DIAKONIA OCT 2004 My name is Joy Morrison and I am honored to serve the Denton Area Emmaus Community as the Community Lay Director for the next year. I would like to tell you a little about myself. I have been married to Van for 35 years and we live in The Colony. Van has recently retired from the Fire Service and I work for the City ofthe Colony. We havetwo sons both married and are blessed with four adorable granddaughters. We attend The Colony Church of Christ where Van has served as a Shepherd for sixteen years. I am involved in the Caring and Sharing Ministry, Women s ministry and participate in a mentoring program. My vision for our Community this next year is to grow our Community not just in numbers, but also in service. If every one of us in the Community sponsored just one pilgrim in this next year, our Community would double in number. Our walks would be ful and we would have a waiting list what a chalenge to have. How long has it been since you sponsored someone? I ask that each of you seek ways you can serve in your local Church and in the Denton Community. In the Community you could Saturday, October 16-8:00 p.m. COMMUNITY NEWS increase your service by attending Send Offs, Candle Lights, Closings and Gatherings. Our next walk is October 14-17 at Lake Sharon. Consider participating at Send Off or Candle Light or provide agape forthe pilgrims, or commit to the prayer vigil. When I attend an Emmaus function, I leave with feelings of blessings and renewal. Fellowship is a wonderful gift of Emmaus, don t mis out on your gift. Our next gathering is November 20th at the First United Methodist Church in T he Colony. Our website has the directions and other information concerning the gathering. I encourage all of you to become more active in our Denton Area Emmaus Community so we can grow in numbers and in service. If you have any questions about how to get involved, contact any board member. Board members names and positions are listed on page 3 of this newsletter. You can also go to the website for their phone numbers and email addresses. Thank you for allowing me the blessing to serve this year as Community Lay Director. May God richly bless you on all of your Fourth Days to come! Thoughts from our Spiritual Director P A G E 2 Vacation Bible School 2004 what a blesing! Thirty plus children came to enjoy Lava Lava island and al of God s goodness this past July. Each day as I sat and talked with those children I looked into the eyes of the future leaders of our churches. Some of their stories were amazing and some made me sad. One little girl was at her third Vacation Bible School since school let out because her mother thought she needed it. They don t have a regular church home or in the girl s words, they don t go to church anywhere. One of the young boys was absolutely bored to death because that is how he sees his father act about church. Seems dad never bothers to go with him or his mother except maybe on Christmas. On the other hand there was a litle girl who cried out track four every time we plugged in the cd player. She would rush to the front of the room and just like King David, dance for the Lord God. Her enthusiasm was contagious as she would get the whole sanctuary bouncing, wiggling, twisting and jumping as we sang. And sang LOUD. Another of the children knew every song and all the motions. He was not a bit shy about teaching his crew and the rest of us. As the exhaustion passe s and I look over the names, review the pictures and play the video I find myself searching for the Church s future. Wil the Church be a babysiting service? Wil it be a place to take a nap? Or, will it be a place to enthusiastically worship and praise God by recognizing the blessings that flow upon us? I am looking for the Church to be revived! I am looking for the Denton Emmaus Community to continue to develop leaders who are enthusiastic about dancing with King David, gathering children with Jesus and proclaiming the word with Paul. If we continue to develop these leaders our churches will thrive and someday these children will stand in front of the Emmaus community and tell what these three days have meant to them and what they are going to do about it. Even the child who only attends VBS or has been trained to be bored in church has the potential to be a great church leader. But, first, we must train today s leaders to reach out to them. Let the training begin! Al to the glory of God. Blessings, Joe Zinser Spiritual Director AGAPE CORNER Banners are used throughout the weekend with each of the talks given by clergy and laity. At the moment, our community is still in need of two banners to support these all important talks. Missing banners include Previenient Grace and Sanctifying Grace. If you are a crafty type of person the community would greatly appreciate your gift of time and talent for one of these banners. It was also observed after the last walk that we are in need of additional banner poles. If you have any additional questions about the banners or poles, please contact our Agape Chairperson, Barbara Carruth at 972-724-2235 or email at bacarruth@com cast.ne t Our next walk is a Women s Walk to be held October 14-17. Your gifts of table and food agape a wonderful gift of love for our pilgrims. All is appreciated.

