirit as he preached and worked miracles. Then at Pentecost the disciples were filled with the Spirit. So what about Pentecost? It is really about using our gifts and sharing the good news. The Spirit gives us the power, courage, and energy to do this. The Spirit's gifts are meant to be shared. The prophets could not help proclaim God's message. Jesus shared all he knew with his disciples. The disciples went out to the world to spread the news of Jesus' death and resurrection. So we, too, are given gifts to be shared. The greatest gift we have been given is the news of our salvation. This feast reminds us to share that with others. We may do that by example, as when we worship together, forgive others, give to the poor or help someone in need. We can also share that news by teaching our children about God and his love for them, teaching them to pray, or sharing our faith with other adults. As we come to realize how much God has done for us and how close he is to us, we will want to share that with others. Obviously, we can't make everyone believe in Jesus. But how sad would it be if someone we know was looking for the truth and we neglected to offer it? Tom Schmidt, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.