MAKING KINGDOM LEAD ERS I recently read the book "THE PRESENT FUTURE: SIX TOUGH QUESTIONS THE P A G E 4 CHURCH MUST ANSWER" by Reggie Mc Neal. It was a fascinating book that discussed many of the challenges and questions that face the church today. I would highly recommend the book. Mc Neal states that one of the questions the church must face is about Leadership. We oft en ask "How can we make more leaders for the church?". Mc Neal says that the tougher question is "How do we make leaders for the Kingdom?" I shared with the Board of Directors for Denton Emmaus about this thought making leaders for the local church. The stated purpose of the Walk To Emmaus "is to develop leaders for the church". This is a noble task of which you are a part of as we seek to take the leaders from the church, infuse them with a 72 Hour period of God's grace and mercies and then send them back into the fold. Do you realize that on the Walk weekend that people spend more time together as a community of believers than they probably do all year with their local church? That's why the Walk is so electric and life changing. Being in community with other believers sparks the kind of Spirit filled excitement that the church saw in Acts. 2. Its incredible to watch. I challenged the Board, and I challenge you to look at the Walk not just as developing local church leaders, but to look at it as an opportunity to launch leaders for the Kingdom. That's what Jesus calls us to do; be Kingdom people. During the Walk weekend, we have the opportunity to launch 25-30 Kingdom leaders who will go and change their city. Some will go back and work in the local church. Some may be launched into a greater realm of leadership. Some may impact whole countries becaus e of their encounter with the living Christ during the weekend. How are you participating in this vital experience? Who have you invited to be a leader for the Kingdom? Who will change the world because they attended Walk To Emmaus? We may never get to see the results-but wouldn't it be a shame to miss this opportunity to be a small part of building God's Kingdom? De Colores, Jim Drake Assistant Spiritual Director-DAEC Walk #39-Mesquite Country Emmaus S e r v a n t Te a m S e r v i c e Service on a Servant Team, either on-site or outside, is the doorway to team service. If you are new to the community, been inactive for a while, or just went on your walk, the way to inside team service starts with being on a Servant Team. Who is a Servant Team Candidate? 1. Persons who have filled out forms signifying a desire to serve on a team. 2. Persons who have been Pilgrims on walks, but have not served in any capacity yet. 3. Spouses of inside Team members. 4. Sponsors of Pilgrims on the walk they will be attending. 5. Persons in the community who have been inactive for an extended period of time. 6. Persons with experience who have a close or working relationship with the Servant Team leader. Are you a person who moved here from another community and would like to become involved again? Are you a person who had been active several years ago and served on teams in the Dallas community, or another nearby community, but for good and valid reasons has not been able to participate recently? Are you a person who wants to be involved, but just hasn't made the right connection yet? Are

It was an event for all Trietsch men who had attended a Walk no matter where or when. There were old friends and new Pilgrims, extraordinary fellowship, Communion, music, and (can you believe this Food). I would like everyone to know that having a weekend event like this does not need the sanction of the Board or anyone else. If you would like to hold such an event, do so. We would love to know but its not required. The next Community wekend event is Denton Area Women s Walk #14. The Emce for Candlelight will be Dave Andrus. Make plans to be there and support all of the ladies attending Walk #14 and meet old friends. If you would like to be the Emcee at Candlelight in the coming months for Walks 15, 16 or 17 e-mail or call me. We will furnish you with a script the Board Rep will help and you get to be close to the music. There will be a Community Gathering at First United Methodist Church on November 20 th. There are openings for a church to sponsor a Gathering in January. If you would like ideas on holding a gathering or a special event, give me a call. DeColores Steve Hines - Weekend Events e-mail: shines57@att.net Phone: 972-625-2845 "Here I Am, Lord" is a modern hymn, written in the ear ly 1980s by Dan Schutt e, dur ing his time as a member of the St. Louis Jesuits. Combining the stor y of the call of Samuel (1 Samuel 3) with that of the call of Isaiah (Isaiah 6), "Here I Am, Lord" is an invitation to service. The Lord is calling; how will we respond? Will we make excuses, like Moses? Flee, like Jonah? Or say, in the words of Isaiah, "Here I am!" To say, "Here I am!" is to agree to be Jesus' disciple, even before being told the specific task or message our Lord has in mind for us. The hymn is a wonderful affirmation of acceptance, trust, and volunteerism. In singing this hymn, we ask for the Lord's help ("I will go, Lord, if you lead me"), and recommit ourselves to His pur poses. Schutte says he wrote "Here I Am, Lord" at the request of "a friend of mine some 20 years ago (who) asked me to write a song in two days to celebrate a deacon ordination. It Takes a Servant s Heart. Remember your walk? You may not have even noticed that as you moved from room to room, activity to activity, that every detail was cared f or, every need met before it was known. One of the best parts of Emmaus is that its very survival rests on the participation and dedication of the laity. It takes many people to be the hands and feet of Jesus and make a weekend happen. There are many, many ways to serve: P A G E 7 Luke 24:13-35 Now that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus.
